I managed to get and snap some pics inside the Danmoore before it was demolished. The oldest section of the hotel contained a gay club in the late 1980's called The City. I took a lot of photos but have to figure out where I stored them! Does anyone remember this place?

I took these images from my recent beach trip to north myrtle beach. some problems i faced were not having a FX body and condensation. if you go down there keep your gear in correct temps. but these were some of the images i was able to get and like.

7DOS, Twists, Turns & Curls, Technique Tuesday

 

I shot this from as low-down as I could get and at an angle and then processed with a Lomo effect.

First episode of 25 Things with explanation of why the series was developed, and Joy Chen demonstrating the proper and improper ways to shake hands and greet your interviewer.

Just a build that I thought I would share. What do you guys think? No editing was done to this photo. School will be ending soon for me and I will be leaving on a vacation for over 2 months! I will be away from my lego collection, but I will still try to post new things that I get and such. So there may be less frequent photos. :(

House of the Teutonic Order

The House of the Teutonic Order was as a Viennese commandry of the in 1198 in Acre founded Teutonic Order under Duke Leopold VI in the early years of the 13th Century built. The German Order was next to the Hospitallers and the Templars the third major order of knights of the Middle Ages. Duke Leopold gave him the large area between Stephansplatz, Churhausgasse, Singerstraße and blood alley (Blutgasse). Documentarily proven is the existence of the house from 1222. Here resided the Landkomtur (province commanders) of the Bailiwick of Austria, to which the commandries Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, Graz, Friesach and Groß-Sonntag (Krain) belonged. In the great fire of 1258 all the religious buildings except the church tower burned down. In the Middle Ages the complex of the German monastic house was limited to the area along the Singerstraße and Blutgasse. 1309 exchanged the Order part of the land that was needed for the extension of Stephen's cemetery against a neighboring area. The sprawling building had in its, the Stephansplatz adjacent part a large farm yard, which was surrounded by stables. Since 1526 the Head of the Order bore the title "Grand and German master (Hoch- und Deutschmeister)". The famous Viennese house regiment of the same name by the way in 1696 emerged from those Truppenkontigenten (contigent of troops) which the Order for the Turkish war had provided. After the first Turkish siege of Vienna, numerous residents of the suburbs whose houses had been burned were housed here. From 1667 the already dilapidated buildings were torn down with the exception of the church under the Landkomtur (province commander) Gottfried Freiherr von Lambert and provided by Carlo Canevale with three-storey new buildings. As plasterers Jacob Schlag and Simon Alio were mentioned. 1679/82 increased Canevale and Johann Bernhard Ceresola the complex.

Sala terrena. In the years 1720-1725 the German religious house under the Landkomtur Guidobald Starhemberg by Anton Erhard Martinelli was further extended and baroquised. In 1785 it received under Landkomtur Alois Graf Harrach by placing a fourth storey its present shape. In the 18th Century several fires caused major damages. Especially those of 1735 raged for three days, because the urban fighting personnel the entry was denied by the German Order of Knights. Among the prominent residents of the German religious house, which in the 18th and 19th century first also as a guest house of the Order served and then was largely rented, included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1781), Johannes Brahms (1863 - 1865) and the comedy writer Cornelius Hermann Paul von Ayrenhoff. At the beginning of the 19th Century on Stephansplatz the German Order Cellar (Deutschordenskeller) was opened. Was in its place in the second half of the 20th Century the Restaurant "Deutsches Haus". Since 1809 the German religious house is the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Until then, this one resided in Mergentheim (Baden-Württemberg). From 1864 the Landkomtur Eugen Graf von Haugwitz the church by the cathedral architect from Gran, Josef Lippert, partially had re-gothicised. At that time at the gable above the church windows the already damaged pinnacles and figures were removed. Only the Grand Master coat of arms was left. 1929 the community of the German Teutonic Knights was transformed into a purely religious order. It is one of the very few religious institutions whose top management is not located in Rome. First Grand Master living in Vienna was Archduke Anton Viktor (1804 - 1835).

