Camp Fire, Colour ot the flame came from copper based chemicals. You can buy them in small packs called "Mystical Fire".
With a glut of power, new power still being delivered and a slight downturn in the economy - we find brand new from GMDD, London, Ontario new CN GP40-2W and SD40-2W's stored, with most tarped along the north side of the yard in London on June 6, 1976.
My own Original song was the inspiration for this picture:
When the heat of the night takes me whole
Your whisper
Soft
Carves into my soul
The breeze kisses
It teases my skin
And I fall
I fall
Let the fire begin
Your scent
It lingers
It pulls me near
A spark in the dark
The night’s souvenir
We’re burning together
Flames in the sky
Our shadows are dancing
No need to ask why
Goosebumps awaken
Desire takes flight
We’re burning together
In endless delight
Your touch is a map
It rewrites my lines
Electrifies places that bend space and time
Pearls of sweat glow like stars on your chest
And hunger ignites where the fire rests
Infinite hunger
Infinite flame
No words needed
No need for a name
It’s a rhythm
A pulse
A heartbeat’s decree
Burning together
Eternally free
We’re burning together
Flames in the sky
Our shadows are dancing
No need to ask why
Goosebumps awaken
Desire takes flight
We’re burning together
In endless delight
Wenn die Hitze der Nacht mich umarmt
Dein Flüstern streift wie ein sanfter Hauch
Die Brise
Die meine Haut zärtlich küsst
Ich weiß
Ich kann nicht widerstehen
Du weißt genau
Was ich brauch
Dein Duft raubt mir den Verstand
Bis in die Unendlichkeit
Ein Feuer
Das in mir brennt
Hände
Die die Zeit anhalten
Gänsehaut
Die niemals endet
Bis in die Unendlichkeit
Schweißperlen glitzern im schummrigen Licht
Eine Glut
Die alles um uns entfacht
Hunger erwacht
So tief und wild
Deine Berührung macht mich elektrisiert
Du führst mich durch das Sternenmeer
Kein Zurück
Ich will nur mehr
Bis in die Unendlichkeit
Ein Feuer
Das in mir brennt
Hände
Die die Zeit anhalten
Gänsehaut
Die niemals endet
Bis in die Unendlichkeit

"Who'll make his mark?" the captain cried
"To the devil drink a toast
We'll glut the hold with cups of gold
And we'll feed the sea with ghosts
I see your hunger for a fortune
Could be better served beneath my flag
If you've the stomach for a broadside
Come aboard, my pretty boys!
I will take you
and make you
everything you've ever dreamed
"Make fast the guns!
Tonight we sail
when the high tide floods the bay!
Cut free the lines and square the yards
Get the black flag stowed away!
The Turk, the Arab, the Spaniard
Will soon have pennies on their eyes
And any other laden fancy,
we will take her by surprise!
I will take you
and make you
everything you've ever dreamed."

