Today was sort of a "run and gun" day. Managed to snag this on my way home.

Can't believe how short the days are getting, and they're getting shorter.

If You Use Outlook E-Mail, Meet Xobni

By BRAD STONE

SAN FRANCISCO

Adam Smith was 12 when Microsoft introduced its desktop e-mail program, Outlook.

Outlook is now the most popular e-mail tool in the world, used by hundreds of millions of people. And Mr. Smith, now 23, thinks that the program is so poorly suited for most people’s intensive e-mail habits that he has co-founded a company, Xobni, intended to fix it.

“Using Outlook today is like taking a Volkswagen Beetle into space,” Mr. Smith said. “People are kind of exerting all these stresses upon it that it wasn’t originally designed to withstand.”

Xobni, based in San Francisco, is introducing a new tool on Monday that plugs into Outlook. Mr. Smith’s general complaint — one that is shared by many users of Outlook — is that the more the program is used, the slower it gets and the harder it is to search for e-mail addresses and phone numbers.

To solve these problems, Xobni (“inbox” spelled backwards and pronounced zob-nee) has produced free downloadable software that, once installed, indexes all the e-mail in Outlook and makes those messages quickly and easily searchable. The software, available at www.xobni.com, will also be sold to companies.

Other programs, like Google Desktop, perform that same basic index-and-search function. But Xobni, which its creators call an “intelligent filter,” adds a few more features. When it scours the inbox, it extracts phone numbers it thinks are associated with the sender. So when a user searches for a person, Xobni presents the number in a side panel to Outlook.

The software also interprets the social relationships between people who are sending messages to each other. For example Xobni recognizes that if an executive sends a copy to someone else on each message he or she sends, it might be to an assistant or another colleague. When someone using Xobni searches for that executive in Outlook, the second person is listed as well.

Extracting these social networking features from e-mail is an enticing proposition in Silicon Valley these days, and as a result, the San Francisco-based company and its 14 employees have become a magnet for attention.

The company raised $4 million from the investment funds of Vinod Khosla, a Sun Microsystems co-founder, and Niklas Zennstrom, one of the creators of Skype. In February, Bill Gates demonstrated the program at Microsoft’s San Jose developers’ conference and called it “the next generation in social networking.”

Microsoft loves it when developers improve its programs, and Xobni is no exception. But executives at the start-up describe an “awkward dance” with Microsoft over the last few months. This year, Microsoft and Xobni held preliminary talks about Microsoft acquiring the startup. But negotiations broke down over price, the future independence of the company inside Microsoft and the willingness of Xobni employees to move to Seattle.

The company was founded by two former graduate students, Mr. Smith in computer science and Matt Brezina, 27, in electrical engineering, who met on internships in Washington in 2006. Last year the co-founders went through a Silicon Valley start-up boot camp, called Y Combinator, where they received an initial investment and temporary offices.

Xobni now has ambitions that extend well beyond Microsoft Outlook. Jeff Bonforte, a 35-year-old former Yahoo vice president, joined Xobni as chief executive in February. He plans to expand Xobni’s reach to various e-mail programs, like the popular Web-based services Yahoo Mail, Google’s Gmail and Microsoft’s Hotmail as well as social networks like Facebook and Linkedin.

Mr. Bonforte imagines that one day when people type a name into the Xobni search box, the software will find e-mail, instant messages and other online communications from that person even if he or she sent those messages on several Web-based services.

“We want to know about the relationships that exist in multiple inboxes,” he said.

Xobni will face competition in its quest to improve online communications. All of the major Internet companies talk about making e-mail smarter and more socially aware. And Web e-mail services like Gmail and Hotmail are growing much more rapidly than the desktop-based Outlook, where Xobni is planting its flag, for now.

At Yahoo in particular, Mr. Bonforte’s former colleagues have frequently spoken publicly about pursuing the next generation of “smart” e-mail.

“We feel like there’s a rich opportunity to create a smarter inbox by leveraging the people you are connecting to and contacting to most often,” said Brad Garlinghouse, a Yahoo senior vice president and Mr. Bonforte’s former boss. “That is a key initiative for Yahoo in 2008.”

This series complements my award-winning guidebook, Chicago in Stone and Clay: A Guide to the Windy City's Architectural Geology. Henceforth I'll just call it CSC.

The CSC section and page reference for the building featured here: 9.2; pp. 142-144.

Looking northward, along the eastern elevation.

And finally we're outdoors. This oblique view of the station's Canal Street facade shows its grand Tuscan-order colonnade.

The Tuscan style resembles the Doric, but it's even less adorned, with unfluted column shafts.

And it's these columns that are one of Chicago's finest examples of the effective use of America's most widely distributed architectural rock type, the Salem Limestone.

Note that the shafts are not monolithic, but rather are composed of tall drums mortared together. This technique of modular column construction is an ancient one that goes back to classical Greece and no doubt even farther.

Regarding the stone itself, the Salem has many virtues, but its finely granular texture does not permit high-gloss polishing. Nevertheless, it can be shaped, carved, and smooth-sawn very readily. Here the flat and buff-colored stone surfaces impart the perfect stately-and-restrained effect.

The Salem, known in the building trades as "Bedford Stone" and "Indiana Limestone," is quarried in southern portion of the Hoosier State. Petrologically speaking, it's a grainstone and biocalcarenite composed of small fossils (whole forams and invertebrate fragments) in a matrix of calcite cement. It formed in a warm, shallow-marine environment of lagoons and tidal channels in the Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous) subperiod, some 340 Ma ago. At that point, much of the American Midwest was covered by an epeiric (continent-covering) sea.

For more on this site, get and read Chicago in Stone and Clay, described at its Cornell University Press webpage.

The other photos and discussions in this series can be found in my "Chicago in Stone and Clay" Companion album. In addition, you'll find other relevant images and descriptions in my Architectural Geology: Chicago album.

One step after another

Right now you can take one step, one clear and unambiguous step, toward whatever it is that you most desire. Situations and circumstances may seem to work against you, yet nothing can stop you from taking at least one positive step forward.

When tomorrow dawns, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re already well underway. Then take another step, and suddenly you’ve created a powerful momentum.

