This grasshopper was floating around on a ball in the pool all morning. Maybe it thought that the refection in the pool was another grasshopper.

The grasshopper is an insect of the suborder Caelifera in the order Orthoptera. To distinguish it from bush crickets or katydids, it is sometimes referred to as the short-horned grasshopper.
Big and beautiful is the only way to describe these fantastic grasshoppers. This guy was about 3 inches in length. They move in slow motion, cannot hop very far and cannot fly. They don't sting or bite but are toxic to would be predators although shrikes have been seen to dine on them. Taken at Brookgreen Gardens, SC
When threatened, it produces a poisonous froth from openings beneath its wings. This toxin comes from the milkweed plant, which the grasshopper eats, and is strong enough to kill animals and people.

Grasshopper on cow parsley, I love this because it is a green critter usually seen on a green plant. Here he/she poses for me for a few seconds before leaping off into the undergrowth just outside of Hitchin.
Grasshoppers are species which change colour and behaviour at high population densities are called Grasshoppers the typical insect body of head, thorax and abdomen. The head is held vertically, at an angle to the body with the mouth at the bottom. It bears a large pair of compound eyes which give all-round vision, three simple eyes which can detect light and dark and a pair of antennae which are sensitive to touch and smell. The downward-directed mouthparts are modified for chewing and there are two sensory palps in front of the jaws.
