We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

I recently did a custom pony trade with ponyguru for their sweet American doll access to things I couldn’t get on my tiny island in the middle of the ocean ruled by a pile of ciggie butts. Well this is technically two packages split in half but i waited to photograph it together cuz I’ve been in an emotional slump.

But hey the bulk of the stuff turned up today after worrying needlessly over it so woo.

It started with a convo about how much I wanted Minty and I had so much leftover stock from PonyonAU, and PG is all like “i got a minty wanna buy it” and i’m all “hell naw let’s trade i need minty like air” and then PG got really indecisive so I offered to trade more ponies for more stuff she could get and blam this appeared.

I really wanted a Hunter to steal his body for Allan, and was willing to get Ashlynn too though i think Ashlynn needs a wash cuz the hair is ratty lol. I also wanted Raven’s body and outfit but not the head so PG kept that lol.

And heeeeeey Minty and Spike. I really wanna restyle her but been in a pony slump so I’m waiting to fully enjoy the Mintiness.

And wooooow PG added in so much stuff its so overwhelming.

Everything I have FST is in this pic some shirts will be hard to get and combats are most likely staying.

Me: What did you get and give each other?

Mom: Well, the first Christmas was one of the nicest Christmases Daddy and I ever had. We had no money, or very little money, and all the presents you see there were for family members, and Daddy and I allowed ten dollars for each of us to buy something for the other. Now you have to remember in those days rent was like $120.

Me: According to an inflation calculator on a government website, $10 in 1962 has has the same buying power as $72.24 does today.

Mom: We really put a lot of care into buying a whole bunch of things we both wanted. Maybe Daddy got me my favorite perfume. I just remember it being so special because both of us were trying to get the most for our money. It was one of the most thoughtful Christmases.

Waiting at the funeral home for people to show up, seeing how close the camera can get and hold focus.

..."Si la cosa funciona_"

..

..."Why would you want to hear my story? Do we know each other? Do we like each other? Let me tell you right off, ok... I'm not a like-able guy. Charm has never been a priority with me. And just so you know, this is not the feel good movie of the year. So if you're one of those idiots who needs to feel good, go get yourself a foot massage...

... What the hell does it all mean anyhow? Nothing. Zero. Zilch. Nothing comes to anything. And yet, there's no shortage of idiots to babble. Not me. I have a vision. I'm discussing you. Your friends. Your coworkers. Your newspapers. The TV. Everybody's happy to talk. Full of misinformation. Morality, science, religion, politics, sports, love, your portfolio, your children, health. Christ, if I have to eat nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day to live, I don't wanna live. I hate goddamn fruits and vegetables. And your omega 3's, and the treadmill, and the cardiogram, and the mammogram, and the pelvic sonogram, and oh my god the-the-the colonoscopy, and with it all the day still comes where they put you in a box, and its on to the next generation of idiots, who'll also tell you all about life and define for you what's appropriate. My father committed suicide because the morning newspapers depressed him. And could you blame him? With the horror, and corruption, and ignorance, and poverty, and genocide, and AIDS, and global warming, and terrorism, and-and the family value morons, and the gun morons. "The horror," Kurtz said at the end of Heart of Darkness, "the horror." Lucky Kurtz didn't have the Times delivered in the jungle. Ugh... then he'd see some horror. But what do you do? You read about some massacre in Darfur or some school bus gets blown up, and you go "Oh my God, the horror," and then you turn the page and finish your eggs from the free range chickens. Because what can you do. It's overwhelming! I tried to commit suicide myself. Obviously, it didn't work out. But why do you even want to hear about all this? Christ, you got your own problems. I'm sure your all obsessed with any number of sad little hopes and dreams. Your predictably unsatisfying love lives, your failed business ventures. "Oh, if only I'd bought that stock! If only I-if only I purchased THAT house years ago! If only I'd made a move on THAT woman." If this, if that. You know what? Gimmie a break with your could have's and should have's. Like my mother used to say, "If my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a trolley car." My mother didn't have wheels. She had varicose veins. Still, the woman gave birth to a brilliant mind. I was considered for a Nobel Prize in physics... I didn't get it. But, you know, its all politics. It's like every other phony honor. Incidentally, don't think I'm-I'm bitter because of some personal setback. By the standards of a mindless, barbaric civilization, I've been pretty lucky...

