The red squirrel has been a native in the UK for several thousand years, whereas the first greys were brought here from North America in 1876. Over the years more were introduced, notably by the Duke of Bedford to the park at Woburn Abbey where they thrived.
Undoubtedly, the grey squirrel has adapted well to our countryside and towns; some would say at the expense of the red squirrel, which is only partly true. Certainly direct conflict between the two species seems to be unheard of.
It is not so much a case of the grey squirrel driving out the red, but more a case of being better equipped and more adaptable. A major factor is the ability to survive tough winters due to the fact that greys generally carry more body fat. Although the size difference between the two types of squirrel is not dramatic, a full-grown grey can weigh almost twice as much as a red. Grey squirrels are also more adventurous and happier foraging on the ground, whereas red squirrels spend most of their lives high up in conifer trees, and their diet is less varied, although both species are generally vegetarian.
Grey squirrels are still often regarded as vermin, compared to their popular cousins though. In the 1920s and 1930s, grey squirrels were beginning to cause significant damage to commercial forestry; in particular to beech trees. A law was passed in 1938 banning further importation of these creatures, and in following years various methods were tried without success to control grey squirrels. Many people still call them ‘tree rats’, but they are here to stay and give much pleasure, especially in urban parks and gardens where they become
Huge colonies of the red squirrel population were wiped out between 1900-1920 by the parapox virus, which is similar to myxomatosis in rabbits. Not only that, but red squirrels were hunted right up until 1927. In fact there was even a Highland Squirrel Club dedicated to this ‘sport’! Hunting, disease and changes in the management of forestry all contributed to the population being drastically reduced, from which it has never recovered. Man should accept the blame for his part in their demise.
Grey squirrels are playful, curious and agile animals, and living proof that man can’t always assert his will on nature with poison and guns. Farmers and foresters have learned to live with the grey squirrels and are beginning to manage forests to encourage red squirrels, particularly in the north-west of England.

I have to admit right up front: Growing up in The City (San Francisco) during the 50's/60's was an adventure...things were happening...things were poppin...it was fun...the things we took for granted, e.g., grand theaters, awesome neon signs and fantastic architecture, have all but melted away...
I will also admit that this isn't my picture, but one taken from the collection of Henri Leleu depicting The Old Crow Bar at 962 Market St., which of course has been torn down and replaced with another cookie cutter, tin & glass blob...
No doubt, what grabbed my attention most in this shot were the three neon Lucky Lager signs and the cocktail glass on the front door, not to mention the fantastic "The Old Crow" neon above the door...
If this looks familiar to some, it is because it's a recrop of a photo already in my photostream. This variation was suggested in feedback from a Flickr friend Matt (a.k.a. Facing The World) who suggested I try cropping some off the top and the left side.
Cropping is an art form in and of itself and one is always learning. Non-photographers often criticize portraits that have part of the hat or the top of the head cropped, even though doing so can frequently result in a more intimate connection to the all-important eyes.
With the original crop of this photo I was lazy and left too much foliage to the left which did not contribute much so getting rid of it makes sense (thanks Matt).
In my original version of the photo, frankly, I got hung up on including all of her hair, thinking it was essential to the portrait.
Flickr is a place for displaying but also for learning. One must remain open to feedback from friends so here is the suggested version. I have included the original (below) to make the comparison easier.
As is so often the case, tastes vary and there is not always a right or wrong. I leave it to you to decide which you like best and either way I think you will agree that she's a beauty.

All started in 2016 when I built my first Micro Scale Game of Thrones castles. I liked the look, but I wasn’t pleased with the movement. So for the final season I wanted to finally do it right and rebuilt all castles from scratch: This time from the beginning on with the concept to move them.

Mechanical aspect was completely new to me, but I really enjoyed this challenge. In total I guess I spent three months at this project.
For my next exhibitions I will have all six castles in my bag, so you can turn them live!

Finally got out yesterday am, and as I walked along the water, 1000's and 1000's of mostly tree swallows were in flight and sitting. Did see a few purple martins mixed in, this tree across the river was amazing, this is like 1/6 of the tree, there were 2 trees like this . Was a sight to see
I wasn't too hopeful about this sunrise when we first got to this location (to be honest, I almost stayed in bed). But after a long wait, we got this wonderful light about 45 minutes after sunrise.
I've got a whole folder full of processed images that have never made it onto my Flickr stream. Some of them are near-duplicates of compositions that I've already posted... but some others just didn't make the grade... meaning I didn't like them enough at the time to post them. This is one of those.
The funny thing about the images in this reject folder... is that sometimes they kind of grow on me over time. I take a peek into this folder every month or two (usually when I have nothing else to process or post)... just to see if something might grab my eye. Sometimes I discover a potential crop or some or other photoshop tweak that improves the composition or fixes the thing that's bugging me... but sometimes I just start to like the image more and more. This is one of those.
This seven (portrait) image panorama was taken shortly before sunset... in the middle of a lavender field... on a farm near Franschhoek... in October last year.

I got this on Tuesday. It's a Baskerville ampersand in italic, designed in the 18th century by John Baskerville (you see what he did with the name, right?) it's been a favourite of mine ever since my ampersand obsession got started. In fact this very ampersand is probably what ignited my love for them.

My sister thought it was clever to take a picture of me at Batsford! She threatened all kinds of things if I didn't upload it to Flickr - so here it is!! I look about ready to go climbing the Welsh mountains - which is exactly where we are planning to go next week! ( not actually climbing though....Its hard enough to get Peter walking....)
I got Lego Dimensions and the portal pack and it is an amazing game! Batman in Springfield, Chel in the old west, Awesome!
After I played that for a while I got back into portal, and passed the first one in a few hours, so decided to make this little guy because the one that comes with the Portal pack is way too big.

In Florida, people very often mistake the double-crested
cormorant for the anhinga, as they are both swimming birds.
A good way to differentiate; the anhinga has a 'straight-bill'
and the double-crested cormorant has a 'hooked-bill'.

Kinda ran out of full groups I could do, so I've resorted to random groups of random minifigs. So in this one we have:
Wolverine - Came across this combo while doing another thing, it's actually why I decided to start doing this kinda fig barf.
Hera Syndulla - I've had this one knocking about for a while, just never got to rendering it.
Rick Grimes - Again, had him around for a while, but I managed to get him in his iconic pose for this pic.
Suicide Squad Harley Quinn - Not much to say about her, just a combo of Harley Quinn parts.
The 11th Doctor (Time of the Doctor) - Though this one has been done in a set, I thought I'd take a whirl at a more accurate version.
Green Lantern (Abin Sur) - Mecabricks finally got around to adding more of the DC CMF pieces, this one works quite well for Abin Sur. I imagine this look is from when he was in his prime.

Top picture is a screen shot of Keira Knightley playing Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice on Stanage Edge!! My Canadian friend Aislinn has always wanted to stand in the exact same spot. So yesterday I took her and Josh to jump about on Stanage (previous pics!) and then showed her where she needed to stand and Josh where to take some pictures from!!
She was so happy it was hard for her to stand still! (as they leave the UK on Monday!!)

Sudden front of tempestuous clouds and wind get me so damn excited! I nearly ran off the road with my truck to start snapping pics before the sideways sheets of rain devoured everything!