How many have you got?
When I started this caper, a few months after Dave and Lee had started going out and about with their cameras before inviting me to the party, there was Flickr. I joined Flickr as instructed so that we could see each other's images, and began to post, sometimes producing a glut of output from one outing and entering it into hundreds of groups at will. There was something called 500px, but from what I could see, unless you were Joe Cornish you might as well not bother - it looked like a place for the bigger boys and girls in the playground. You know, the ones who knew what focus stacking and bracketing meant and had learned that the funny graph on the back of their camera actually had a purpose.
So, I stayed on Flickr alone as far as the photography community was concerned, gradually building a small following as I began to learn about the mysterious things that my two colleagues kept jabbering on about endlessly. I also posted on Facebook, because none of your non clacking friends are ever going to start setting up accounts on Flickr or 500px are they? Of course, the reaction from my personal friends was rather more rapturous than that of you more discerning types, but then again, I'll bet many of us have been through that experience, haven't we? "What's Flickr?" I'd be asked if I ever mentioned it. "Well it's a bit like Facebook, but for photographers," I'd reply as I tried to explain our community to outsiders.
And then there was Instagram, which I was urged to get involved in by friends who were also photographers. I found many of you were also Instagrammers, but by no means all. Add to that the plethora of excellent photographers I found there who had never bothered with Flickr, and the personal friends who refused to do Facebook, but liked the fact that Instagram was a bit less rowdy, and there was another community that I suddenly felt engaged in. I like the instant accessibility, and it's a place where I'm slightly less discerning about what I post there - almost daily in fact. My Flickr stories need a lot more effort and I do like to try and present an image that passes muster here with you. The trouble was, that on that platform, we were forever competing with an endless wave of garbage. It's no surprise of course to learn that a phone snap of a pretty young lady in front of Kirkjufell or Skogafoss garnered a huge amount more interest than the compositions that you and I agonised over. Of course, that's not why we do this, and of course I'm not bitter. No, scratch that, I'm definitely bitter - why wasn't I endowed with chisel like features to capture a thousand faves by looking enigmatic in front of a camera?
And there you have the issue that many Instagrammers began to complain about. No longer was it a place where serious photographers could display their work - especially those who were trying to earn some money from photography, which thank goodness I'm not. Suddenly the platform was awash with endless videos, and accusations were levelled that it had turned into another TikTok. I didn't know whether it had turned into another TikTok, because I'm too old to know what that is. And then there are the restrictions on format. If you really want a picture to stand out, you need to be thinking 5 by 4 in portrait mode, so you end up having to take shots twice, or you need to see a crop within your frame to make things work. But still, I persevered with Instagram because of the virtual friendships I'd made there. Two platforms were enough, quite frankly.
But then Vero came along, swinging its fists like the new kid on the block who wanted to get some attention quickly. For I while, one or two of you were kind enough to message me relentlessly, telling me how good the new platform was, almost rejoicing the fact there were no adverts and the only thing that appeared in their feed were posts from the people they chose to follow. A number of togs had moved lock stock and barrel from Instagram, citing their irritations at the TikTok thing. I didn't want to lose contact with them, and none of them were active over on Flickr, so it seemed I'd have to join the new platform, but not the exodus. After all, how would my personal friends, many of whom are so supportive (including financially on occasion), see my work? After a good deal of faffing, all of which surrounded the fact that Vero don't trust the manufacturer of my mobile phone and therefore won't let me have the mobile app, I joined the throng - just a few days before heading for Iceland. I quite like Vero - it's full of work by very good photographers, including some of you of course - but I am struggling to maintain a presence on all three platforms. It's like being a circus juggler, especially frustrating at a time when I have an enormous backlog of photos to work on.
And there's the thing - three platforms on the go because of all of these virtual relationships. Goodness knows how people who have extra marital affairs manage. But Flickr remains the number one for me personally at any rate. This is where I will always post and share stories, for as long as I'm able to, and that's mostly because of the interaction and feedback I receive here. So sorry about that - you'll have to put up with me. But if you are on Vero (or Instagram) and we've somehow missed one another, do look me up.
As for this image - well I'd already told the story in my previous post, but I'd come away from the lakeside with three or four shots throughout the sunset period that I really liked. You can always read that one again if this tale sent you to sleep. This one has grown on me rather a lot since I edited it.
Wishing you all a fantastic weekend, whatever you have planned. I'm going to see my new-born granddaughter for the first time. How did I get old enough for my children to have their own offspring? She entered the world on Sunday night - my first grandchild. She's beautiful - but of course I would think that wouldn't I? Needless to say, I'm very excited. I'm taking her a present from Iceland, even though I'm not sure she's ready to say thank you just yet.
Well, we have passed the shortest day, so spring's on the way!!
And any of us who are lucky enough to live near bluebell woods, may love them and love photographing them...but we're also all relieved when they die off so we can photograph something else without feeling guilty.
So before the coming glut of bluebell photographs, here's one I made earlier.
Badby Woods, Northamptonshire.
Photographed this last spring, 2024, the endlessly wet weather making it one of the best years for bluebell displays across the country.
Comb Ridge is a remarkable wrinkle in Earth’s crust (monocline) that extends for 80 miles in southeastern Utah and Arizona, between the Abajo Mountains (snowy peaks in the photo) and Kayenta, just south of Monument Valley. The fold has eroded away on its western edge (left side here) by several washes, including Comb Wash visible on the left side of the photo, leaving a steep escarpment composed of red sandstone in the Kayenta formation (about a 500 foot drop here). The yellowish sandstone on the right side of the photo is Navajo sandstone, and further to the right are the ridges above Butler wash. The gash in the valley below is the Comb Wash road, and the mesa to the left of it is Cedar Mesa.
This area is extremely rich with archeological sites and raw scenic beauty, much of it contained within the Bears Ears National Monument. While some may regret the attention the designation of Bears Ears brought to the area’s scenic and historic resources along with an associated increase in visitation, the monument has continued protection for cultural and biological resources. Unfortunately a nearby 400 acre chunk of Comb Ridge that would have been in the monument was sold to a private company by the state of Utah 4 years ago. The parcel contains the remnants of the Hole in the Rock road blazed by Mormon settlers in the late 1870’s. Further to the west an area formerly within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument has been slated for coal mining. Not only would mining negatively impact the scenic value of the land, it would also adversely affect air quality in areas downwind from it, including Bears Ears. One can only hope that the current glut of fossil fuels will mean this development will no longer be economically viable.

The garden strawberry is a widely grown hybrid species of the genus Fragaria It is cultivated worldwide for its fruit. The fruit is widely appreciated for its characteristic aroma, bright red colour, juicy texture, and sweetness. Our plants have a way to go yet to get the that.
Looking closer I have found several strawberry plants that survived the winter. All have strawberries on them. I don't think we'll have a glut of them but what we do get will be a tasty treat.
Kein Feuer, keine Kohle

REM
When you walk through a storm, Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm, There's a golden sky,
And a sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown...
Walk On! Walk On! With hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...