...That's why I can't say enough times, whatever love you can get and give, whatever happiness you can filch or provide, every temporary measure of grace, whatever works."

...

I've only recently noticed how uncommon these saloons are starting to get, and that's only going to get progressively worse. I guess the annual road tax of £270 is going to kill a lot off earlier than it should too.

This photo is about as Americana as it can get. And yet I don't feel the sense of security that Americana once conveyed to me. Now I feel more attuned to what our forefathers may have experienced.

This is the topic of my latest post for July 4, 2006 at www.gemfireair.com entitled "What Price Freedom?"

Quote below shared by pixability.

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety" - Benjamin Franklin

Added 7/7/06

What I saw as I chose this photo for July 4th, 2006, is that there is a subtle sense of insecurity in its content, despite the perfection symbolized by the traditional 3 patriotic American colors, red, white, and blue.

First the blue is a different hue . . . softer, faded. The red door, in the shade, is in the dark. The white picket fence, a perfect symbol for safe and cozy; but here it seems to be placed to keep something out . . . and it is very close to the door . . . you must walk around it to gain access to the door.

All is not what it seems here, and this can signify the underlying theme of unease in America today with constitutional rights being stripped, all in the name of safety.

What I also see is that there is light coming from the right side of the photo . . . it even lights the flowerpot on the ground, and the leaves of the tree, both on the left side . . . organic growth . . . the left signifying the feminine side of wisdom, the intuitive and instinctual Self.

The lock in the door is significantly illuminated . . . stating that it shows that the way forward is "here", and it only awaits the key to unlock the darkness.

St Andrew, Sapiston, Suffolk

This lonely church sits not half a mile from its neighbouring church of All Saints, Honington, although you will have to go rather a long way round if you are not on foot and able to take advantage of the footbridge over the River Blackbourne. St Andrew is set in rolling meadows, with the fields of the Euston estate beyond. It is not entirely alone, for nearby company consists of a huge farmhouse and a restored barn.

I have a very vivid memory of visiting this church in the early weeks of the new Millennium. At the time, I was doing a job I did not like, having been moved sideways by a manager whom I did not find it easy to work with. This made me depressed, and on a bright morning in early spring I got up and decided that I did not want to go to work.

Instead, I set off with my wife and our infant daughter into the countryside, and we ended up here. I remember sitting in the porch that day in the bright, low sunlight, listening to the small birds weaving around the graveyard. The sun warmed me, the birdsong lifted my heart, and I knew, if I had not known before, that there is more to life than getting and spending, and times would change, and the world would move on. And so it did.

St Andrew is an old building, and it looks its age. It was hardly touched by the enthusiasms of the late medieval period, and the 19th century restoration was early and light. It retains all the character of an intensely rural parish church. This is helped by the fact that it has been redundant for more than a quarter of a century, and the Churches Conservation Trust looks after it. They have cleared it of clutter and left it as an ancient space should be, peaceful and purposeful.

It's usually the chancel door that's left unlocked, but if you head straight there you will miss the great glory of Sapiston church, which is within the south porch, quite the best Norman doorway in Suffolk, elaborate and beautiful. The extent of the convoluted arches is accentuated by the smallness of the doorway. It takes the breath away. There is nothing like a Norman doorway for restoring ones sense of proportion. It has stood there for nearly 800 years, which kind of puts your own troubles into perspective, don't you think? The blocks are set together in pairs, each one reflecting the scoop of its partner. Those in the inner arch are slightly larger than those in the outer arch, and the illusion is of a peacock displaying its tail feathers. A medieval head looks down from above it. At either end is a mass dial, from the days before the 14th century porch was built.

