Shot for Active Assignment Weekly, theme "Freshness".

WIT

This is a piece of fresh ginger, put in front of a dark background and shot with a macro lens. On a tripod, so I could use a small aperture to bring out the details.

It always amazes me that beneath that dry skin so much freshness is hidden.

In post light corrections and I especially used the somewhat new "`texture" adjustment function

Torch ginger flowers may reach 17 to 20 feet (5 to 6 m.) in height. Plant it where it is somewhat protected from the wind, which can snap the shoots of this tropical plant. Due to the large height, growing torch ginger in containers may not be feasible. Learning how to grow torch ginger lilies will add unusual flowers to your outdoor display, available in a range of colors. The unusual torch ginger flowers may be red, pink or orange — blooming from colorful bracts. White blooms have been reported in some torch ginger plant information, but these are rare. Buds are edible and flavourful, and used in Southeast Asian cooking.

Beehive Ginger is an ornamental ginger native of Thailand and produces spectacular cones of flowering bracts that begin a greenish color and eventually age to a bright golden yellow, pink or red. Cones can be large, up to 20-30cm tall. The cones grow on a short spike from the base of the plant.

These flowers symbolise strength, prosperity as well as diversity.

The general flower meaning for ginger flowers is proud and majestic.

These flowers are sometimes used as substitute for roses.

History

Ginger, along with black pepper, were considered highly valuable trade commodities in 13th and 14nth century England.

One pound of ginger traded for the same amount as a sheep.

The country of India brought ginger to the Romans as far back as 2,000 years ago.

The Romans used the plant for its medicinal value.

The ginger family (Zingiberaceae) contains around 1,000 species of tropical perennial herbs.

Some gingers are cultivated for their edible rhizomes, which are used for as both a medicine and a culinary spice.

Other ginger plants, known as ornamental gingers, are grown primarily for their pleasing appearance.

Leafy cane-like stems arise from rhizomes to form a plant 3 to 15 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide.

Throughout the year, ginger plants produce stunning red blossoms that are often used in flower arrangements.

When growing gingers, remember, they love moist, well-drained soil and partial shade.

Ginger blooms come red, pink and white, have thick, very sturdy stems and are perfect to create height in a tropical arrangement.

They have a decidedly modern feel.

There was a "furimation" in our house this morning. That's an intervention with a Furminator. I couldn't take the shedding any longer. Ginger gave birth to a rather large ball of fur this morning!

We have wonderful ginger plants in the New Orleans yard- I had to cut them back a bit this weekend. Oh my- they just smell great!

Her dress is also handmade by her, definitely one of my most talented friends:)

She came with Amber on our recent trip :)

Maeve is the perfect redheaded beauty with her rich auburn hair, sparkling eyes and brilliant smile.

It fascinates me that even in black and white no one would have to look twice to know they are looking at a ginger/red headed girl.

Please view those delightful freckles in Large.

Thank you so much for your visit!

Annoyingly, this Ginger cat will insist on ‘photo bombing’ my pictures. This was last nights attempt at being a nuisance.

On of Graeme’s presents from the children.. a personalised Xbox controller... they call him Big Ginge... so had to get one to match...xx (he will deny he is ginger though)

Kahili ginger (Hedychium gardnerianum) grows on the property surrounding the vacation home we rented in Volcano Village on the Big Island. This ornamental plant, native to Asia, escaped cultivation and has become one of the worst invasive species in Hawaii's forests.

Shampoo ginger is a tropical plant with red pinecone-like flowers that can be used as a natural conditioner and cleanser. They actually sell a product derived from this plant... for hair care. (I've used it myself)
