I was just getting ready for bed, when I heard "EMERGENCY EMERGENCY EMERGENCY" over the BNSF road channel, and clear enough I knew it had to be close by. Sure enough, when the DS147 dispatcher answered, the details let themselves be known. While finishing up their 6.6 reverse move out of the Zulch siding and onto the main at NSS Zulch, two hoppers picked the points and went their own way down the siding.
No injuries, crew is fine, and I figured at 1 am, why not. Got to the scene, and other than the crew, I was first on location. I lit it up with my truck lights, overheard the DSP ask for the blocked crossing info. I wrote it down, and set off to go meet the Conductor who was checking rest of train.
After him catching up to me, I asking if he and he engineer were alright, and he assured me they were both fine.
I told him the correct crossing info, and after he relayed that to the engineer, I asked if I could snag a few photos for posterity; to which he said sure, get 'em in before the big wigs and the riggers arrive, as they're on their way..
Only two empty MWAX hoppers 3509 and 3676 involved, and those being the first two cars following the trailing locomotive. It's clear the trucks self disassembled.
I'm pretty hyped up.. 25 minutes from first call to my being on the scene.
I do need confirmation on the locomotive numbers..
And so, I present NSS Zulch derailment 2018.

Determined and obstinate to find the Grizzled Skipper I visited Merthyr Mawr for a third time on 2nd June. I almost gave up searching until suddenly and most unexpectedly; almost hidden from sight; resting on a dense patch of vegetation; the unmistakable shape of a Grizzled Skipper emerged! Excited, with camera shaking in my hands I quickly fired a picture. Too far away to make it a good shot. However, I thought that under the circumstances any proof of its tenacious survival would be a great bonus. In order to try and get a more macro-like image that wouldn’t need cropping, I held my breath and with slow sloth-like movements made my way forwards. Unfortunately, the inevitable rustling and snapping noise of feet treading on long grasses and bramble gave my presence away. No sooner had I placed one foot forward than ‘snap!’, it flew away, gone. Vanished out of sight, but not out of existence. The Grizzled Skippers of Merthyr Mawr had survived all manner of calamitous adversities. They had survived against all the odds and are very much alive!
