Shutterstock Captures the Essence of the CreativeMornings Community

Reality is not passive; we actively shape it with our thoughts and actions. Our personal universe is based on the stories we tell ourselves and the worldview through which we look out into the world.

In May 2016, CreativeMornings and Shutterstock (one of our global partners that makes our work possible), celebrated the theme of Reality.

Shutterstock surprised the community in 10 cities—London, San Francisco, Montreal, New York City, Vancouver, Singapore, Toronto, Berlin, and Chicago—by hiring local photographers to capture the diversity and backgrounds of their own CreativeMornings community.

Not only do we get to observe and study the work that was produced, but to also enter into the minds' behind the camera—how does their worldview shape their work and what do they hope to communicate? How do they use their lens to capture reality, and at the same time, inspire us to look into a new direction to change our reality?

We are excited to share the full album of portraits of our global creative community.

Cadmans Cottage is the oldest surviving residential building in Sydney, having been built in 1816 for the use of the governmental coxswains and their crews. The building is heavily steeped in the history of Sydney, also claiming the title as the first building to have been built on the shoreline of The Rocks area.

It is claimed that during high tide, the water would come within 8 feet (2.4 m) of Cadmans Cottage; however, due to the reclamation of land during the building of Circular Quay, the waterline has moved about 100 meters away since 1816. The building has had several different uses in its lifetime—first and foremost as the abode of the four governmental coxswains (from 1816 until 1845), the headquarters of the Sydney Water Police (from 1845 to 1864) and as the Sailor's Home (from 1865 to 1970).

Restoration of Cadmans Cottage began in 1972 after it was proclaimed a Heritage site under the National Parks and Wildlife Act and control of the site was handed over to the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority.

A major archaeological investigation occurred in 1988 (in preparation for the bicentennial redevelopment) and since then, only minor maintenance works have been completed on the building. The building is now used as the home for the Sydney Harbour National Parks Information Center, and is able to be viewed by the public.

John Cadman was born in 1772 and was transported to Australia in 1797 at the age of 25 for the crime of stealing a horse. He was pardoned by the Governor Macquarie in 1821. He is the namesake of this building, and he lived in it as the Superintendent of Boats, with his wife and two stepdaughters, from 1827 until his retirement in 1845, staying a total of 18 years, the longest time served by a governmental coxswain until the position was abolished after Cadman's retirement.

Every time I travel overseas I am confused by the mass of electrical wiring tacked to the outside of houses and businesses. I don't quite get it. Doesn't seem very safe and it sure can be an eyesore.

This for the Global Creative Photography Project's Theme of Electronics. Not what I wanted to do for it but it's something...

My entry for week 2 of Behind the Lens - Global Creative Photography Project. The theme for the week was upside-down and I had tried out a few ideas and in the end they just turned out bad. After talking with some people the only other idea I had would've been similar to this but I just really liked this one that I took a couple weeks so I figured I would add this one instead.

HY William Chan spent five months designing and producing the site-specific light installation "Palette of Urban Green".

Using 125 sustainable softwood timber pallets, Chan upcycles a common waste product to create a ‘palette’ of six simple yet elegant sculptures. He aims to transform a tree-filled landscape into an urban fabric of city high-rises. The revolving form of each tower allows for a magnificent and playful cacophony of lights. Each strip of energy-efficient LEDs will glow according to the movement of the expected 500,000 festival visitors.

Cycloide investigates the boundary between order and chaos.

Drawing heavily from minimalism and op art of the 60s, the geometric forms and repetition of the piece create subconscious order which is comfortable for the viewer, yet the moving colour and light is Rose’s way of disturbing the order with chaos.

24th May 2014, I went into the City of Sydney to view firsthand the spectacular VIVID SYDNEY 2014, a festival of light, music and ideas. This image is one of my long exposure photographs of the bright and colorful projections of light and patterns on the Sydney Opera House. These colorful projections were continuously changing making Sydney Harbour look like a piece of art.

Many of the ferries also had colorful lighting which just added to the bright and happy atmosphere created by this festival.

Coloring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; Vivid Aquatique immersive water theatre; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the Vivid Ideas Exchange featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.

The Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007. It is one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings and one of the most famous performing arts centers in the world.

The Sydney Opera House is on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It sits at the north-eastern tip of the Sydney central business district (the CBD), surrounded on three sides by the harbour (Sydney Cove and Farm Cove) and inland by the Royal Botanic Gardens.

WIPO Director General Daren Tang opened the regional meeting of heads of intellectual property (IP) offices of Latin America on October 4, 2022 in Lima, Peru.