You can get anywhere you wish to go by moving toward it every opportunity you get. One step after another will surely get you there. Yes, it would be nice to make big leaps, and perhaps you’ll have the opportunity to do so along the way. In the meantime, though, keep taking one step after another.

Even on days when the going gets rough, there’s a way to move forward at least one step. Keep in mind that you’ve taken those steps before and you can surely do it again.

Put time on your side, and put momentum on your side. Take one step forward every chance you get, and you’ll end up getting wherever you want to go.

If you look back in my stream, this is the baby in the 4D ultrasound picture (that was yawning) that I used in the parent's maternity session.

This pretty little girl just woldn't sleep for her newborn session today...you'll have that.

We tried putting a cute knitted hat on her and she wan't having that either. Her hand kept slpping off of the edge of the basket, so I took what I could get and this is it. :) I think it's still cute anyway!

This is my first official session with the studio lights...I have to learn the tricks of the trade! If anyone knows of a good group to join for studio lighting techniques, I'd love any suggestions!

I found the basket at a yard sale...you can find many neat props at yard sales very inexpensive!

Heavy rains caused some flooding in Joshua Tree National Park about two weeks before I visited. A very short section of the park road was washed out a few miles north of here causing traffic to be restricted to one lane, but considering the "traffic" was usually no heavier than seen in the photo, that didn't cause me any delays. Signs of the storm were still readily apparent in the form of sand that had shifted in the washes and even in my campsite with little trenches that must have carried lots of water still visible. The park did a good job getting and keeping the roads open; sand was still piled high next to the road as if it had been plowed in many areas.

This was taken on Cottonwood Springs Road about 1/4 mile north of I-10, just before entering Joshua Tree. The park roads were actually in much better condition than the public highway seen here; there was little to no sand remaining in most areas.

I took this photo from Cascade, which is a famous spot equally loved by the locals and tourists in Yerevan. Built in Soviet times and reconstructed last summer, it's basically a loooooooong cascade-like stairway which joins one part of Yerevan to another. You can either take an elevator to go up or walk up (if your'e healthy enough :). I was standing below middle level when I took this photo. So the upper you go, the better view you get...and the more in-loves you meet sitting in the dark corners :) (yea, now you why I chose "for children & families" level, hehe :) If the sky is clear you'll see mountain Ararat right infront of you. I took another photo where it's seen. Not a very good one, but I'll post it.

"home" in Armenian is "toon"

A beer coaster from Suehiro, a steak restaurant in Kyoto that served Kobe (or Matsuzaka) beef. My brother David and I ate there two of our four days in Kyoto. Savid said that every time he goes to a good steak house, he has his own ideas of what he should get, and this was one of the few places where he actually got it.

As sith other restaurants in Japan, the beer mat / coaster advertises the restaurant. I probably drank Kirin beer, my favorite of the four major brands.

I have not found an internet site for Suehiro, but I have seen other sites that say Suehiro is now a chain in several major Japanese cities.

Painting and markings:

Basically very simple: I relied upon FAU Pucarás as benchmark, which carry a rather unremarkable NATO-style livery in dark grey and dark green over very light grey, almost white undersides. This does not sound interesting, but it’s not a color combo typically seen on a Skyhawk, so that this already offers a subtle whiffy touch – and it suits the Skyhawk IMHO well.

To make the simple scheme more interesting, though, I decided to apply the camouflage in a more disruptive, higher resolution pattern, using the Kuwaiti A-4KU pattern as benchmark, just with replaced colors. On real-life pictures, the Uruguayan Pucarás as well as some early A-37s show a good contrast between the green and the grey, so that I chose Tamiya XF-62 (U.S. WWII Olive Drab) and Humbrol 156 (RAF Dark Camouflage Grey) as basic tones; the undersides were painted in Humbrol 147 (FS 36495), leaving a brightness margin for post-shading with an even lighter tone.

The landing gear as well as the air intakes’ interior were painted in white, the landing gear covers’ edges received a thin red edge. The cockpit interior became standard Dark Gull Grey.

For good contrast with the light undersides, the rocket launchers became light grey (Humbrol 127) drab. The MERs became classic white and the ten 250 lb bombs were painted in olive drab.

As usual, the kit received an overall light black ink washing and some post-panel shading, which also acts as a weathering measure. Esp. the Pucarás’ grey appears very bleached on many photos.

Roundels, fin flash and FAU taglines came from the aforementioned Airfix Pucará sheet, even though they turned out to be rather thick and not printed sharply. Most stencils were taken from an Airfix A-4Q Skyhawk, one of the new mold kits, which also came with Argentinian markings and stencils in Spanish. The respective sheet also provided a decal for the black anti-glare panel, even though it had to be cut in two halves to fit in front of the wider A-4E windshield, and the resulting gap was painted out with black. The tactical codes once belonged to a Kawasaki T-4 (Hasegawa). The soot-hiding squares above the gun muzzles are generic black decals. The only decal that was taken over from the Skyhawk’s OOB decal sheet were the rings around the arrester hook.

Overall, the FAU Skyhawk still looked rather dry. To add some excitement, I gave the aircraft a wild boar “face”, similar to the FAU Pucarás. The decoration originally belongs to an USAF A-10 and came from a HiDecal sheet. Unfortunately, this boar face was carried by a rather special A-10 with an experimental desert paint scheme consisting of Brown (FS 20140), Tan Special (FS 20400) and Sand (FS 20266) that was applied before deployment to Saudi Arabia in November 1990. This scheme did not catch on, though, and most A-10s retained their murky Europe One/Lizard scheme. Therefore, the artwork consists primarily of black and sand – white would have been better, stylistically. But I took what I could get and, as a kind of compensation, the sand color does not make the boar snout stand out too much. To my surprise, the four decals that create the wraparound hog face fitted quite well in size and around the Skyhawk’s rather pointed nose. I just left the nostrils away because they’d look odd together with the small black radome and a small ventral gap between the mouth halves had to be bridged with black paint and another piece of decal sheet that simulates a di-electric cover.

Finally, the model was sealed with matt acrylic varnish and ordnance as well as landing gear were mounted.

