Behind the Washington County Career Center just outside of Marietta Ohio is a nature trail that leads down into a stream valley. At the bottom of the trail is another path that leads to this grindstone quarry. This place was amazing. These stones were quarried probably over a hundred years ago but never hauled out to market. In the early 1800’s grindstones were quarried out of sites like this one and hauled down to the Ohio river by oxen and sent down river on flat boats. Later the stones were transported by rail. Ohio and more specifically Washington county Ohio supplied 90 % of all the grind stones produced in the U.S. Looking at these stones I noticed they were much thicker than normal grindstones. I think that they were cut out of the ground in vertical columns and then sliced like a loaf of bread.