During his address, Mr. Tang invited delegates to write a new chapter of IP together.

With trademark filings from across the region growing, venture capital investments increasing, and Latin America a dynamic engine of the global creative economy, Mr. Tang noted that governments, businesses, and individuals across the region are paying attention to IP more than ever before.

Mr. Tang pledged WIPO’s ongoing support as offices across Latin America continue their transformation journey, including through the creation of new projects that bring IP to the grassroots, unlocking IP financing, and supporting the use of WIPO’s Madrid System across the region.

The meeting took place during an official visit to Peru.

UP, and away! is the brainchild of a Singapore-based team of lighting designers, architects and engineers.

Consisting of five sets of psychedelic wings on recycled bicycles, the installation is inspired by a familiar childhood fantasy that many of us may identify with – one of flying free!

The wings are designed to light up according to the activities of the rider. For example, the faster one pedals the brighter the wings become. This is made possible through an intelligent circuit board that calculates the speed of each rotation with a magnetic switch which correspondingly controls the brightness of the LED lights.

'Vivid Aquatique #vividsydney is a completely immersive water theatre, combining a magic 20-metre wall of light, colour and music inspired by the fountains of Versailles. This is the first time a spectacular show of this scale has been staged in Australia.'

Last week, I went into the City of Sydney to view firsthand the spectacular VIVID SYDNEY, a festival of light, music and ideas. Vivid Sydney runs from 24 May – 10 June 2013.

This is one of my images I shot at our famous Darling Harbour; a beautiful fountain and aquatic display with pretty colors and lights, just one of the many changing scenes of the amazing Vivid Aquatique, part of the Vivid Sydney festival. It was so colorful and bright and beautiful to view, accompanied with music. The fountains would rise and fall with varying colors making a spectacular show enjoyed by the huge crowds.

Last week, I went into the City of Sydney to view firsthand the spectacular VIVID SYDNEY, #vividsydney a festival of light, music and ideas. Vivid Sydney runs from 24 May – 10 June 2013.

This image is one of my long exposure photographs of the bright and colorful projections of light on the Sydney Opera House. These colorful projections were continuously changing making Sydney Harbour look like a piece of art.

Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; Vivid Aquatique immersive water theatre; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the Vivid Ideas Exchange featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.

New Era Introducing is a global creative project showcasing unique talent from across the world. The project gives creative minds of tomorrow an opportunity to make their own statement using a blank New Era 59FIFTY as their canvas. Those judged to show the most unique display of self- expression will go on to form a touring gallery exhibition and be published in a limited edition New Era Introducing book.

I was fortunate enough to make it to Phase 2, which is to customize a blank fitted 59Fifty New Era cap. I had about a little over a week to get it completed, along with a paragraph describing my design and creative process. I also submitted a recording of my journey of my custom cap's creation that will be posted later on.

About my cap: My design inspiration comes from the concept of finding unity, balance, and harmony with various aspects of life.

Balance is derived from being whole and complete, to fulfill and live in a sense of harmony. The key to success is to unify all the different parts of your life while progressing and innovating.

I wanted to incorporate diverse styles, colors, pieces of artwork (aspects of life) into a whole unit to form a new, balanced, beautiful piece of art.

I wanted to inspire people to always innovate, never stagnate - don't be afraid to do new things or take risks, and always be yourself. Each of the artwork panels on the cap represents inspirations and motivations to guide you through life.

Dragon: supreme spiritual power, strength and good luck. Have power to live life to the fullest, be strong to conquer all and have good luck by your side.

Tiger: emblem of ferocity, courage and power. Provides protection, wards off harm and assures safety. Have strength and be powerful to combat life's challenges.

Phoenix: symbol of high virtue and grace, strength and resilience. Rises above its own ashes to soar to greater heights.

Koi: represents good fortune, courage and perseverance in the face of adversity. Defeat all obstacles in life to obtain the highest goals.

Circuitry: represents a dependency and attachment to making lives easier (technology), while letting all other things in life pass by. Get out, get going and experience other aspects of life!

Logo: keep it real, be true to yourself and never be afraid to show who you are and what you can do! Do not pretend to be or do something for gaining acceptance!

Jade (cap top and brim): a symbol that brings success, love, protection, and healing properties.

Sky Grass

by Kathryn and Martin Bevz.

Sky Grass is an evolution of the 2012 Vivid installation “Sea Grass” hanging from the railway overpass near Circular Quay Station.

The installation features 30km of hand-cut fibre optic cabling powered by individually controllable LED nodes. Ultra sonic sensors trigger vibrant colour effects as viewers pass underneath.