The back of my City Green quilt. I wanted to make it look somewhat like a closeup/zoomed-in portion of the front. I didn't quite get that effect because the sashing is too narrow but I still really like the effect that I did get and I love how visible the quilting is. The sashing is 2" wide (finished) and is Kona Cotton in Charcoal. The four different greens are all Kona Cotton in Asparagus, Cactus, Chartreuse, and Grass.

Quilt details and a photo of the front are here.

I recently uploaded this picture of McDonald's "Texas Burger" and was less than satisfied with how it turned out compared to its advertised version. I guessed that less could go wrong in the second installment of the series thanks to the lettuce provided some degree of protection against a squished burger and I was right. While not perfect, this is as close as you might expect a high-volume burger chain to get, and it tasted alright (though similar to Lotteria's "Zetsumyo" burger which launched to a lot less fanfare).

I tried to capture some geese that quickly flew by me this morning. I am not as good at this as some of my contacts who have fabulous captures. This is about all i could get and decided that a different crop might add some interest to this shot.

Got there late, didn't shoot right away but wanted to get some and pretty happy with what I got. Man my fingers were freezing i need some camera friendly gloves.

Sony Alpha 7

Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 II I believe all shot at 1.2

First time shooting manual focus and really liked it, rewarding to know you worked to get the results you get and can work to improve in the future.

This would be the sometime-to-be-disappeared Sovereign House, that was, in its time, the home of Her Majesty's Stationery Office. From an Evening News story by Dan Grimmer:

"One of the most iconic buildings which is currently in a state of limbo is Sovereign House at Anglia Square. Reminders of its time as Her Majesty’s Stationery Office have been left behind amid the derelict buildings.

Built in the 1960s, the building in Anglia Square was once the official publishing and stationery department of the UK’s government and home to more than 800 staff.

But it closed at the end of the 1990s and today it remains in limbo. Centenary Ashcroft has plans to demolish it as part of a redevelopment scheme for Anglia Square, but the recession has stalled that scheme for now.

A Norwich City Council spokesman said: “Permission has been granted for the demolition of Sovereign House as part of redevelopment of the area.

“Gildengate House is part occupied, but also has permission to be demolished under the same scheme. However, a new application is expected to be submitted in the new year for a scheme that includes the refurbishment of this block for offices.”

In the meantime, Sovereign House looms over the north of the city, a reminder of the vision of the future which planners had half a century ago."

It is listed in the Norwich City Council conservation area appraisal for Anglia Square as a 'negative landmark', which makes me like it even more.

This panaorama is effectively an 'unwrapping' of the building, as I walked around the entirety of it, attempting to maintain a consistent distance, while taking photos about every 20 metres, which, if you know the place, is practically impossible. I then stitched the photos together to make this panaoramic view of all four sides. If you print this out and fold it in the right places, you can reconstruct your own table-top Sovereign House. Probably.

I did all this about three years ago and have always wondered when I would actually get around to properly merging the joins between the 20+ photos included here. I now know the answer to that is 'never'. I started doing it, as you can see if you look closely at the first couple of joins, but after a few days, I realised I'd need a few weeks, and didn't continue. I did make sure the building itself was properly aligned as far as I could, so that all the windows line up and the corners unravel consistently, but even that was tricky when I simply couldn't get far enough from the building on the upper levels to take a photo without strongly warped perspective.

So this is as good as it will get. And I can't be bothered to do any more to it. I can even be bothered to fix the sky. If anybody wants the original photoshop layered file, you're welcme to poke around in it.

As a permanent record, I think its quite intriguing. As a project, I think its quite ridiculous.

Sovereign House, Anglia Square, Norwich, UK

Massive view

A rarity, locos facing out of Mallaig on the Jacobite trains are extremely rare.

The week following the summer solstice is not one I would normally choose to visit the West Highland,, with the sun as high in the northern hemisphere as it gets and the mid day light as harsh as it gets, But with 45407 facing Fort William and a good forecast it was worth the trip.

A bonus being the loco carried no headboard (or indeed nameplates)

Leaving Mallaig with the air cool enough for exhaust.

Light pole installation appears to have reached Span #26. This is the best angle I could get and not trespass into closed areas.

In all honesty, I haven't done any animation in 3 or 4 weeks, this is the first I've done. I couldn't really find the time, with all the homework I've been getting (and because I just got BF3, lol), I'll try and get this up within the next few weeks, I'm just on finishing touches now.

In hindsight, I probably should've added a motion blur to those falling bricks...

[Black Sabbath - Snowblind]

[System Of A Down - Snowblind]

What you get and what you see

Things that don't come easily

Feeling happy in my vein

Icicles within my brain

(cocain)

Something blowing in my head

Winter's ice, it soon will spread

Death would freeze my very soul

Makes me happy, makes me cold

My eyes are blind but I can see

The snowflakes glisten on the tree

The sun no longer sets me free

I feel there's no place freezing me

Let the winter sun shine on

Let me feel the frost of dawn

Fill my dreams with flakes of snow

Soon I'll feel the chilling glow

Don't you think I know what I'm doing

Don't tell me that it's doing me wrong

You're the one who's really a loser

This is where I feel I belong

Crystal world with winter flowers

Turns my day to frozen hours

Lying snowblind in the sun

Will my ice age ever come?

Well my Canon Powershot S5 IS broke today :(! 'tis a sad day for me :(!

It's been such a great camera for the 4 or so years that I have had it!

Unfortunately the lens seems to have gotten stuck open like this and wont close and wont allow the camera to turn on. "Lens Error, Please restart", it says.

Sigh! I'm cameraless for the time being but hopefully Friday (if no unexpected bills come) I will purchase a new camera.

Being a student everything has to be budgeted. And I need to find the room for a new camera. Wish me luck!

My options for a new camera are:

-The up to date version of my camera: NOT A DSLR Canon SX20 IS or Canon SX30 IS

- Sony Alpha A330 (or A320) 10.2MP DSLR

- Nikon D3000 DSLR

- And they had a Canon EOS XS there in my price range. (maybe sold out before friday :( )

- They also had an Olympus SLR but I can't remember the model)

Any advice or help would be appreciated!!!

