In 1948 a fellow student and photographer for Columbia University's student paper showed Garry Winogrand the darkroom, which was open twenty-four hours in the basement of the architecture building. Two weeks later, Winogrand abandoned painting for photography and "never looked back." Described as "an undisciplined mixture of energy, ego, curiosity, ignorance, and street-smart naiveté," the Bronx native photographed incessantly, mostly on the streets, working as a freelance photographer for a picture agency and eventually publishing journalistic images in numerous magazines throughout the fifties.

Around 1960, after being shown a copy of Walker Evans's book American Photographs, Winogrand began to take a more artistic approach in his work. The first half of the decade, however, was a difficult time, including political disillusionment and the breakup of his first marriage. He persevered in his career and eventually published four books of photographs, including The Animals in 1969, images made in zoos, and Women Are Beautiful in 1975, candid shots of anonymous women on the street. Winogrand used a small-format, 35mm camera that enabled him to photograph quickly and freely, which he did to the extreme: at the time of his death in 1984, he left more than 2,500 undeveloped rolls of film.

Michael Ayrton was an English artist and writer, known as a painter, printmaker and sculptor, and also as a critic, broadcaster and novelist. His work is in several important collections including the Tate Gallery, London, National Portrait Gallery, London, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Fry Art Gallery, Essex.

Between 1946 and 1952 Ayrton made several visits to Italy, where he became interested in the Renaissance principles of perspective. 'The Captive Seven' is one of Ayrton's major works. The figures were inspired by the street life of a poor district of Rome, and are arranged in a geometrically structured composition. Ayrton executed the work as a dark allegory of the seven deadly sins. Alternatively the seven figures could be seen as being held captive by their poverty. In the paintings of this period Ayrton sought to 'offset unquiet implications by a completely tranquil design'.

Joseph Stella was an Italian-born, American Futurist painter best known for his depictions of industrial America. He is associated with the American Precisionism movement of the 1910s-1940s. He was born in Italy but came to New York City in 1896. He studied at the Art Students League of New York under William Merritt Chase. His first paintings are Rembrandtesque depictions of city slum life. In 1908, he was commissioned for a series on industrial Pittsburgh later published in The Pittsburgh Survey.

It was his return to Europe in 1909, and his first contact with modernism, that would truly mold his distinctive personal style. Returning to New York in 1913, he painted Battle of Lights, Mardi Gras, Coney Island, which is one of the earliest American Futurist works. He is famous for New York Interpreted, a five-paneled work patterned after a religious altarpiece, but depicting bridges and skyscrapers instead of saints. This piece reflects the belief, common at the time, that industry was displacing religion as the center of modern life.

A famous Stella quote is: "I have seen the future and it is good. We will wipe away the religions of old and start anew."

This is a Photoshop reworking of a group portrait I posted last week, to celebrate the launch of the new CD ( called 'Hold in the Sun') by Crooked Mouth, which is my friend, Ken Campbell's group.

One of the songs on the CD is called 'Two Worlds' and I thought this version fits well with that title.

The accompanying CD booklet, features some of my photographs of Italian gymnastic group Kataklo. You can also hear some of their music at the Crooked Mouth myspace website. 10% of the cover price of each CD goes to support the work of Sight Savers International.

The line-up (from left to right) is: Tony, Ali, Ken, Lynne, Mike, Leen and Eilidh

Around 1425-1428 Campin painted the Mérode Altarpiece, triptych (three paneled paintings) commissioned for private use. The Annunciation occupies the central panel. The Archangel Gabriel is shown approaching Mary, who sits reading. She is depicted in a well-kept middle-class Flemish home.

Oil on canvas; 40.8 x 45.6 cm.

English painter. He was apprenticed to the advertising firm of Sir Joseph Causton Ltd with the intention of becoming a poster designer (1909), but he attended evening classes at St Martin’s School of Art in London, and won a London County Council scholarship in drawing to the Slade School of Art in 1910. Roberts never lost the impeccable clarity of design that his early poster-designing experience instilled in him. He thrived at the Slade winning a Slade scholarship (1912). Like his close friend David Bomberg, he was fascinated by the achievements of Post-Impressionism and Cubism, an interest fortified in 1913 when he left the Slade and traveled in France and Italy. Such paintings from this period as The Return of Ulysses show his determination to simplify his figures and to adopt an aerial viewpoint that reduced the entire picture to a flat, angular pattern.

He was closely associated with the Vorticist movement though he worked with Roger Fry at the Omega Workshops after Wyndham Lewis had left to set up the Rebel Art Centre; Roberts was called up in April 1916 and spent two years as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery before working as a War Artist for the Canadians from the summer of 1918. A signatory to the initial Vorticist Manifesto, after the War he met T.E. Lawrence and produced illustrations for Seven Pillars of Wisdom, reflecting still the Vorticism that later in his career gave way to an idiosyncratic figurative style.

Duccio di Buoninsegna was one of the most influential Italian artists of his time. Born in Siena, Tuscany, he worked mostly with pigment and egg tempera and like most of his contemporaries he painted religious subject matters. He has influenced Simone Martini and the brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti, among others.

Duccio was the first great Sienese painter, and he stands in relation to the Sienese School as Giotto does to the Florentine; yet without the powerful naturalism that makes the art of Giotto so revolutionary. Rather, Duccio sums up the grave and austere beauty of centuries of Byzantine tradition and infuses it with a breath of the new humanity which was being spread by the new Orders of SS. Francis and Dominic.

Tage Åsén (born 1943) is a Swedish graphic artist and painter.

He works in a technique which has been described by art critics as super-realistic or hyper-realistic. The motif in his paintings is a critical "social surrealism" that is predicated on a dark and wry humour. His paintings have been used as covers for a number of books and music albums since his first exhibition (1968).

Most notable among these is perhaps the covers for the Swedish rock group Samla Mammas Manna, ranging from "Måltid" (1972) to "Dear Mamma" (2002).

He also made the book cover paintings of "De heliga geograferna" (1973) and "Guddöttrarna" (1975), the first two books about Sunne by the Swedish writer Göran Tunström

Sandro Botticelli or Il Botticello ("The Little Barrel") was an Italian painter of the Florentine school during the Early Renaissance. Less than a hundred years later, this movement, under the patronage of Lorenzo de' Medici, was characterized by Giorgio Vasari as a "golden age". His posthumous reputation suffered until the late 19th century; since then his work has been seen to represent the linear grace of Early Renaissance painting, and The Birth of Venus and Primavera rank now among the most familiar masterpieces of Florentine art.

Earlier this week, I did a studio photography session to celebrate the launch of the new CD (which is called 'Hold in the Sun') by Crooked Mouth, which is my friend, Ken Campbell's group. We had a lot of fun during this session, but this was one of the more "serious" moments. I believe this shot is going to be used in the press pack that will be sent out.

Oh, and the cool thing about this (from my point of view) is that the accompanying CD booklet, features some of my photographs of Italian gymnastic group Kataklo. Woo-Hoo! There is part of a series from a whole album of photos that belonged to my Grandfather called "Stone's Cottage." What was Stone's Cottage? I don't know. The pictures are charming snapshots of life for young professionals in the early 1900s.

Most of the ladies were new schoolteachers. Most of the men were bankers and lawyers. My grandfather posed, lit , shot and developed the photographs, so he is rarely portrayed here.

It is his eye through which we see.
