It's cloudy and rainy today. Back to typical Vancouver Fall forecast.

This shot from last week when Brett and I hiked around the Grouse Mountain area after hiking the Grouse Grind.

Brett hangs off the side of this granite wall near the top of Grouse Mountain during our quick trip to Dam Mountain a few weeks ago. The fog rolled in and the sun gave a nice faded backlight to this scene. More in comments.

A week ago Brett and I spent a few hours wandering around Grouse Mountain. The original plan was to head up Crown but the time crunch and looming work put an end to that goal. Instead we went up the Grouse rind and quickly "summited" Dam Mountain, a low treed summit with pocket views of the surrounding area. On our return to the Sky Ride Brett found some nice Granite and did a little bouldering.

Hope you all had a great weekend. Enjoy your Monday! I have an exam to study for!

And, by the way, hiking is for losers.

The grouse grind is a 2.9k hike up 2830 steps!

It's a killer but also pretty amazing worth the view from the top 3700ft up. 💪

Docked Canada Place Vancouver BC.

Once acquiring our day passes, we hopped the Sky Train to Waterfront Station where we boarded the Sea Bus to North Vancouver.

After disembarking at Lonsdale Quay, we got on the Translink bus #236 to Grouse Mountain.

From the bus at Grouse Mountain parking lot, we walked the steps up to the Skyride ticket booth and purchased two Ultimate Experience tickets for $113.30 CND.

We had a great experience and found all staff members friendly and efficient in performing their duties and responsibilities.

The Grouse Mountain Experience is just another reason Vancouver is one of the world's most exciting places to visit.

Translink certainly makes it easy to get around at a reasonable cost.

This day was Chelsea's (my wife) birthday. We dropped the Things off at Nana and Papa's in the a.m. and drove up to Grouse Mountain to do the Grind (see alternate shot).

2.9km, 2800 feet of elevation gain up the side of Grouse Mountain.

Afterwards we went downtown Vancouver to have lunch and try out a pizza place we had heard about called Nicli Antica Pizzeria. Oh man…

My dad's family is from near Napoli (where pizza was born) and the best pizza I have ever eaten has been when I've visited them in Italy (my aunts make a killer pizza). I have to say, the pizza at this place on Cordova Street is hands down THE BEST pizza I have had since the last time I was in Italy. They cook it the authentic way, in a wood burning oven at 900°F for 90 seconds.

This is the "Diavola": tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, parmesan, basil, thin sliced hot sopressatta salami, with a chili olive oil drizzle. I added mushrooms on the waitress' suggestion. So, so, so good. I think I downed it in 3 minutes flat…

We are totally going back here...

(I'm a day behind, it's been a busy weekend...)

The Ground Grind view downwards past the 3/4 point up the mountain. This vertical high cardio hike is commonly known as "Nature's Stair Climber" because the vertical climb is about 2,800 feet but a 2.9 kilometre (1.8 miles) trail.

Tourists expect to go up in running shoes, no flip flops, and it takes anywhere from about 2 hours to the ultrafit running hikers 40 minutes. Average is about 1 1/2 hours. This is really a cardio exercise, going up you can barely see through the trees. The view from the top is spectacular though of Vancouver and Vancouver Island at night.

The Grouse Grind is a well known Vancouver hiking trail that takes you to the top of Grouse Mountain. It is a 2.9 Km (1.8 mile) ascent, with an elevation gain of 853 metres (2,800 feet). It takes a person is good shape to do it in about one hour. My general rule is that you take your your 10 Km run time; that will be your estimated time for this hike.

I have found the trail very busy and crowded over the years, so I began riding my mountain bike up the back side of the mountain instead. This is another excellent way to work on your fitness. This route is approximately 13.5-Km (8.4 mile) one way, with an elevation gain of 815 meters (2674 feet). It takes about 2 hours to climb and there are dozens of ways down; all much more fun than a gondola ride with a bunch of smelly hikers.

Bike trails vary from easy to double black diamond, depending on your taste. A fast and easy decent is back down the fire road in which you climbed, that takes less than 30 minutes. For the adrenaline junkies sporting knee pads to body armor a much more difficult decent makes the ride so much sweater; also a bit more dangerous. When I am not taking pictures, I am riding my mountain bike; sometimes I combine the two.

Note: Do not take 20 pounds of gear and DSLR if you want to hit the Double Black Diamond runs on the way down.

The views of landmarks such as the Lion's Gate Bridge, Downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park and UBC are spectacular.

Notice Christa is doing the Grind wearing just socks. That's right,

2800 feet vertical on a rough trail in her socks. Hardcore, or what?

Such a pretty view going up the trail, I almost forgot that I was huffing and puffing… until about 200 metres in when the trail got steep, so the camera went back in the bag (for the most part).

Wednesday, May 25, 2016 we travelled to Vancouver, BC from Victoria BC via BC Ferries' Swartz Bay/Tsawwassen route.

We parked the limo in Swartz Bay's Long Term parking overnight for a paltry $12 CND.

The duration of our visit was for one day only but the 24-hour parking fit our needs.

We caught the 9:00a.m, ferry to Vancouver and returned on the 7:00p.m.

After boarding the Translink #620 bus to Bridgeport Station from Tsawwassen, we bought our Compass Day passes for $7.50 each.

Bridgeport Station has five (5) Compass Card dispensers ourside the tall gates and more inside.

There was over 30 people lined up at the only two Compass Card dispatch, vending machines at Tsawwassen Terminal.

No day passes can be purchased onboard BC Ferries vessels nor at Swatz Bay terminal.

Once acquiring our day passes, we hopped the Sky Train to Waterfront Station where we boarded the Sea Bus to North Vancouver.

Michael Simpson has won the race before, but couldn't catch Sebastian Salas, who beat the former record holder (2007) by almost 2 mintues.

Earlier this week, Outside Magazine named this one of the ten most dangerous trails in the world. I think that's overstating the gruelling 2.9 km scramble up Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver.

This is a quick photo of friend's daughter as we slogged our way up the trail earlier today.

And for the photo nerds, of which I am one, this was taken with the ISO up at 6400. Noise reduction made it a useable shot.

One week after Sebastian Albrecht set the single day record of 13 times up the Grouse Grind on Grouse Mountain, I matched my own single day record of 1 time up the near vertical 2.9 km workout using steps made from rough logs, roots, stones and railway ties.

Between the 1/2 way mark and the 3/4 way mark on the Grouse Grind, there's an overgrown trail off to the right where you can get a spectacular view (would be better on a clearer day) of the city from a rock face. There are no views from the Grind itself, so these side trips will wreck your time if you're a true Grinder -- which I'm not!

Sebastian Salas set a new Grouse Grind Mountain Run official record of 25:01 to go with his unofficial recreational record of 23:48 (set in August).

From above the trail on the 'Grouse Grind" I did a little trick work with the camera and fisheye lens and flash.

Grouse Mountain

So you wanna hike the Grouse Grind eh? In the background there is a "newbie" who has broken his ankle just minutes into his workout. Hike The Stawamus Chief instead. Views are nicer and the path is wider too.

Last big race of the summer of 2010.

Michael Simpson won this race several years in a row but is now a perennial 2nd place to Sebastian Salas.