Final thought: :( :( :( :( :(

UPDATE

Okay Everyone, I've Narrowed it down to Three Cameras:

#1 Canon Powershot SX30 IS 35X Zoom 14.1 MP Same price as the Olympus

#2 Olympus Evolt E-420 DSLR 10 MPSame price as the canon

#3 Sony Alpha A330 DSLR 10.2 MP Cheapest of the three

The Canon is not an SLR but it's the newest technology of the three, And when I used it it felt so comfortable as It very similar to the S5. I also picked up the other 2 and quickly figured out my favourite settings.

In your opinion which should I get and why? Thanks guys for all the comments and imput! Any information/opinions helps!

Here is a comparison Chart between the three!

Looking at the Comparison Chart I notice that the DSLRs don't have zoom capabilities... Would I need a specific lens for the zoom? How does that work?

Looks (to me) like the Canon has overall better settings than the two SLRs.

Also SLRs don't seem to film video.......

He qualified for the 1915 star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal – although the 1915 Star was issued showing his rank as 2nd Lieutenant. The card notes that he was Killed in Action between the 22nd and 24th November 1915. As with all officers his medals had to be applied for – in this case posthumously by his widow in June 1924. She gave her address then as Melbourne House, Crowborough, Sussex.

The 1916 Probate Calendar records that Richard Ayres Ritchie of Overstrand Lodge, Cromer, Norfolk died between the 22 and 24 November 1915 at Ctesiphon in Mesoptamia killed in action. Probate was granted at the London Court on the 30th October 1916 to Enid Kathleen Ritchie, widow, and Archibald Thomas Ayres Ritchie, lieutenant in Grenadier Guards. His effects were valued at £273 4s 1d.

He is remembered on the Roll of Honour for Sedbergh School, Yorkshire, which in turn is featured on the website “Craven Remembers” which also includes a different cut of this picture.

There are a number of pictures of the pre-war School Cadet Force here:-

The site notes that he was born 10th November 1891 and that he was at the school from 1905 to 1910. There is more on his sporting prowess as well as his interest in Natural History. Although he did go to Oxford, the site adds he only spent a few terms at Oxford, before moving to British Columbia to start a fruit ranch.

Richard is also on the War Memorial in the Library at Trinity College, Oxford, shown in the names for the year 1910, which is probably the year he started there.

Richard is also listed in the Book of Remembrance in the church of St Martin, Overstrand, the wooden memorial in the church and the war memorial in the churchyard – see comments box below for images. The entry in the Book of Remembrance reads:

Son of Thomas and Alice Ritchie. Born at Newton House, Ireland, November 1891. Educated at Sedburgh School and Trinity College, Oxford. Married Enid Stuckey, April 1915. Joined the Norfolk Regt. February 1915. Lieutenant. Died of wounds received in Mesopotamia., November 1915.

There are another two pictures of Lieutenant Ritchie aboard the SS Arabia, which was ferrying reinforcements from London bound for Bombay in May 1915.

A younger brother, Thomas Pearsall Ayers Ritchie , born 28th July 1894, also attended Sedbergh, in his case from 1908 to 1913. A Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade, he would fall on the 15th March 1915. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial. The Sedbergh School Pilgrimage site believes he too has a connection to the Cromer area.

(Thomas, like his brother, is remembered at St Martin, Overstrand. Neither appear on the Cromer memorials.)

1891/92 – Birth………………….

The Sebergh School website records him as born on the 10th November 1891

The Overstrand Memorial Books records him as born in November 1891.

The birth of a Richard Ayres Ritchie was registered with the Civil Authorities in the Naas District of Ireland in the January to March quarter, (Q1), of 1892.

Source: www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FB6C-SZL

Then, as now, you had 42 days after the event to register the birth without facing prosecution and a fine in the UK – of which the whole of Ireland was a part at that time. Thus the date of birth in the Overstrand records and the period of registration in the civil record are not entirely incompatible – although it is close.

The birth register is available online, but the exact date is difficult to make out other than it was November 1891 and that the birth was registered on the 5th February 1892. His father was Thomas Ritchie, a Farmer of Newtown Strabban.

Naas is the County Town of County Kildare, now in the Republic of Ireland.

1901 Census of England and Wales

This may be a complete co-incidence but the 1901 census has a 9 year old “Dick” Ritchie, born Ireland, who was recorded as a Student Boarder at Suffield Park School, Cromer. Amongst the other pupils on the same page is an 11 year old “Archie” Ritchie, also from Ireland.

1911 Census of England and Wales

On the 1911 census the 19 year old Richard Ayres Ritchie, from Kildare, Ireland, and an Oxford University student, is recorded as a visitor at 105 Jermyn Street, Westminster, London. This is a lodging house, but seems to have a mix of boarders and visitors.

The 21 year old Archibald Thomas Ayres Ritchie, also from Kildare, Ireland, and a Student, was recorded as a boarder at the Lands End Hotel, Semmen, Cornwall.

The most likely candidate for Richards future wife is an Enid Kathleen Stuckey, aged 17 and from Lewes, Sussex, who was recorded as a student boarder at Cheltenham Girls College.

A Richard Ritchie, born Ireland circa 1891 sailed aboard the SS Empress of Britain bound for St. John, New Brunswick, Canada in March 1912. He had been a Scholar but looks like he was heading to Canada to become a Farmer. His final destination looks like Baynes Lake, British Columbia. (The newspaper report has him returning from Canada to take up a Commission.)

Source: www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2HGY-VBT

The marriage of a Richard A Ritchie to Enid K Stuckey was recorded in the Steyning District of Sussex in the January to March 1915 quarter - which doesn’t quite tie in with the Book of Remembrance details.

It may be a co-incidence, but the birth of a Richard D Ritchie, mothers maiden name Stuckey, was recorded in the Steyning District of Sussex in the January to March 1916 quarter. This is the only instance of this combination in England and Wales up until 2006, when the on-line records I have access to ends. It does not look like Enid ever remarried - the death of an Enid Kathleen Ritchie, born 11th June 1891, was recorded in the Uckfield District of Sussex in the April to June quarter of 1975.

The Overstrand connection

The British Ornithologists Union Quaterly for 1914 lists amongst its members an Archibald Thomas Ayres Ritchie of Magdalen College and Overstrand, near Cromer, Norfolk.

