Graphite is a black mineral which is used in the core of the pencils. Graphite is made exclusively layers of carbon atoms disposed in an hexagonal lattice forming a honeycomb in each layer. Curiously, if we packed a lot of pencils we can simulate this packing.

The picture shows the packing of those pencils with an atomistic model of a graphitic layer superimposed in order to show the similarity between the macroscopic world and the nanoscale.

The lead sheet's stains and folds suggested the drawing to be done. Graphite shines on lead surface, it's difficult to visualize it.
