Male Bullfinch has a big feed of Blackthorn berries.

The storks (Ciconiidae, Old High German storh) are the only family of the Ciconiiformes and, with six genera and 20 species, are found on all continents except Antarctica.

These birds are characterised by their long necks, long legs and large, often elongated beaks. All storks are carnivores, but their diet varies depending on the species. The best-known stork in Europe is the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), other well-known representatives of this group include the marabou (Leptoptilos) and the glutton (Mycteria ibis).

Another 5am start for a trek back to the Durham Coastline and a visit to Blackhall Rocks with my good friend Jim. It was nice to get some colour in the sky although the incomming tide and large waves proved challenging. I must be a glutton for punishment with these early starts but once you're out and about not much comes close to the enjoyment of watching and capturing the visual spectacle of a sunrise.

Un jeune glouton! Bon appétit...

A Merry Christmas to everyone on Flickr who have viewed my pictures in 2024 and to those whose pictures I have viewed. Hopefully 2025 will be just as good!

This picture was taken during the snows at the end of November (my last post!). It's a view of Glutton Bridge (the bridge over the River Dove) from Hitter Hill with a little bit of PS magic applied!

This is Glutton Grange in the hamlet of Glutton, a few miles north of Longnor. The previously posted image of Parkhouse Hill was taken looking to my left.

This one watches the reputation of the race over a well filled paunch !!!

Been a recent fan of Mr. Wainwright's stream; I absolutely adore his style and images, and what's more amazing is that he and his partner made most of the high quality products themselves. I keep telling myself to check out their store but only recently found the time to do so, and got meself a face mouth to play with :P

A wolverine, (Gulo gulo), stands in the water of a small pond, covered with duckweed.

I decided that my first trip out in September would be back to Chrome Hill. A location I had visited several times before, but always ended up disappointed. As I entered the Dove Valley the low lying mist was thick, so I thought I was in for a treat. However (as so often is the case), by the time the car was parked, and I had walked the 25minutes or so to my intended viewpoint, most of the mist had retreated.

About 20mins after sunrise a thick fog rolled in from behind us, almost completely obscuring Parkhouse Hill. This photograph was taken just as the fog cleared, revealing a bit of blue sky as it did.

Nice to bump into a couple of photographers on the hill, who worked hard to keep spirits up when it looked like the elements had conspired against us

When all the twelve Apostles try to ring me on the phone

Take a message but I won't return their call

For I have no eyes to see him and I thought I lost my way

And I know I've lost the keys to your door

And I climbed the highest mountain and I looked down on the sea

And I saw a ship a-sail to the shore

I took a passage to the East and I journeyed to the West

I made love from Battambang to Baltimore

I said, oh, am I running in a race

I said, oh, am I getting anyplace

I said, oh, can I make it

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit, yes I am a restless soul

I'm a wandering spirit, there's no place that I can call my own

I was a glutton at the banquet and I spilt the finest wine

Trod the pyramids and ruins of Angkor

I kissed the Mona Lisa and I breakfasted with kings

And I touched the nerves of nature in the raw

I said, oh, am I running in a race

I said, oh, take that smile right off your face

I said, oh, I can't make it

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit, no escape, no parole

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit, there's no place that

I can call my home

I said, oh, am I running in a race

I said, oh, take that smile right off your face

I said, oh, I can't make it

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit, looking for a place to go

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit

I'm a wandering spirit, no escape, no parole

I'm a wandering spirit, I'm a lost and lonely soul

Id just walked to the base of Chrome Hill and contoured around for a view looking towards Parkhouse. The snow slowing me down I opted to walk back via dowel dale.

The annual Alnwick Shrovetide football match, has taken place between the rival parishes of St. Michael and St. Paul since 1762. Apparently it is one of only five ancient football games still played in the country.

This year's event was blessed by sunshine, though it could hardly be described as being warm. (7C feeling like 4C according to Strava).

"Football" is a very loose description since there are no real rules, the sides each have at least 30 or 40 players (male and female), there's no referee or umpire, though there are 2 'officials' by the goals at each end of the pitch to judge if a goal has been scored or the ball has gone beyond the goal for a 'goal-kick'. The pitch is about 400 yards long with the river a boundary on one side, there's a natural slope on the other which sort of acts as the other boundary.