(This is presumably the same Archibald who was one of the Executors of Richards estate.)

From 1907 onwards a Thomas Ritchie appears on the Norfolk Register of Electors as entitled to vote in Parliamentary, County Council and Civil Parish Council elections as he was the householder of the dwelling house Overstrand Lodge, Overstrand.

On the 1911 Census of England & Wales the 52 year old Norman Ritchie, born Kill, Ireland and living on “Private Means”, was recorded as the married head of the household at Overstrand Lodge, Overstrand, Cromer. He lives there with his wife Alice Jane, (45, born Edgbaston, Warwickshire). The couple have been married 21 years and have had four children, although only three were then still alive. There were also four live-in servants.

Thomas was recorded on the 1912 to 1915 editions of the Norfolk Register of Electors – production of the 1916 & 1917 editions were cancelled nationally.

On the day…………………………………

While the CWGC and SDGW records him as died on the 22nd, the Medal Index Card and the Probate Calendar records him as killed in action between the 22nd and 24th.

For the following the sources are the journals of Major F.C. Lodge, commanding the 2nd Battalion, Norfolk Regiment (Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum), and Captain A.J. Shakeshaft, also of the 2nd Battalion (The National Archives).

The force which advanced on the road to Baghdad, on 19th November 1915, consisted of the 6th Division, the Cavalry Brigade, the 30th Brigade (12th Division), and forty two guns of all sorts – a total strength of under 14,000 combatants, of whom 8,500 were infantry. Of the Turkish forces, Captain Amarinder Singh writes this:

‘Townshend now estimated the enemy strength at 13,000 regular infantry and thirty-eight guns, The Turkish account puts the strength of the 15th Division comprising the 7th, 9th, and 44th Regiments, which had recently arrived, up to 18,000 troops. The Turkish account further adds that the 35th and 38th Divisions were in a better condition than they had been at Kut, although their morale was comparatively low. The 51st Division, comprising Anatolian Turks and the 45th were in good shape.’

20th November 1915: “Left Zuur about 8 am. We formed the vanguard with the 110th as the main guard, cavalry ahead. A certain amount of opposition from the enemy’s cavalry. Reached Lujj… [A seven mile march on a dusty road] Received orders to move with 110th at least 2 miles up the Baghdad road… [To reconnoitre, take ranges, and cover the Lujj camp] Saw a few of the enemy’s cavalry who ‘haired off’ as we approached. I could see the Arch of Ctesiphon quite distinctly this morning. Had a conference of C.O.’s and Adj’s at 12 noon on the prospected night march… Battalion marched off to our starting point at 6.40 pm. We had a meal about 5 pm. … Left divisional rendezvous at 8.30 pm in 3 columns, A. B. C. & Cavalry. Bad going at first but improved later. (Diary of F. C. Lodge)

We now obtained a good view of the famous arch of Ctesiphon, said to be the ruins of the banquetting hall of the Phoenician kings. It stands out like some gigantic building as compared to the puny objects around. The enemy’s position consisting of many miles of trenches and reboubts formidably protected by barbed wire entanglements, all around the famous arch.” (Diary of A.J. Shakeshaft)

21st November 1915: On the 21st, Townshend issued his operational orders. Column ‘A’ under Major General Delamain consisting of the 16th Infantry Brigade (2nd Dorsets and 104th Rifles) and the 30th Brigade (24th Punjabis, less half battalion, the 2/7 Gurkhas, the 66th Punjabis, and the 117th Mahrattas), the 82nd Battery Royal Field Artillery (six guns), the 1/5 Hants Howitzers (four guns), and half a company of the 22nd Sappers.

Column ‘B’ under Brigadier General W.G. Hamilton comprised the 18th Infantry Brigade (2nd Norfolks, 7th Rajputs, 110th Mahrattas, and the 120th Infantry [Rajputanas], the 63rd Battery R.F.A. (six guns), and half a company of the 22nd Sappers.

Column ‘C’ under Brigadier General F.A. Hoghton included the 17th Infantry Brigade (1st Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 22nd Punjabis, 103rd Mahrattas (less half battalion), and the 119th Infantry, 76th Battery R.F.A. (six guns), 86th Heavy Battery R.F.A. (one section two guns), 17th Company Sappers, 48th Pioneers, and one squadron of the 23rd Cavalry Divisional Cavalry).

A ‘flying column’ under Major General Mellis comprised the 6th Cavalry Brigade, 6th Battery R.F.A. (six guns), 7th Lancers (four squadrons), 16th Cavalry (three squadrons, 33rd Cavalry (three squadrons), Maxim Battery, motor machine-gun section (two armoured cars and two lorries), 76th Punjabis with enough transport to carry half the battalion at a time.

His plan, in brief, was for Column ‘C’ to carry out a preparatory attack, Column ‘B’ with the ‘Flying Column’ to launch the turning attack, and Column ‘C’ would then carry out the decisive onslaught. The columns would move out on the night of 21-22 November.

At 0700 on the 22nd, the naval bombardment of the Turkish defences commenced. All the columns advanced as planned and the battle continued all day with the Turks moving in reinforcements as and when required to check any British breakthrough. Townshend had no reserves.

