Our cat Buster died last night. He was nearly 18. He accompanied me through pretty much my adult life so far. I've lived with him longer and more consistently than any other living being ..including my parents and my wife. His brother Iggy died two years ago. I thought Buster would follow soon after, but he proved to be the "energizer bunny" of cats ...he just kept going and going. He was fairly un-cat like in most respects. He adored people, and insisted on being held whenever possible. I attribute this to the fact that he was accidentally separated from his mother at two weeks of age, and raised as a "bottle baby". He had many fans among our friends and old roommates, despite the fact that many of them were often awakened by he and his brother's loud early morning meowing. That's how I knew he was gone. I awoke to the sound of birds this morning.
Goodbye Buster. You were truly loved.

We said goodbye to Reese this evening. See the set description for details. Reese was an extraordinarily good dog -- intelligent, obedient, loyal, kind and affectionate. Reese was easily the best dog we've ever had. She was only 4 years old when she passed this evening.

The packing crates arrive to move the University of Sunderland art library to the Murray Library on Chester Road.
The park, and the house, were owned by the Backhouse family and gifted to the town of Sunderland, the house becoming the home of the College of Arts and Crafts from 1934. The house was built for Edward Backhouse the banker and philanthropist, in 1835. It was extended by GG Hoskins of Darlington, and once it had passed to the College further additions were made in different styles and it has been one of the main Art buildings for the Polytechnic/University over the years. I personally recall taking the long trek there from the railway station in the 1970s, portfolio of drawings and paintings uncomfortably not quite fitting underarm, for an interview for the art foundation course. (I did maths and computing at Newcastle instead!)
It will be interesting to see how the house will be used under future ownership and whether the mixed architectural additions are retained.
Things move on, the library staff were telling us that many former students and others have called in to take a last look and say goodbye to the old building.

30 January 2010. New lighting columns await connection on the Ferry Lane Estate.
So it's goodbye to the light-polluting and inefficient yellow globes; and welcome to modern white-light columns which beam downwards - where it's needed.
My former ward colleague Cllr Lorna Reith took the lead on issues concerning Ferry Lane Estate, where she lives. Over the years Lorna and I nagged away about renewing the lighting there.
New lighting columns were installed in two phases. Lorna consulted with the residents' association (FLAG) and agreed which areas had priority. The first to be done were the central footpath and other less well-lit areas where people felt unsafe. Then the river towpath. (The lights there will have special fitments so as not to disturb local bat life.)
In 2010 the rest of Ferry Lane Estate was getting new lighting columns installed. (When I took this photo, some were awaiting cable connection; then disconnection and removal of the old columns.)
Goodbye Porto. We were headed further north to Barcelos. The birthplace of the famous Portuguese rooster who became a national symbol.

Harbin, China's northeast region
Ice Lantarn Festival
Having the most bitterly cold winters among major Chinese cities, Harbin is referred to as the Ice City (Chinese: 冰城) for its well-known winter tourism and recreations. Harbin is notable for its beautiful ice sculptures in winter and its Russian legacy, and it still plays an important part in Sino-Russian trade today. In the 1920s, the city was considered China's fashion capital since new designs from Paris and Moscow reached there first before arriving in Shanghai. On 22 June 2010, Harbin was appointed a UNESCO "City of Music" as part of the Creative Cities Network
Being the famous "Ice City" in northeastern China, Harbin attracts visitors from home and abroad by the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival it helds each year. It is a happy carnival which provides visitors a whole new world of ice and snow. The festival usually begins from January and last for over one month.
ok. I understood. Comments to my last pictures and by mail were pretty clear: forget snow, forget winter, forget the cold, forget the white! ;-) WE WANT SPRING!!
Hence, although difficult to withstand, I will not post any other then these pictures of this weekend's tours in the Swiss alps: A final tribute to the past winter.
And now, let there be spring and summer!!

this is too vertical. i only had time to take a couple pictures right when i got home, since college orientation took up my whole day.
i am exhausted and i still need to finish packing, so i shall go.