You step in to a gorgeous, rustic little interior, narrow, crowded, rough and ready. There is a transparent coolness in the stone, intensified by the thick Norman walls. The stone blocks on the floor, the spaced benches, create a sense of a different time, outside the loss of nerve and limited imagination of the modern world. The walls are whitewashed, except for where wall paintings remain. There are several large consecration crosses, and above the alcove of a former tomb recess in the north wall, a wall painting can just about be discerned as showing the martyrdom of St Edmund as at Troston across the fields. Beside it, a perfect rood loft stairway entrance.

An interesting feature is the set of Royal Arms. It is that of the House of Hanover, but again as at Troston this is a reused Stuart set, this time the floriated lettering and hastily inserted 2 giving the game away if the crudely repainted fourth quarter doesn't.

PH Ditchburn, in his enchanting 1913 celebration The Parish Clerk, recalls an incident at Sapiston church in the middle years of the 19th Century. The Duke of Grafton, on whose estates surrounded the church, was passing it on a Sunday while a service was on. He entered the vestry, motioned to the parish clerk to come out, and presented a large hare for the parson's kitchen, asking the clerk to put it quietly into his trap and inform him of the Duke's compliments at the end of the service. But the clerk, knowing his master would be pleased at the little attention, could not refrain from delivering both hare and message at once before the whole congregation. At the close of the hymn before the sermon he marched into a prominent position holding up the gift, and shouted out "His Grace's compliments, and please sir, he's sent ye a hare."

Twenty years ago I wrote that Sapiston church is a place to come to if you want to feel serene and human again, and to have your heart lifted. I've been back here now half a dozen times I suppose, but visiting in the late spring of 2019 I still felt this. It is always salutary to recall less secure and comfortable times from the vantage point of happier days. There is a pleasure in knowing that you have survived them.

I wandered around the lonely graveyard. In the middle of the day the sky had clouded over in the heat, the boilings of cumulus clouds that had accompanied me from Bury St Edmunds merging and dropping to form a blanket that swept in from the northern horizon. It would rain later, but for this perfect moment under the low sky I was alone with the gravestones, some dating back into the 17th century, their skulls and cherubs and hour glasses a warning of mortality, but also a reminder of the preciousness of life, as precious for me as it was for these, now resting forever in the birdsong on the bank of the River Blackbourne.

It's time to expand on my product photography skills and what better to that with then a practice shoot on something I absolutely love. This is the Black Finger from Electro Harmonics. The pedal packs a lot of punch. You can stomp the crap out of your signal and get and unbelievable sustain. I've been using it for both my bass and guitar and it hasn't let me down. This pedal will put the rock back into your sound with long lushes sustain.

Thank you Adam for letting this pedal sit around in my closet for so long. I had no idea its power until recently and I almost don't want to give it back. Sad day when it is gone.

Cheers,

Aaron J. Trigg

Sound Storm was founded in 2002 in Turin, a city in the north west of Italy. The band started composing their own material, with the first three or four tracks finished by the end of 2003.

After two self-released titles ("The Storm is coming..." - Demo, 2005 - and "Northern Wilderness" - EP, 2007 -), in 2008 the band releases the debut album “Twilight Opera” which has got an incredible high quality production, strings section, a 9-pieces choir.

The album has been mastered at Finnvox Studios by Mika Jussila and released worldwide by Rising Records.

On August 30th Sound Storm celebrates the release of the album with a live show at "Ilha Do Ermal" festival, the biggest metal fest in Portugal, with bands such as Blind Guardian, Angra, Sepultura, Korpiklaani, Firewind and many more.

In summer 2010 Sound Storm toured Mexico for the first time: the band played 11 gigs across the country getting and incredible success and many hundreds people were attending each show.

In 2012 Sound Storm have signed a worldwide deal with Scarlet Records for the release of their new album 'Immortalia'.