2nd Norfolks

“Reached our rendezvous, ie the gap in the dry high level canal about 2 am. … We took up a position of readiness and then took any rest that was going… At dawn we could see the enemy in formed bodies about 4 miles off; a squadron of Turkish cavalry approached but no notice was taken as we did not want to disclose our whereabouts. … The 110th and ourselves issued from our position about 7.45 am in Artillery formation. We were on the right. We moved over perfectly level ground with no cover of any sort. The visibility of objects was very difficult owing to mirage. We advanced in perfect silence for some time when suddenly rifle & machine gun fire was opened upon us and we were soon heavily engaged. … We could make very little progress and we were being heavily fired into from our right. … I was hit… just as I had got into the 1st line, the shot came from the right point and luckily for me I had just turned to the left to see how things were going, the bullet passing obliquely under my left ribs. It knocked me over for a time. Cramer Roberts took over command from me. I had a most unpleasant hour or so lying out in the open: there were 3 or 4 machine guns firing hard, luckily they were all high. … I reached the field dressing station where I found several officers and men, some badly wounded, also a Turkish officer. … Stayed at the field ambulance for some considerable time and then orders came for us to move to V.P. or (Vital Point) the strong point in the Turkish position, which had been captured by us. We made to make a long detour as the Turkish Artillery was busy. At last we reached a point somewhere near V.P. and were preparing to doss down when we were ordered to move inside the barbed wire round V.P. as it was not considered safe outside owing to marauding Arabs. The trenches were filled with dead Turks and, where I eventually laid down, the odour was so unpleasant that they had them either removed or buried. Spent a most uncomfortable night, ground very hard and there was constant movement of carts close to us which raised clouds of dust. No food since yesterday except a tin of milk between 4 of us. Luckily the Turks had had enough so there was little or no firing during the night. (Diary of F. C. Lodge)

In all we were 21 officers and 519 men in the Battalion. Two of the officers… were with Brigade Headquarters.

We tried to snatch a few hours sleep, but it was a bitterly cold night and lying on the hard ground without even a blanket was hardly conducive to sleep. As a matter of fact I did get and hour or two sleep and woke up about daybreak, with a dreadful cramp and feeling stiff in every joint of my body. We sat and shivered munching hardboiled eggs and biscuits, awaiting events.

At about 8 a m. our Battalion moved out from behind the cover of the sandhills. … After advancing for about half an hour in artillery formation, we came under very heavy rifle fire… Even at this early stage of the day we began to get a large number of casualties. Cooke was hit in the foot, whilst I was talking to him, so I had to leave him to be carried back by the stretcher bearers. Major Lodge was also wounded early in the day, probably from the fire of one of the machine guns, which the Turks had cleverly concealed.

By about 11 a.m. the whole Battalion was in the firing line and we were advancing by short rushes under a hail of bullets. About 11.30 we found it impossible to advance further owing to the heavy casualties we were suffering…

About 1 p.m. …the order came down the line from Major Cramer-Roberts, now commanding the Battalion, to advance. So we sprang forward and gained another 100 to 150 yards by short rushes. Just as we were about to move off, my company sergeant major Porter was hit in the foot. I pulled off his boot and told Corporal Edwards who was near me to look after him, as I had to lead my company forward.

About 2.30 or 3 p.m. I noticed a number of troops, possibly about 3 battalions, advancing across our left front out of a sunken road on the river bank, at about 1400 yards range. The question was were they Turks or our own Column C. Owing to the dense mirage I could not make out for certain. But presently our guns opened fire on them and there was no longer any doubt. They were Turkish troops who had crossed the river and were preparing to launch a counter-attack. … To our front the view was distinctly unpleasant, the country appeared to be black with troops massing for the counter-attack. They proceeded to advance in thick masses, all had their bayonets fixed. I distinctly saw the sun’s rays shining on them.

Our left flank [was] exposed, so we had to retire back to our original positions. As soon as we reached our old position Corporal Edwards asked me if he might go back and bring some men in. He went out three times a distance of some 100 yards, under a hail of bullets, bound up three men’s wounds and carried them back on his shoulder in rear of our line. I recommended this act of heroism very highly and the G.O.C., Division, recommended him for the V.C. Northcote was dangerously wounded during this retirement and had to be carried in.”

It was great relief to me when the sun went down, for we all felt sure that the enemy would never counter-attack by night., after the appalling loses he must have suffered during the day.

As was usual in all our battles there were no ambulances, nothing but transport carts in which the wretched wounded had to suffer hellish agonies, jolting over the uneven ground. It was a hideous nightmare, this walk back some 1400 yards, through a mass of dead or suffering and shattered humanity. I found Major Drum, our Brigade Major, he gave me orders that we were to retire on V.P. and some limbered wagons, the only sort of vehicle available, were sent out to bring in the wounded. I shall never forget the sight of one poor fellow with a compound fracture in the leg trying to sit or hang on to a limbered wagon. Before retiring we searched round the field and brought in all our wounded, the dead had to be left on the field. At about 8 p.m. the Battalion formed up and commenced retirement on V.P. There was no firing now, but the numerous camp fires in the distance showed that the Turks had not fled to Baghdad or even beyond the Diala.

We reached V.P. about 11 p.m. after a very tiring march and were allotted a position inside the wire enclosure by the Staff captain. The place was one mess of corpses after fighting here earlier in the day. Fortunately we met our mess cart at V.P. and had some hot tea and food and then tried to snatch a few hours sleep in preparation for what might await us on the morrow. The night was dreadfully cold. Hall and I lay side by side with our greatcoats and a Turkish blanket over us, but the cold was so intense that every now and then we had to get up and walk about.” (Diary of A.J. Shakeshaft)

Fighting for their lives, Townshend’s exposed men found their rifles jammed with dust, and were obliged to kick back the bolt after each shot – thereby exposing their heads to the sniper’s bullet. … Separated from their battalions, men formed scratch units and fought till they had no more ammunition. Then they lay low and fell instantly asleep. …

By 1700 hours, Townshend had come to the conclusion that he would not make any further advance that day and ordered the columns to concentrate at ‘VP’ (‘Vital Point’ – Ctesiphon) for a renewed attack the next morning. As the concentration took place, Townshend, however, came to the conclusion that casulaties were exceedingly high and it would not be possible to renew the attack. General Hoghton could muster 700 men, General Delamain 1000, and General Hamilton about 850.

The casualties suffered by Townshend were very heavy. Of the 317 officers, 130 had been killed or wounded; 111 Indian officers had become casualties out of the 255 that went into battle that morning and of the 12,000 other ranks, over 4,200 had been killed or wounded. The 24th Punjabis, 104th Rifles and the 110th lost 60 per cent of their strength. The Turkish casualties were put at 9,500, though Turkish accounts put them at 6,188.

When day dawned on 23rd November the results of yesterday’s battle were clearly seen on the bloodstained field, strewn with the dead of both sides; for if the British had suffered heavily, the enemy had lost still more. The casualties in the Norfolk battalion had been terrible; half the machine-gun section had been wiped out but the rest of it were doing determined service, for which Lieutenant Campbell afterwards received the Military Cross. At nightfall General Townshend decided to establish his force in the captured Turkish first line trenches, and the 18th Brigade were withdrawn to V.P.

