Mide 25 cm. y pesa 230 grs. Es una Amazona pequeña con la frente blanca y conspicua, con rojo en la cara y en las coberteras alares (los machos), pero sin rojo en las secundarias.
Los adultos son principalmente verdes con un escamado negro en la cabeza, el pecho y la parte superior de la espalda. La frente y la parte delantera de la coronilla son de color blanco. La parte central de la coronilla es azul, las lores y el área orbital color rojo, y las remeras azules, en gran parte. En el macho el álula y las coberteras de las primarias son rojas, al igual que la base del vexilo interno de las timoneras. El iris es entre amarillo y blanco y el anillo ocular desnudo es gris. La cera y el pico son amarillos y las patas son parduzcas.
En los ejemplares juveniles el blanco de la frente y la coronilla es más o menos amarillento y menos extenso que el de los adultos (a veces está casi ausente); presentan menos rojo en la cara.

"The brown shrike (Lanius cristatus) is a bird in the shrike family that is found mainly in Asia. It is closely related to the red-backed shrike (L. collurio) and isabelline shrike (L. isabellinus). Like most other shrikes, it has a distinctive black "bandit-mask" through the eye. and is found mainly in open scrub habitats, where it perches on the tops of thorny bushes in search of prey."

I used to stand tall and straight, but now I lean to one side. I used to have color and look full of life, but now life has faded from me. I used to be surrounded by noise and activity, but now I stand here alone. My heart used to be warmed with a glowing fire, but now it is cold... I guess I'm getting older.
