Here is a setup I use for grinding and polishing. It is not completely up to Japanese traditions, where you supposed to have a water bucket standing behind the tilted wooden block with a stone held by your own weight with a special wooden hook. However, it works for me because I don't really have a shop or something and I do it right on the floor next to the back door window.

Snapware container works perfectly for keeping water - I always can put a lid on it, close latches, and put it aside.

Since I don't want to spend several hundred on stones, the main groundwork is done using wet abrasive paper attached to a piece of metal bar with very thin double-sided sticky tape (3M Scotch carpet mounting tape). Usually, it takes about two or four changes of paper to complete a stage. For rough grinding stages (called Shitaji togi), I highly recommend 3M SandBlaster flexible plastic film, 150 and 320 grit size. It definitely lasts longer than regular paper and grain size is more uniform than conventional medium-grit sandpaper usually has.

By using abrasive sheets, I can save money to buy fine and polishing stones. 5000-grit Naniwa Ebi synthetic stone is on its way to me from Osaka and I have a plan to buy a nice relatively large piece of natural Shiage-do polishing stone from Namikawa Heibei Co. (Maybe, for 12000¥ it will not be a perfect one, but definitely something good enough.)