Over the years the band has developed a very personal blend of Heavy Metal mixed with a theatrical sense of drama, which was internationally recognised with the release of their critically acclaimed debut 'Twilight Opera'.

This new chapter marks another important milestone for the band, mixing their wide range of influences in a piece of work perfectly balanced between powerful guitars, magnificent symphonic choirs, gothic atmospheres and baroque melodies, which is definitely worth listening to.

Recorded, mixed and mastered at Metal House Studio by Ettore Rigotti (Disarmonia Mundi), 'Immortalia' is a stunning concept album on the quest for eternal life, an amazing journey through literature, poetry and history, a collection of songs linked together by the common theme of the immortality of the soul. The evocative artwork was handled by Felipe Machado Franco (Blind Guardian, Rhapsody Of Fire). 'Immortalia' has been released August 28th, 2012.

Shortly after the band supported Norwegian Gothic Metal veterans Tristania on their European tour. At the end of 2012 Sound Storm also toured Italy with Epica and Haggard (in both case as main support).

The "Immortalia tour" goes on also in 2013, first in some headlining shows across Italy, then in some international festivals (Rommelrock in Belgium w/ Therion, Haggard, etc., Into the Limelight Fest in Holland w/ At Vance) and at the end of the year on tour over Europe again.

The "Rock Opera Unveiled" tour will take place in December featuring Therion, Arkona, Sound Storm and The Devil and it will hit the best stages all over Europe, including the "Eindhoven Metal Meeting" festival.

For my Hamster loving friends! I took 2 Teddy Bear Hamsters home today. These are boys. They are so hard to get, and I decided to see if I could try my skills in raising a few litters for my workplace. This one is Dr. Jekyll, he is a black eyed white. A beautiful little fluff butt and very friendly. They are about 7 weeks old.

Dave signed us up for an agricultural co-op. This is the first week's delivery. He's very pleased. (Though it's a little weird for pick-up. They get left behind bushes with a sign-up sheet to mark off what you're supposed to get and what you take.) He loves the idea of local and seasonal produce.

Swiss chard, arugula, spinach, broccoli, beets, fennel, carrots, oregano, sage, thyme, sunflower sprouts, kale, lettuce, and collard greens were in this delivery. He used the beet greens last night's dinner, and is currently cooking up the collard greens. I've had the sprouts on a sandwich and he's also had at least one salad.

These are all the parts (barring the three 2018 CITY Arctic sets I want to get and modify to be in the 2014 color scheme) I need to buy to finish the model series. As my Classic Space base's price is climbing way too high way too fast, (I don't have $250 dollars to drop on the CS embassy when it was 180 last week!!) I feel I'll have to switch gears back to this earlier model series while these prices are somewhat lower and the CITY Arctic sets are still in stock at the LEGO store.

Sometime when you leave in the morning before the sunrise and the clouds are heavy in the sky, you don't know what you're going to get, and you're wondering if your efforts are futile -- and then you are rewarded with color like this -- I love it when that happens :)

Hopefully the sky will stay clear until after sunrise and I'll be able to get sunspot photos today as well.

It's nice to be able to see the sky again. We haven't had many breaks in the clouds this winter in the Seattle area. Most mornings I wake up to thick fog and the days are very overcast.

It would be better to get this on a weekend but I'll take what I can get and be happy with it. I love rain and fog but I need the sun.

I didn't expect this image to work. It would be nice if it had a touch more sharpness on her other hand, but you take what you can get. And what I got shows the image on her camera - how lucky is that!