The match is won when one of the teams scores two 'hales' or goals ie gets the ball between the posts which are decorated with greenery and are taller than they are wide. And the 'pitch' on the pastures opposite Alnwick Castle is the grazing ground for sheep and cattle for a good part of the year & can be pretty wet in February (it was waterlogged this year!), which all adds to the fun.

There's not a lot going on in this shot as a 'hale' had just been scored and the ball is in the hands of an official (seen in a red hat just to the left of the red & yellow Northumberland flag), prior to the teams swapping ends before the re-start.

If anyone is still reading, this year's match was won by St. Michael's 2-1 (a pity since we live in the St. Paul's part of the town!).

And if anyone is a real glutton for punishment & wants to read more, go to alnwickhales.co.uk/about/

The unmistakably-shaped hills of Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill seen from Glutton Dale.

Last Saturday we had to drop the children back at University so took the opportunity to call in in the Peak District. A 6 mile walk around Monyash was good (and so was the cake in the cafe there!) and the weather was so good we parked up at Glutton Bridge at 6pm for a walk over Hollins and Chrome Hill.

The post box at Glutton bridge had been taken over by a nesting Robin

A cold frosty start to the day between Glutton Bridge and Crowdicote. The River Dove, the border between Staffordshire and Derbyshire, runs across the middle of the picture.

Taken last Thursday morning. The weather is a bit of a guessing game at the moment and the forecasts are very hit and miss.

Fell on a glutton great spotted woodpecker picking seeds let there on purpose by well intentioned local people ..

Early sun catching the trees around Glutton Bridge. On the road between Longnor and Brierlow Bar, Glutton Bridge is a small collection of houses and not much else.

"Battling beauties!"

Here is my first series of "Hummer wars". Hummingbirds of all varieties are amazingly territorial and will chase each other to no end when they feel threatened or guarding "Their" feeder or flowers. Like many other small birds and mammals, I find the challenge of capturing these speed demons in pairs very rewarding. It certainly rates as one of the most difficult behaviors to photograph, as many of my photographer friends can attest to, but l am a glutton for punishment!

Hey, I’m talking to you… A Wolverine, also known as the Glutton, takes it easy at the Bristol Zoo Project in South Gloucestershire. It is a muscular carnivore and a solitary animal. The Wolverine has a reputation for ferocity and strength out of proportion to its size and, in the wild, preys on Artic Fox.

My first image to get processed and post after my trip to Hokkaido Japan with Rohan Reilly, yes I am a glutton for punishment I think that was number 7 :-) I am always shattered and exhausted after his workshops but love every minute even being mentally abused and teased. There is always a great sense of fun never too serious.

This was taken on an extremely stormy morning and it was a shot that we all felt was not going to be possible as we left our nice warm 4x4 in blizzard conditions after a long drive in less than easy driving conditions (thanks again Rohan).

After descending the long stairway to the shore and plowing through multiple snow drifts we were relieved and surprised at the shelter we found there and were able to spend an hour there despite the icy wind and frequent snow storms (Buran A strong cold north or north easterly wind creating extreme blizzard conditions during winter. The Buran occurs most frequently in Mongolia and Siberia and Buran winds are are strong and full of ice and snow. The skies is often laden with snow which swirls about and reduces the visibility to near zero at times.) Please not the bird was there it appeared as if on Que and sat for us very still then flew off. Perfect

As the sun rises the mist fades. Another day begins for the sheep farmer of Staffordshire

Try as it might it didn't manage to swallow this fish

Being a glutton for punishment I decided to go out again this morning and try my best to get some eagle shots. They were not being cooperative and stayed at a distance. This shot is cropped WAY up.

This is near the lock and dam where the water stays open. That's Rock Island, Illinois in the background. Shooting from the Iowa side. Just something a little different then the usual backdrop.

Between the steam coming off the river and the falling snow, it was hard to get clear shots.

This lady taught me or I should say tried to teach me to ride.

Seven years later & she is still a glutton for punishment. We decided to check out the track Black October. It is a nice ride. I suggest you check it out.