Church - interior. The House of the Teutonic Order is now a sprawling complex of buildings, grouped around two courtyards. The façade at the Blutgasse is the oldest. Those at the Singerstraße stems from the 17th Century. It represents today the face side of the building. The structuring of the façade by high Baroque inonic giant pilasters followed around 1720. The ground floor is grooved. The two early-Baroque round-arched portals are framed with Tuscan pilasters. The simple façades of the courtyards are held in the style of the 17th Century. On the west side of the pentagonal courtyard on the ground floor walled arched arcades as well as glazed Pawlatschen (access galleries) from the 19th Century on the first floor can be seen. In the courts were various, in 1903 discovered grave plates placed. The ground floor rooms are vaulted, early Baroque lunette barrels and groin vaults prevailing. Among them is the Sala terrene, a with a flat dome vaulted central room which is decorated with illusionistic wall paintings of the late 18th Century. The wall and ceiling frescoes depict mythological scenes and figural ornaments. The hall was once opened to the garden through a portal, but this was later reworked into a window. The tract between Stephansplatz and Blutgasse encloses two two-aisled halls. While the cross vault of the first ones is resting on sturdy pillars is those of the other ones supported by Tuscan columns. In the partially with Rococo and Neoclassical stucco ceilings provided rooms of the first floor are located the library and archives of the Order with documents and books dating back to the 12th Century. Some beautifully crafted wood cabinets were personally manufactured ​​by the Grand and Deutschmeister Archduke Eugen. In the treasure chamber on the second floor are in addition to religious insignias and paintings, inter alia, parts of the Kunstkammer (Art chamber) of the Grand Master Archduke Maximilian III of Austria from the time about 1600 exposed.

Church - Empore. Attention getter and center of the tract at the Singerstraße are the three tall lancet windows of the church of the Teutonic Order. In the neo-Gothic restoration of 1864/68 the Baroque dome of the narrow and high tower was replaced by a pointed Gothic helmet. After the church was severely damaged in 1945 by bomb hits, followed its restoration 1946/47. Its vaults possess Gothic stucco decorations. In the Baroque reconstruction in the corners eight galleries were built-in, which are accessible from the apartments situated behind. The Dutch polyptych (1520) comes from Mechelen, but was until 1864 in the St. Mary's Church of Danzig. The altarpiece was created in 1667 by Tobias Pock. In the four corners of the room Evangelists Statues by Johann Hutter (1864) replace the missing sculptures by Giovanni Giuliani from the year 1721. On the walls hang several grave slabs, including an epitaph of the scholar Johannes Cuspinian (1515) and the by Jacob Schletterer created grave monument of the Landkomtur Josef Philipp Graf Harrach. Most of the more than eighty coats of arms of German knights, covering the upper part of the walls were designed by Johann Andreas Frank 1722.

My parents and I lived in Vienna, Austria. On March 12, 1938 Nazi Germany occupied the independent Republic of Austria, claiming that the Austrians who were German-speaking people, were reunited with Germany. We did not object to the union of the two nations as such; but Germany was in the grip of a criminal government. My parents decided therefore to leave the country. We would have preferred to go to Britain or the United States, but that was impossible. One of the few places open to immigration at that time was Shanghai.

 

In December 1938 we went by train to Triest, and boarded the ship “Conte Rosso”, an Italian liner. In the first week of 1939 we arrived in Shanghai, China. I was just 15 years old; World War 2 was eight months away.

 

Shanghai was divided into 3 parts: 1) The International Settlement, run by Americans, British, French, Italians and Japanese; 2) The French Concession under sole French rule; and 3) The north-eastern suburb of Hongkew, which was under Japanese military occupation.