Palomar Pomerado's plans for a new hospital, and with the help of Cisco, a simulation. Lots of near-future goodies like robotic surgery, MRI scanning robots, Internet access from your bed...  Here's me having gall bladder surgery.  Painless! The tour is a bit rough, be sure to get and wear your ID bracelet and take the elevator from the lobby.  Wait for and follow the instructions.  It's hard to do a free form feeling tour, much easier if you put everyone in a "doom-buggy,"  but this was as good a try as I have seen.  The content was certainly professional.I'll be looking forward to see what is in store for the sim.  Currently it is a nice glimpse into the future, but I'd also like to see what can be done to help/educate people now.Knoh OhSL Healthcare Touristjohn-norris.net

The first photos from a very special, hard to get and almost unknown camera:

Olympus Auto electro-set (1958 - 1959)

1958

was the appearance year of the Olympus Auto electro-set

Olympus wrote in the manual:

This camera is the result of the gained experience.

That means, this camera is very special.

To me this is the very beginning of the Olympus 35 coupled exposure meter rangefinder cameras, but with many special details that no other Olympus rangefinder camera ever had again. Its incredible that this camera is so unknown even by Olympus fans.

In 1958 the Olympus Auto was then the only camera in the world with coupled exposure meter that when the shutter speed dial was rotated, the aperture was also changed to maintain the same light value, but when the aperture dial was rotated, only the aperture setting was changed.

At that time Olympus made history many times, and this one was the only with this kind of versatility.

Based on the ACE body an amazing camera was developed by engineers with no limits.

Again supplied with a fixed lens (E. Zuiko 1:1,8 f = 4,2 cm) the camera had got a coupled Selenium light meter with a hinged cover over the meter cell.

A buster-cell* could be connected for better measurements. The plug was on the front right under the meter cell.

The round ASA scale window was on the back, the ASA setting was done by pressing a lever and rotating the aperture ring.

For exact exposure, the shutter speed must preset and the aperture ring, according to the meter reading, turned.

Multi exposure* was possible by pushing a small lever at the back.

If the camera was loaded, the film transport could be watched in a small window* next to the viewfinder.

Rewind knob and camera back safety was placed at the base plate and luxuriously constructed.

The large viewfinder window with bright frame, combined with the coupled rangefinder with parallax compensation* for the best possible picture sharpness. A lever at the distance ring made focusing easier.

There was a special connection for fixing the carrying belt.

* The only Olympus rangefinder camera that had these features, and it was from 1958! Not even the 35 SP have them and the build quality of this camera.

Even with the rain i've been trying to get and take some shots.

It's been misty, foggy, rainy.......just miserable out there. But amongst all the dull and grey.......i happened across these tiny flowers glowing bright and looking happy.

It made me smile!!!

Sorry about the security fencing but this is as close as I could get and still be on public property. Also I don't think it would have been appreciated if I had stuck a camera through the security fencing to get a better shot when I was surrounded by aviation spirit.

173 yards worsted/bulky. Art yarn spun for the Wish theme in fiber friday on ravelry. This yarn is my interpretation of conversations among this group of friends. After several of us wishing we could all meet in real life, Tabitha said if she ever won the lottery she would fly all of us to Rotterdam. What a great wish if it ever comes true!

Since this is based on public wishes in the first place, I don't feel like the wish yarn is 'spoiled' by being public as well (as opposed to keeping a birthday wish a secret).

I've included as many 'traveled' add-ins I happened to have (that fit the yarn), including some beads from Cindy and cloth strips from Tracy and myself, which have a variety of origins. While there is a printed list of names with country flags (as ravelry does, and with made-up airplane seat numbers), I also added free clip art globes, to symbolize that the list is open-ended, as new friends join our group from anywhere in the world.

The batts are a blend of my hand-dyed indigo wools with natural white. I chose this first because I know Tabitha loves indigo, but these colors have evolved in their meaning to me as the sky, ocean and clouds we would all travel through to meet.

Lastly, I made these hand-stamped 'lotto balls,' where I stamped numbers in order from 1 to 34, (the contents of one package, symbolizing one lottery ticket; you get what you get :)). And finally, I'll be airmailing this yarn to her which will symbolize our actual flight if ladyluck chooses to grant this wish. :)) xo

WS-191-251281274-211227917-5203481-1072021212530

Met up with Blackcap1000 once again earlier today but beforehand, I decided to go down the river to see what we would be expecting to get and spotted this beautiful Migrant Hawker settled on a large bush from about 10ft away as I was walking down the path nearest to the river. I carefully approached and spent about two or three minutes taking shots before she moved on.