Trenches were full and spewing over with dead. Piles of Turkish corpses, dyed yellow with lyddite, lay everywhere. In every irrigation ditch the water ran red as those who were slightly wounded attempted to keep those who were helpless or unconscious from dying. Every dried-up water-course was littered with wounded who, frozen over-night, groaned with thirst now that the sun was high. A crazy convoy of of ammunition and commissariat carts jolted load after load of bleeding men to the river’s edge – passing an endless line of men who preferred to crawl.

Colonel Lodge being now one of the wounded, his diary departs for a few days from that of Captain Shakeshaft.

“In the morning I found that the regiment was near & Cramer Roberts came round to see me and from him I learnt that our casualties had been very heavy especially amongst the officers, 14 out 19 had been either killed or wounded. (Diary of F. C. Lodge)

When day dawned a dreadful sight presented itself to our gaze, the trenches in V.P. were filled with dead Turks and outside the wire were scores of bodies of our own men. Early in the morning Q.M. Sergeant Eastel arrived with ration carts from Lejj, so that the men were able to have a meal, the first they had had since leaving Lejj on the evening of the 21st. Shortly after breakfast I had to read out to a “battalion” of 250 men a communiqué from Sir John Nixon to the effect that we were to remember that the goal set before us by our King and Country was still to be attained – namely the capture of Baghdad… This published to a force that had lost more than 50 percent of its fighting strength, while the enemy had been reinforced by several divisions sent down by rafts from Mosul.”

Colonel Nur-ud-Din, aware of Townshend’s predicament, launched an attack at 14.30 hours which carried on throughout the night and the next day, and by 1930 hours on the 25th, General Townshend had ordered the withdrawal to Lajj.

The 22nd November 1915 saw the Battle of Ctesiphon involving British and Indian Army units who were attempting to advance on Bagdhad,.A British force of 11000 defeat a Turkish force of over 18000. Battle ends with a bayonet charge across open ground. Norfolks suffer 6 officers killed 27 men killed, 225 wounded and 2 missing.

However by the 24th the Brigade under the command of General Townshend suffering losses and sickness has to withdraw to Kut. The Norfolks form the rear guard as the Brigade withdraws. The 44 miles to Kut is covered in 36 hours. The 2nd Norfolks now comprise half their effective fighting force.

Abandoning the battlefield to the advancing Turks, it is perhaps not surprising that Richards final resting place is now unknown.

Dr. Charles Richard Drew Mural 2014 by Susan Schwerin

Dr. Drew can be seen on the left, rising out of the fog (symbolizing his neighborhood, Foggy Bottom, in DC where he was born). He is holding a test tube of blood that has been separated into its individual components: plasma (55%), platelets (1%) and red blood cells (44%). Next to him is a microscope with a microscopic view of each blood element in the background. The red blood cells are marked for the various blood types (A+,A-, B+,B-, O; however, in 1 drop of someone’s blood all of the red blood cells would be the same type, I have only mixed them here to exemplify that there are different types). Plasma, however, is not very different across people making it a better candidate for transfusions, plus it does not need to be refrigerated and lasts a long time.

Dr. Drew’s steps to “SUCCESS” are created by his education and training:

First he went to Stevens Elementary where he was received medals for swimming2 (“S” of success with silhouette of swimmer).

Next he went to Dunbar high school where he lettered in track (hurdles), football, baseball and basketball1(“U” of success with silhouette of hurdles, football, baseball, basketball).

Then he was off to Amherst college where he was captain of the track team and was the most valuable player on the baseball team, star halfback, national high hurdles champion5(“C” of success with silhouette of baseball, football and hurdles).

After graduating he started saving for medical school by teaching biology and chemistry and coaching football and basketball at Morgan State University in Baltimore1. During his two years at Morgan, his coaching transformed its mediocre sports teams into serious collegiate competitors1 (“C” of success with silhouette of an instructor and a coach, a football and a basketball).

He then went to McGill Medical School where he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) and a Master of Surgery (CM)2. He joined the Omega Psi Phi fraternity where he helped to pen their fraternity hymn, “Omega Dear”3. He was also inducted into the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha2. He won a neuroanatomy award2 and continued to excel competing in hurdles (“E” of success with silhouette of music notes, brain, hurdles).

He then went to work as a surgeon and teacher at Howard University, where they were trying to get and/or train their faculty to be competitive in their fields (“S” of success with silhouette of instructor and surgeon).

Dr. Drew got a Rockefeller Foundation research scholarship to get his doctorate at Columbia University where he wrote a thesis titled, ”Banked Blood”2 (“S” of success with silhouette of researcher at microscope and thesis).

World War II broke out. There is a world map at the bottom of the mural where the different countries are colored according to whether they were on the side of the Axis (blue-primarily Germany, Italy, Japan, and also Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Libya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, Irag, Finland) or the Allies (green: primarily United Kingdom, France, China, Soviet Union, United States and also Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Belgium, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, India, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Yugoslavia with light green being countries that joined the war late: United States, Mexico, many South American countries, Liberia, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Phillipines) or Neutral countries (gray-primarily Ireland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, and also Sahara, Angola, Mozambique, Yemen, Afghanistan, Tibet, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania).

After the war started, Dr. Drew was requested to organize the Red Cross Blood for Britain program (represented by the blood transfusion line spelling out Blood Bank, which then enters the top of the Red Cross symbol in the middle of the mural), where his attention to detail and doctorate research on blood banking enabled him to effectively collect blood, separate out the plasma and ship it to wounded British soldiers (represented by the yellow plasma transfusion line leaving the Red Cross symbol and going to the soldiers in the bottom right of the mural). The plasma transfusion line makes the shape of an EKG heart beat signal before getting to the soldiers, showing that it is giving life (giving heart beats). Beneath the soldiers is an open box with open cans, this is the box they received from the Red Cross with the dried plasma and distilled water which they combined to reconstitute the plasma to give to the soldier on the battlefield. Behind the soldiers is the British Flag. After the US joined the war, Dr. Drew led the National Blood Donor Service as well (represented by the American Flag on the far right of the mural).

