I seldom get the luxury to embark upon a fact finding mission in doing a camera design, but I had a special chance to visit a landmark of Old New York, the Bemelmans Bar in the Carlyle Hotel. This is a hallowed place as Bemelmans was here working on the tour de force children's murals. His loose painterly style looks fantastic under the 14k gold ceiling and candlelit tables of this intimate bar.

This proposed design also pays homage to two other things about Bemelmans' life:

His lifelong passion for painting (he toured cities in a car that was his mobile studio) and dining at the famed German restaurant Luchow's in Manhattan (which he visited for over forty years).

This design's illustration & graphic elements are a but a pastiche of Bemelmans' Madeline series and are drawn only to illustrate the camera design. They are derived from his grandson's wonderful new book about his life which is richly illustrated and detailed. The only elements which are my original creation are of the camera modification and it's design innovations, not Bemelmans' graphics or any design of the Madeline series which are solely his.

I decided to modify a French Goldstein Touring box camera. The stylish hardware and adventurous themes of this firms' box cameras fit Bemelmans' love of travel in his real-life touring studio. I love the nicknames for the individual Goldstein cameras (Goldy, Rally, Caves St. Marguerite, Camping, Spring, Riviera, Week-End, Sporting, etc).

The camera's viewfinder has not only a perspective but a 3-D element extending out of and into the viewfinder; space that is both inside and outside. This is subtly dovetailed with the roof of the camera that is noticeably pitched downwards leading the outside viewer also straight into the camera's body along with the Bemelmans' 7 French schoolgirls down a secret basement side entrance into 2 exclusively private party rooms in an imaginary Luchow's. These perspective views are further enhanced by the long canopy and twin lines of schoolgirls both scaled to look larger than life. Please see note below.

Two side cabinets pull out to recreate some of the luxe look of the Bemelmans Bar in Manhattan, serving a mini bar bottle of Moët. Battery electrification for the luxe lighting is concealed in the ample storage areas. Small plastic vials of rose scent are left inside to waft through the camera's interiors. This is noticeable whenever any of the two panels are opened.

The party rooms are on two levels at the camera's back end, seen through two interior viewing eyepieces. An extra set Madeline's friends are provided for the user to place inside. Each room has a large table, a narrow staircase with a vaulted expanse reminiscent of some of Bemelmans spaces in his children's books. And each room is lit by natural light from the brownie-styled glass portholes, giving the camera a playful look of being two cameras, one in front and the other in the back; this twin theme is repeated throughout the design. When the camera bar is open, the portholes can be manually closed and light then filters in from the translucent front giving the rooms an golden amber upscale "Carlyle" look.

The viewfinder housing is done in the style of Bemelmans, a copy of a countryside sheep house on a mural at the Carlyle bar under which I sat.

The kind bartender had made me a non-alcoholic Le Fleur de Paradis (I can't drink alcohol). With the complimentary bar snack tray, the cost was cheaper than a top-of-the-line Starbucks coffee (which I despise). I'm in my spiritual world here; I could easily hold court.

This camera design, like all my designs with a twin theme, is dedicated to Cameron and Audrey, who turn 6 months next week!

Gocco fever!

This time I'm cross-breeding medium, as the powerpole image is gocco'd onto extra-wide vintage grosgrain ribbon, then the wires and the birds are embroidered on. (I'm thinking these will be interesting patches - I'm making 8 total).

Beautiful pre Photoshop graphics. Read these at school 50 years ago. Absolutely packed with information and fantastic hand drawn graphics. Works of art in themselves. I picked up all 12 volumes of 12 magazines for £10.00 on eBay year or so ago. All in mint condition.

Thanks for your comments, but please no awards, banners nor graphics they will be deleted

I was tempted to get a fancy, trendy 'Moleskine', but eventually decided against it. Old, proven 'mixed media' notebook from 'Canson' would do better, I guess.
