Across the slope and up the path from the nesting gang gang pair was a twig-thin branch attractive to a tiny bird. In the blink of an eye it was gone; gone into an impossibly small hole in an impossibly narrow hollow branch. The bird was a spotted pardalote. This isn't that bird. But it was a sign, along with the incessant call of pardalotes, that this is mating season and pardalotes are about.
Down and around in a less natural, more densely planted and more diverse part of the gardens there was a momentary movement of a small bird on the trunk of a moderately large stringybark. It's likely that this was a Eucalyptus macrorhyncha and the little bird was a male spotted pardalote tugging at the thread-like strands of bark for which the tree is named. After collecting his prize, the little bird flew down to a thin branch before disappearing into a knot hole in another stringybark.
Once the just a bit gaudy male left the hole his elegant little girlfriend landed on his twig with her own contribution to the DIY decoration of their new nursery. This is she.
A hard decision is made by a man on the run. He is on the fence whether he will run or stay by his girlfriend's side.
The sign on the wall says no dumping to imply that he will probably stay with his girlfriend.
Moral of the story...dont bring your girlfriend along unless she is an olympian track and field runner.