 

We lived in Hongkew; The Japanese ignored us and we ignored them. The border between Hongkew and the International Settlement was the Garden Bridge over the Soochow Creek. At one end of the bridge there was a Japanese sentry, at the other end, a Seaforth Highlander.

 

We begun to settle in comfortably when in September 1, 1939 the Second World War broke out. This war was fought in Europe and Africa and at sea. It had practically no effect in Shanghai.

 

The situation changed greatly when, on December 7, 1941 the Japanese made war on the Americans, British and Dutch. This war, fought in the Pacific, opened a new chapter in the history of Shanghai. As Japanese warships attacked U.S. and British warships in Shanghai, during the night, I actually heard the sound of guns. By next morning the Japanese had occupied the whole of Shanghai.

 

The Allied citizens were interned; as our German passports had expired we were “stateless”. The Japanese confined us to part of Hongkew. I lost a good job I had with an Aid Agency. Employment was very hard to get and the food supplies ran low.

 

There was no fighting in Shanghai for several years. Early in 1945 the American air force started to bomb selected targets in Shanghai. One day they hit a radio transmitter and several houses nearby collapsed. There were some Europeans killed. I helped to carry one of the corpses to a Red Cross camp. By then, the food situation was grim. I remember eating mouldy bread, made from maize flour and full of weevils. It is amazing what one can eat when there is no choice.

 

At that stage I was resigned to the prospect of not surviving the war. If I escaped starvation and the American bombing, there was always the chance that the Japanese military, knowing that they were losing the war, would lose all control and kill all Europeans.

 

When the United States dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities, the Emperor of Japan convinced the military to surrender. The war in the Pacific ended on August 15, 1945, more than three months after the European war ended. Soon after that, American and Chinese troops arrived in Shanghai, disarmed the Japanese soldiers and sent them back to Japan.

 

We could then have returned to Austria, but the country was damaged by the war and occupied by armies of Britain, America, France and Russia. It was possible for us to go to Australia, yet it took years to get the necessary visas. We arrived in Sydney, Australia in March 1949.

 

We thank God that we survived the War, we are sad that so many people died.

Bacon is not my thing, per se, at least insofar as, once you've had the AUTHENTIC product, it's difficult to return to the imposter.

 

By AUTHENTIC, I mean to refer to what some folks call "slab" bacon, which is smoked, and dried, so that the uncooked slab of bacon needs NO REFRIGERATION, and is often found hanging in the open in the grocer's meat section.

 

This product is what some call "streaky bacon," which is what the English call this type of American-produced bacon.

 

Now, remember... before refrigeration came along, the preservation of meats was done primarily by smoking, and curing — and THAT was a technique learnt from the Native Americans in the earliest days of American history, i.e., by the colonists at Jamestown, Plymouth, etc.

 

That is also why, when the first enduring “snap” of winter, i.e., COLD weather, came along, it was called “hog killing weather,” because the cool, even cold temperatures largely delayed (retarded), if not temporarily prevented, spoilage (as rancidness, referring to an oxidized, deteriorated state of fat), and deterioration (rotting) of the uncooked flesh. Lard would be rendered (changed in character) from fat, which is accomplished by heating it, most typically in a large cauldron suspended over an open fire, to melt it.

 

EVERY PART of the hog would be used, which how the phrase “everything but the squeal” originated. The fat, the jowl, the hock, the ham, the loin, the back strap, the trotters (feet), the ears, the liver, the heart, stomach, snout, skin, and even the intestines (chitlins, or chitterlings), were ALL used as some sort of food item.

 

Nowadays, the meat is processed wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am with numerous godforsaken chemicals, soaked in brine, injected with water and chemicals that make it soak up water (that's bordering on fraud, to pump water into meat, or use chemicals to cause it to absorb water to increase its weight), injected with preservatives, nitrates (often as celery powder), nitrites (agents that interact with the hemoglobin naturally present in pork (blood in the flesh) that cause it to have an unnaturally red, or pink appearance and which eventually become nitrosamines, known carcinogenic compounds causative of stomach, bladder, colorectal, and breast cancers, vacuum packed, thrown in a refrigerator, and rushed to market.