I don’t usually pay much attention to our nearest beach. Just three miles from home along a narrow winding downhill road past the local pasty emporium (seven out of ten for the flaky steak variety), Porthtowan has always been a bit of a curate’s egg to me. It’s as good as any of them for surfing, although high tide can be a bit of an adventure, and the Blue Bar with its bay windows offering expansive sea views is a popular haunt in these parts, but I’ve never really got my head around how to smuggle a decent photograph home from here. The only pictures I’ve ever taken worth sharing are of surfers in action, using the wonderful 70-200mm lens that’s faster than Usain Bolt in a hurry for the bus. Maybe that’s still the case – you can decide that for yourself. But when there’s Portreath just a couple of miles further down the coast, and then my favourite playground at Godrevy another ten minutes’ drive away from there, it always seems so easy to end up heading west instead. Unless of course I’m going the other way towards Holywell Bay. The common factor among those favoured beaches is that you can look out to sea and there will be an obvious focal point to settle the camera on. It’s the same when I head down towards the infinite pleasures around Land’s End. Perhaps it’s a lack of imagination on my part, but I do like to give you a sporting chance of realising what you’re supposed to be looking at when you take the time to view my images.
But Ali likes to bring Rosie here, her sister’s cocker spaniel who loves to race over the clifftops in her endless search for unwary rabbits. Sometimes I go with them, just to get a breath of air and a small dose of vitamin D from those mood filled winter skies, and New Year’s Day brought a classic “I suppose I’d better move my backside from the sofa” moment. The Great Escape wasn’t on the TV anyway as far as I could tell, and if Steve McQueen couldn’t be bothered to entertain me with his motorcycle antics then it seemed that the world was telling me to go outside and embrace it. I don’t always take the camera with me on these outings, but then again, I usually regret it as soon as I take one look at the sea. A couple of weeks earlier we’d arrived here on a sunny Thursday afternoon; one of those calm winter days when the Atlantic was propelling perfectly formed rollers crowned with snowy white plumes of seaspray towards the shore. The phone clearly wasn’t up to it and I cursed myself for failing to do the simplest of things and putting the camera in the bag with a suitably long lens. The sense of lost opportunity from that beautiful day remained with me, and since then each time I’ve gone to the clifftop tooled up for action – albeit without a tripod.
I hadn’t intended to do anything more than take a couple of shots to dabble with half-heartedly in an idle moment in Lightroom later, but as we arrived at the view over the beach, two things caught my eye. Firstly, the swell was in a playful mood, with phases where groups of waves would break extravagantly across the scene. And secondly the cliffs beyond somewhere just off Portreath to the west had almost completely disappeared into a haze of sea mist. Normally from this spot you can see all the way across to St Ives, even on a dull day, but today things were different. And so the inevitable came home to roost. With seascapes every single image is unique, bringing the usual inability to know when to stop that afflicts me every time I’m in this situation, and my co-walkers were soon somewhere over the horizon above me on their circuit towards Chapel Porth of the eastern side of the cliff.
I really should have brought a tripod with me. I’d made my usual mistake of bringing the unforgiving but lightweight budget lens with the enormous focal range; the one where I’m never sure about exactly what it’s focusing on. I tried sitting on the grass, then balancing the camera on my knee and using the touchscreen autofocus, but I couldn’t really see the composition properly. Through the viewfinder I tried it alternately in autofocus and then in manual focus, producing another glut of raw files that would take some sifting later. As the time since I’d last seen Ali and Rosie increased, soft peachy tones began to gently warm the sky. With little idea as to whether I’d got a worthwhile shot, I eventually decided that enough was enough and chased off along the path in search of my companions. The inside of Ali’s car may resemble a farmyard as a result of the extracurricular dog walking activities, but getting into it was still far preferable to walking home. Besides which we might get a cup of tea at her sister’s house as a reward for our efforts.
Later that evening the sifting began. The good news was that each time I went through the many, image number 9048 stood out. After three passes through the lot of them, firstly on the PC’s photo viewing software and then in Lightroom, image 9048 was still the one that caught my attention. I think it was the two lines of breaking waves that singled it out. And gradually, very much like that Tamron lens and Porthtowan itself, the image grew on me. The energy of the ocean below me and the soft sky palette had conspired to win me over. Somehow from this unprepared adventure I’d managed to wrestle an image I thought worthy of sharing with this most discerning of audiences. I hope it passes muster.
Still wish I’d taken my tripod though. Do have a lovely weekend.
It's harvest time, and I can't escape the cucumbers. Luckily, I love them and eat at least two every day.

I’ve ever noticed these before but apparently they are quite common and there seems to be a glut of them this year making them more noticeable. They are produced by a tiny wasp called Neuroterus numismalis. Each of these tiny donut shaped structures is about 2mm across. Plenty of information on Wikipedia here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroterus_numismalis. I’m not big on macro photography but I thought I’d have a go with this interesting subject. Although the depth of this image is only two or three millimetres I got the best results by stacking several images in Affinity Photo.
