On Saturday 11th July, Plantsbrook School opened its doors to the public for an event celebrating the school building's rich past and its exciting future, where the school building will be demolished with an all-new school being gradually built in its place. Being a former pupil as well as a photographer/journalist sent to cover the event, I set about diligently capturing as much of the school on camera as possible. It's astounding to think that by 2017, everything in these photographs will be gone...

After nearly two years off the road, Southern Transit MCW Metrobus D934 NDA left the yard yesterday morning for a new home in preservation. This one was always good to drive, being one of the batch used from new on Timesaver services.
Valor Middle School staff and administrators gathered at their campus to present student’s with 8th grade promotion certificates and to say goodbye for the summer, Thursday, June 11, 2020.

No sign of her for months. Today, she showed up. Inwardly, the same sweetheart who has graced my windowsill and my life for years. Old age has taken its toll and I think she knows it, which is why she paid me a visit. She showed no fear of me at all, and she allowed me to stroke the entire length of her back end to end. I gave her food, but she had problems eating it.
Her parting gesture was for her to look at me in that way she always did - straight at me, those eyes have seen more than we'll ever be privvy to, now sore and old, vision fading fast. i gently nuzzled her chin with my finger and she turned around and left. She paused briefly to look back on the human who had fallen in love with her and then, like mist, she was gone.
Thank you Half-Tail for being in my life, for sharing your time, for not being afraid but still retaining that 'fully wild' approach to other animals and for introducing me to your world.
There will be other squirrels in my life for sure, but none will ever affect me in the same way you have. I know that you chose today to come and say goodbye - and it hurts. I know that your legacy will be that your offspring and their offspring will feel safe in the garden as long as I am here to do that, and to protect your homes in the woodland beyond the garden.

Grandpa passed away last night. I went out today to shoot and think or really, to just shoot and feel. This shot conveys purity, death and an imminent rebirth. I am glad he is with my Grandma but I'm sad that we lost the family's patriarch.
Goodbye Grandpa.
I felt bad that the Red Maple had to go. It was sick and dying, so we felt that it was best to cut it down and we will use the wood. Here's a collage I made of what happened today.

Yesterday I gathered with some friends to say goodbye to our friend Bob. Bob was a contradance friend and a really gifted photographer. He killed himself in August after a long struggle with depression. Even until the end, he concealed his mental illness well. Many of those who knew him and loved him, including myself, had no idea how much he was suffering.
So the contradance community gathered to remember him. A member of the dance community led the service. Individuals shared their memories of Bob. I read an odd, prickly, beautiful poem by Naomi Shihab Nye and told a couple of my favorite Bob stories. One woman shared her memory of Bob dancing alone at contradances and freestyle dances, and many nodded in recognition. This is a man who was courageous enough to dance alone in public. That takes chutzpah.
Some wrote a word or two capturing their sense of Bob and then burned the papers in a clay pot. The ashes will be a gift for his widow to scatter or to keep.
After the remembrance, there was a contradance. It was hard for me to dance -- I had spent the whole afternoon teetering between keeping it together and falling apart. But we were all in the same boat. The dancing was gentle. Easy steps set to sweet, light melodies. At the conclusion of the event, we gathered in a large circle while the musicians started playing a waltz. Everyone waltzed gently with their partners to the rhythm, then gradually we separated to dance alone -- a tribute to Bob's independent spirit. At the end of the waltz we took hands again and danced in circles around his widow, eventually closing in around her to form a hive of sympathy and support. It was an unbelievably tender moment, and it seemed a perfect ending for a man who brought so much beauty and richness into the world.
It is always a sad day when Walt Disney World is forced to say goodbye to one of its classic attractions. Today, October 5th, was the last day of operations for Maelstrom, Epcot's dark boat ride through the spirit of Norway. In keeping with the theme of education and information that the World Showcase and the rest of Epcot represents, Maelstrom (and the video afterwards) brought people across the world in a 10 minute trip to the beautiful country of Norway.
The ride will reopen sometime in 2016, re-themed as a Frozen ride. One can only hope that it captures the timelessness that other classic Disney attractions have.

We were farting around with the cameras and making small talk, and the next thing I knew, "DING!" I ran and hopped on the train just as the doors closed behind me. No hug. No goodbye. Just me crying on the train and Kim standing lonely and clowning on the platform. An MTA employee on the train saw me crying, removed his headphones, and asked me if she needed to get on the train too. "No. She's flying tonight. Moving away."

We said an unexpected and tearful goodbye to our sweet boy today. It looks like the dreaded cancer has struck again. He died during emergency surgery for internal bleeding. They found a large mass on his kidney which looks like it metastasized to his spleen and liver. They couldn't stop the bleeding and lost him on the table.
