I'm not usually a big fan of reservoirs. I know they're a necessity for providing water to many, but they often scar the landscape and look very unnatural.
However, Simpson Ground Reservoir is one exception I've found.
Although there is a long dam at one end, the rest of the water blends in with the surroundings perfectly. It is a fascinating place, with plenty of knolls and viewpoints to explore. I visited this reservoir for the first time over 10 years ago, and have kept meaning to return over the years.
However, it was only the other day when I discovered a few images of it on a hard drive that it reminded me, so today I ventured there.
The day was murky to begin with, but I think it suited the setting perfectly. I'm particularly fond of this skeletal tree emerging from the water. It's definitely a place I'll return to again as there are many other photographic possibilities in different weather conditions.
The lowest place possible is a picture of humbleness. Many possibilities soon await when I except the sercumestances now.
It appears that these two squirrels are having a conversation as they stand just outside of their den. The Arctic Ground Squirrels took over a former fox den to raise their young. The Arctic Ground Squirrel are one of the few mammals that truly hibernate during winter. Their heart slows to one beat per minute and their blood actually drops to below freezing. During the fall, they will store flowers and seeds in their dens for food when they wake up in the spring and the tundra is still frozen with snow.
The Hornbill is of two species o Ground Hornbill and is the largest species of Hornbills. The other species of the genus Bucorvus is the Abyssinan Ground Hornbill, B Abyssincus. They are very different looking birds, I saw this one at the Zoo Atlanta.

In Africa Southern Ground-hornbills are classified as ‘vulnerable’ by the IUCN, however, in South Africa they are classified as ‘endangered’ and on the Red List of Threatened Species as only about 1500 individuals still live within the country. Loss of habitat, loss of nesting trees, electrocution from transformer boxes and even, in some cases, killed for use in traditional medicine, have all contributed to the rapid decline of these majestic birds.
The idea was to get as low to the ground and possibly line up some grooves in the cement, but alas I wasn’t happy with the result. I switched to monochrome and pushed the structure in the nik collection to show off the strong design work. No ants were hurt in the making of this photograph.

“You’re insane,” I told him, and stood up to dress.
He hugged me from behind, pressing hard against me, rubbing his smooth chest along my back. He spoke into my ear, “Insane for you, my love.”

For those who know Hodge Close Quarry you may recognise this view. It is just half a mile from the car park which was the starting point of a recent hike Mark and I had taken up Wetherlam.

Ground fog is a common summer fog that forms at ground level. The fog hangs low, very low, close to the ground. Over meadows, ditches and sometimes also onto the road. Cow's foot mist. The ground fog is often dissolved very quickly by the power of the summer sun that rises in the morning. It is and remains dangerous to drive, but especially during sunrise and sunset, it is so spectacular to see. There are different names for it: cow's feet fog, ditch and canal fog, radiation fog and fog banks.
The Oudeland van Strijen nature reserve, 500 hectares in size, is a popular area for many winter visitors such as the pygmy goose and meadow birds such as the godwit and lapwing. The land consolidation and desiccation due to drainage had a negative effect on surrounding plots and on the Oudeland van Strijen. At the moment, the low water level in the ditches in winter and spring in particular imposes restrictions on the successful raising of meadow birds.
Hot pools and steaming ground are found near the erupting spring in the Gunnuhver Group at the Gunnuhver Thermal Area on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland. The development of a Geothermal power plant in 2006 effected the hydrothermal features. Steaming of the ground at Reykjanes increased markedly as a consequence of pressure drawdown in the geothermal reservoir after exploitation. Some boreholes drilled during development became steam vents or mud pools.