Didn't see her when I was with Blackcap1000, but with her being quite a newly-emerged specimen, it's likely that I'll see her again within the next few weeks, if she stays in the same area :-)

Help needed. Now I had to screw this out to get the gear box air flow working so that tells me it is so that if you get and air leak it dose not empty the air tanks. Or is it supposed to reduce the air flow? There is now air coming from the little exhaust so I think the diagram is shabbered. Will I get a new one?

By: David Motley/City of Waukegan

In 1949, Waukegan cabbbie, Jack Young coined the phase, "Scoop the Loop," to describe the process of "scooping" (picking up) fares while travelling on Waukegan's network of downtown roads and "looping" back to only start the process all over again. This word combination would later rise to significance as the areas young adults used this phrase to recognize the process of seeing and being seen on the bridge, at Plaidland, and also at the many other landmarks, side nooks, and community crannies all during the glory years of the 1950's, 60's and 70's. Some of them cruised the streets of our community in souped-up cars, others in old jalopies, and even many more, in mom and dad's grocery getters and station wagons.

For the past 65 years, as this tradition has continued on in some form or fashion, under one name or another, organized or unplugged, this cultural phenomenon made a much-anticipated comeback to Waukegan over this past weekend. We are delighted to have had an opportunity to work with "Gerry" Gerald Cook of the Original Scoopers, elected officials, community leaders, generous sponsors, civic organizations, and more than 200 volunteers to help return this custom back to its original birthplace. For some of you that grew up in this era, regardless of what you call this classic car occurrence, it conjures up memories of old friends during the "golden age" of Americana, with hamburger joints, sock hops, drive-in movies and rock and roll. Fortunately for all of us, these magical memories were passed down to the younger generations through fun-filled stories of colorful antics, friendly wagers, and most importantly, through an event that we will refer to simply as Scoop.

There are so many talented people that loaned us their time and expertise over the past many months as we drove fast-forward towards this goal of returning this tradition. We want take this opportunity to thank the Scoop crew and give a shout out to Gerry Cook, Bob Pataky, Ron Celesnek, Dick Breen, Jorge Torres, Dave Marion, Josue Pasillas, Kristy Flores, Ryan Anthony Ambrose, Jay Stephen, Tracy Adams, Alan Nowakowski, Chris Szymanski, Aimee Emery Ortiz, Jen Moore, Pat Vukovich, Leanne Linsky, Robert Allen Kutzler, John Hicks Pearce, Colonel Jon Kretlow, and Wayne Motley for showing that it could be done and for climbing aboard for this adventure.

House of the Teutonic Order

The House of the Teutonic Order was as a Viennese commandry of the in 1198 in Acre founded Teutonic Order under Duke Leopold VI in the early years of the 13th Century built. The German Order was next to the Hospitallers and the Templars the third major order of knights of the Middle Ages. Duke Leopold gave him the large area between Stephansplatz, Churhausgasse, Singerstraße and blood alley (Blutgasse). Documentarily proven is the existence of the house from 1222. Here resided the Landkomtur (province commanders) of the Bailiwick of Austria, to which the commandries Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, Graz, Friesach and Groß-Sonntag (Krain) belonged. In the great fire of 1258 all the religious buildings except the church tower burned down. In the Middle Ages the complex of the German monastic house was limited to the area along the Singerstraße and Blutgasse. 1309 exchanged the Order part of the land that was needed for the extension of Stephen's cemetery against a neighboring area. The sprawling building had in its, the Stephansplatz adjacent part a large farm yard, which was surrounded by stables. Since 1526 the Head of the Order bore the title "Grand and German master (Hoch- und Deutschmeister)". The famous Viennese house regiment of the same name by the way in 1696 emerged from those Truppenkontigenten (contigent of troops) which the Order for the Turkish war had provided. After the first Turkish siege of Vienna, numerous residents of the suburbs whose houses had been burned were housed here. From 1667 the already dilapidated buildings were torn down with the exception of the church under the Landkomtur (province commander) Gottfried Freiherr von Lambert and provided by Carlo Canevale with three-storey new buildings. As plasterers Jacob Schlag and Simon Alio were mentioned. 1679/82 increased Canevale and Johann Bernhard Ceresola the complex.