In order to meet the huge demand for plasma, Drew initiated the use of "bloodmobiles" - trucks equipped with refrigerators6.

Unfortunately, the irony of his work was that the Red Cross would only accept blood from white donors. (This is shown in the mural by the 5 hands at the top. The center hand is Caucasian and is the only hand, whose blood drop has a Red Cross symbol on it, even though all the blood drops look the same, no matter what color hand is holding it). Dr. Drew publicly stated that the blood from different races was no different; however the Red Cross continued to exclude black donors. They eventually began allowing black donors, but kept the blood segregated for the recipients.

The NAACP gave Dr. Drew the Springarn award for "the highest and noblest achievement" by an African-American "during the preceding year or years” for his blood banking accomplishments2 (The medal and ribbon are at the top of the mural, just under the hands). This award bolstered Dr. Drew into becoming more of an advocate for black rights4.

Dr. Drew had a personal commitment to excellence as well as an expectation of excellence of his black medical students who frequently scored among the highest in nationwide medical exams (represented by the word “EXCELLENCE” in the mural). Dr. Drew continued to teach at Howard University where he was known by his students as ‘Big Red’ because of the color of his face when he was upset4 (represented in the mural by the Howard University Bison Logo with the words “Big Red”).

Dr. Drew died in a car accident in 1950 at the age of 45 (represented by the car in the upper right hand corner of the mural).

While attending a conference in April 1939, Drew met Minnie Lenore Robbins, a professor of home economics at Spelman College in Atlanta. They married in September of that year, and had three daughters and a son (represented on the mural by the house with the family inside, just under the Red Cross).

Dr. Drew’s one leisure activity was gardening, especially Canna Lily flowers4, which are featured at the base of the mural under SUCCESS.

The hand in the upper left corner of the mural that is punching through the wall is a representation of this quote by Dr. Drew and symbolizes how his accomplishments (the blood bank) knocked a hole out of the wall:

“Whenever, however, one breaks out of this rather high-walled prison of the "Negro problem" by virtue of some worthwhile contribution, not only is he himself allowed more freedom, but part of the wall crumbles. And so it should be the aim of every student in science to knock down at least one or two bricks of that wall by virtue of his own accomplishment.”

Donut has been quietly observing the goings on of the past fortnight and says he just can't believe all the attention Miss Minnie has been getting...and he hasn't. Tonight he spent the evening outside and, on his way back to his condo, stopped for serious cuddles and head pets, sufficient to make him tooth purr.

About as bright as it gets, and it's not like this for long

Lisel + Co. Every day skirt, size small, in Kaufman chambray.

My first adult sized garment ever! I wasn't sure about how flattering the gathers would be but I think it looks quite nice actually.

I've learned to definitely not ask my husband to help me photograph in the future. I got to choose between having no head, or having the skirt cut off. Oh well, as my three year old says: " you get what you get and you don't get upset"

This is probably the second most important motion picture camera in the history of cinema. (The Mitchell BNC being the first.) The Arriflex 2C was (and still is) the premiere workhorse camera. It is used primarily for scenes where sound is added later. It was used for hand-held photography, or (as seen here) it could be placed on a tripod and capture action, either up close, or shooting with a long lens to get action in the distance.

The Arriflex camera first came into existence in the 1920s in Germany. It was not only the first reflex viewing motion picture camera, but it also enabled the operator to have 100 percent of the light hitting the film through the lens. This was because a mirror shutter was used. In a unique form of engineering, the shutter was placed at a 45 degree angle that allowed the light to go through the lens, reflecting off the shutter, going through a prism so the operator could see the image. When the shutter closed the film plane the operator could see the image via the mirror. When the shutter opened, it allowed the light to hit the film. This is why the operator would see a flickering effect when looking through the viewfinder. Once the operator got used to that it became a pleasure to film action and see exactly what what would be seen on film, rather than view everything through a side finder. It was a prime example of precision German engineering.

Because of WWII, the Arriflex would not be available to filmmakers in the UK or America until after the war. And then it began to slowly change the dynamics of filmmaking. By the mid-1960s more filmmakers would not only use Arriflex cameras, they would also use zoom lenses, as they could now see what they were getting and could zoom and adjust the focus while still shooting.

Later on, Panavision would modify the front of the Arriflex so they could put their lenses on it, which had bigger rear elements to them, often for anamorphic photography. Normally, the Arriflex had a turret mount for three lenses, which would still be used, even in the event of using zoom lenses. (Stanley Kubrick owned a 2C, which kept the turret mount. He used it on every film he made that was shot in 35mm.)

Arriflex would eventually make studio cameras to run while shooting scenes with sound. (Including 65mm models.) They were also popular. Later still, Arriflex made digital video production cameras that are considered the best (the Alexa), more popular than even the RED or the Sony Venice cameras. It not only deserves a place with these other great cameras, it probably deserves a museum of its own.

he is AMAZINGLY perfect on the outside...but i've realized that most perfect person can have bad things happen....he never likes to have any relationships public...he wants to hide his relationships...believe me, i hide some stuff too....people need to see that he was worried about how serious the relationship was getting and how the friendship would be like....Demi wanted everything from him, she looked more into him than he did.....he's just human...there have been other guys in life where they break up with the girl because they were worried about how it was going to result as...all i'm trying to say is, Joe has affected my life completely. once i saw him on the "Hold On" video, i knew there was something special about him...i'll always be by his side, i'll never support any other band or celeb like Nick and Kevin, but i support Joe the most...

One of the latest series to hit the United Kingdom is the Blob Series. Shown up at the Entertainer and I managed to get all of them pretty soon. I calculated each visit which figures I was going to get, and today I managed to get the remaining four I needed. Quicksilver, Jean Grey, Juggernaut and Wolverine.

I can't believe how small Wolverine is in this series. He's very small compared to the Wolverine I have from the X-Men Classics line.

They came "blind-packed", which means that I didn't know which ones I was getting, and neither did the place I got them from.

They each come with a little keychain thingy, and a little plastic plinth, but I think I prefer them as they are.