Sala terrena. In the years 1720-1725 the German religious house under the Landkomtur Guidobald Starhemberg by Anton Erhard Martinelli was further extended and baroquised. In 1785 it received under Landkomtur Alois Graf Harrach by placing a fourth storey its present shape. In the 18th Century several fires caused major damages. Especially those of 1735 raged for three days, because the urban fighting personnel the entry was denied by the German Order of Knights. Among the prominent residents of the German religious house, which in the 18th and 19th century first also as a guest house of the Order served and then was largely rented, included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1781), Johannes Brahms (1863 - 1865) and the comedy writer Cornelius Hermann Paul von Ayrenhoff. At the beginning of the 19th Century on Stephansplatz the German Order Cellar (Deutschordenskeller) was opened. Was in its place in the second half of the 20th Century the Restaurant "Deutsches Haus". Since 1809 the German religious house is the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Until then, this one resided in Mergentheim (Baden-Württemberg). From 1864 the Landkomtur Eugen Graf von Haugwitz the church by the cathedral architect from Gran, Josef Lippert, partially had re-gothicised. At that time at the gable above the church windows the already damaged pinnacles and figures were removed. Only the Grand Master coat of arms was left. 1929 the community of the German Teutonic Knights was transformed into a purely religious order. It is one of the very few religious institutions whose top management is not located in Rome. First Grand Master living in Vienna was Archduke Anton Viktor (1804 - 1835).

Church - interior. The House of the Teutonic Order is now a sprawling complex of buildings, grouped around two courtyards. The façade at the Blutgasse is the oldest. Those at the Singerstraße stems from the 17th Century. It represents today the face side of the building. The structuring of the façade by high Baroque inonic giant pilasters followed around 1720. The ground floor is grooved. The two early-Baroque round-arched portals are framed with Tuscan pilasters. The simple façades of the courtyards are held in the style of the 17th Century. On the west side of the pentagonal courtyard on the ground floor walled arched arcades as well as glazed Pawlatschen (access galleries) from the 19th Century on the first floor can be seen. In the courts were various, in 1903 discovered grave plates placed. The ground floor rooms are vaulted, early Baroque lunette barrels and groin vaults prevailing. Among them is the Sala terrene, a with a flat dome vaulted central room which is decorated with illusionistic wall paintings of the late 18th Century. The wall and ceiling frescoes depict mythological scenes and figural ornaments. The hall was once opened to the garden through a portal, but this was later reworked into a window. The tract between Stephansplatz and Blutgasse encloses two two-aisled halls. While the cross vault of the first ones is resting on sturdy pillars is those of the other ones supported by Tuscan columns. In the partially with Rococo and Neoclassical stucco ceilings provided rooms of the first floor are located the library and archives of the Order with documents and books dating back to the 12th Century. Some beautifully crafted wood cabinets were personally manufactured by the Grand and Deutschmeister Archduke Eugen. In the treasure chamber on the second floor are in addition to religious insignias and paintings, inter alia, parts of the Kunstkammer (Art chamber) of the Grand Master Archduke Maximilian III of Austria from the time about 1600 exposed.

Church - Empore. Attention getter and center of the tract at the Singerstraße are the three tall lancet windows of the church of the Teutonic Order. The first chapel already in 1258 fell victim to a town fire. From 1326 it was replaced by Jörg von Schiffering by a new building yet today the core of the Church of the Teutonic Order forming. At that time this one was still but free on three sides. In 1375 it was dedicated to St. Elizabeth. Guidobald Starhemberg 1720/22 the Chapel had remodelled in the Baroque style and flanked at both longitudinal sides by newly built religious houses, by which the three stained glass windows became the central projection of the House of the Teutonic Order. Presumably Anton Erhard Martinelli also was involved in the planning. The quite gothical appearing church facade is a beautiful example of the baroque tinge of the time after the Gothic period of 18th Century, unique in Austria. In the neo-Gothic restoration of 1864/68 the Baroque dome of the narrow and high tower was replaced by a pointed Gothic helmet. After the church was severely damaged in 1945 by bomb hits, followed its restoration 1946/47. Its vaults possess Gothic stucco decorations. In the Baroque reconstruction in the corners eight galleries were built-in, which are accessible from the apartments situated behind. The Dutch polyptych (1520) comes from Mechelen, but was until 1864 in the St. Mary's Church of Danzig. The altarpiece was created in 1667 by Tobias Pock. In the four corners of the room Evangelists Statues by Johann Hutter (1864) replace the missing sculptures by Giovanni Giuliani from the year 1721. On the walls hang several grave slabs, including an epitaph of the scholar Johannes Cuspinian (1515) and the by Jacob Schletterer created grave monument of the Landkomtur Josef Philipp Graf Harrach. Most of the more than eighty coats of arms of German knights, covering the upper part of the walls were designed by Johann Andreas Frank 1722.

The PLC3 uses a hard-to-get and super expensive battery called PX21 for its light meter. This battery costs 9£ + shipping from the UK. To put that in perspective, I bought this camera AND the lens for 16£ + shipping on Ebay.

No way I'm going to pay 9£ for a metering battery.

Then, I found out here that a DIY solution exists, where you basically substitute 3 x LR44s, using some kind of an enclosure that would let the batteries access the two contacts. Since I didn't have the time or the materials to fashion myself such an enclosure, I whipped up a ghetto solution; I wrapped 3 x LR44s using electrical tape, and stuffed a wad of coiled up solder in between the gap.

It worked ;-) At least, long enough so that I could see that the meter is indeed fully functional (although I don't know about accuracy -- comparing with my K20D + Sigma 18-50mm @ 50mm, both cameras set to ISO100 and F2.8, it seems that the Praktica metered a step or two too high. But that might just be light getting in through the gaps in the body, as most of the light seal foam has corroded away (and what little gunk was left, I took out).

At some point, I will go to Radio Shack and look for parts to do a more proper job ;-)

Okay...I need a scanner to listen to NASA from now on. Because trying to have three cameras ready to shoot at the same time (trying to trip the shutter of one at T-10 for a long exposure) isn't very easy when all you have for a countdown is someone yelling out what someone else is telling them over the phone. I heard "30 seconds" and tried to make a last minute adjustment to one of my cameras. Then I see the engines start and by the time I got back to my 300mm, this was the first shot I could get.

And then I had a bit of good luck? No...

My wonderful Clipper Tripper canoe. I grew up in my Dad's yellow Cliper in BC. After 30 some long years of use, abuse, trips, adventures and memories, it's no longer plying the waves. I got this new one in Norway of all places - couldn't believe my luck when I found it for sale. I enjoy it every chance I get and my kids are now making their own great memories in their dad's yellow Clipper.

Some slight tone-mapping from Fhotoroom HDR (natural).

Our big farm house Le grand Soleil is located in La Forge (88530). As my family name is Smits (Blacksmith)..... that connects me in yet another way to 'La Forge''. Now trying to get and taste the Bordeaux wine Chateau La Forge, from Teyssier (Maltus).

Homemade Pizza.

Maybe I'm not making the perfect pizza yet, but considering the amazing flavours I'm getting and the freshness of the stuff I'm using, who cares.

Time and practice will help me and in the measnwhile it already tastes much better than stuff I could buy.