 

Just read the labels sometimes, and look up things like sodium erythorbate (an anti-oxidant, color fixative, cure accelerator and synthetic variation of ascorbic acid, aka vitamin C), sodium phosphate — used to help meat retain moisture, and prevent development of rancid odor from the fat (which is deteriorating, or else it wouldn't be added), HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) which is metabolized differently than sucrose (table sugar) and known to cause weight gain and Type II diabetes, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) which is an inorganic hydrophilic (attracts & retains water) emulsifier, and is even used in detergents, etc.

 

When cooked or broken down in the stomach, nitrites form nitrosamines (aka N-Nitroso Compound), which are known carcinogens, particularly among young children and pregnant women.

 

The USDA limits addition of nitrites (as sodium nitrite) in food to 200 parts per million. The thinking, or hope, is, that by adding ascorbic acid (aka sodium erythorbate, the synthetic form of vitamin C) to the processed food, it allegedly reduces formation of nitrosamines, though there is no conclusive scientific evidence proving it.

 

The addition of sodium nitrate is limited, whereas the addition of celery powder is unlimited, and is considered “organic.” Neither celery powder nor celery salt is regulated by the USDA, but chemically processed sodium nitrate is.

 

Nitrate residue on processed foods using “natural” sources of nitrates (such as celery powder), is often at least 10 times HIGHER than that found on traditionally cured products.‌

 

Essentially, it’s a bait-and-switch shell game — a culinary con game, and the consumer is the mark.

 

But to add insult to injury, today's hogs are NOT what they once were — the heritage breeds our grandparents may have raised, which are now endangered — ones prized and bred for their dark flavorful meat, and for fat. Today's factory farm-grown, factory-mass produced and processed, pork is lean, light-colored pink, grows rapidly, is slaughtered around at or just under 300 pounds weight, and has little-to-no resemblance of heritage swine.

 

There is NO craftsmanship, NO pride taken in producing a high-quality, pristine product. It’$ ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. Get all you can, any way you can, while you can.

 

Or, as my now-late father said, “‘Get all you can, can all you get, and sit on the rest’ is NOT a good rule of life.”

 

"Unappetizing" is NOT the word. It's just wretched. Purely wretched.

 

If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right the FIRST TIME, and there is NO SUBSTITUTE for AUTHENTIC slab smoked & dry cured bacon. Perfection CANNOT be rushed, and there are NO SHORTCUTS to quality.

 

The Old School method uses salt, to draw water OUT, sugar to sweeten and counterbalance the salt, and is hung in a smokehouse where it is exposed to smoke, smoke, smoke, smoke, smoke, and more smoke, to finish it. And in that process, it WILL lose water, some weight, and increase the intensity of flavor... the characteristic "bacon" flavor that is so highly desirable.

 

And allow me to say this, about that:

I cook using that type bacon, and there is UTTERLY NO COMPARISON WHATSOEVER. The aromatic fragrance of smoked bacon IMMEDIATELY wafts throughout the house, in whatever it's used to season. And the flavor... is inimitable.

 

Plus, I've noticed CONSISTENTLY with ANY "rapid cure" bacon that, there is, as it's cooked, a characteristic smell that emanates therefrom, which I can only describe as nauseating, and which borders on a putrid mixture of rotting carcass, and vomitus.

 

Not pleasant.

 

Authentic, dry cured, smoked bacon is NOT that way. It has an aromatic fragrance that, when first encountered, is relaxing, and delightfully soothing.

 

So no... I do NOT "hate" bacon, though I utterly loathe and detest the seemingly innumerable modern imposters.

 

I am ALL FOR THE AUTHENTIC, the GENUINE, the ORIGINAL.

This one was hard to shoot, and took a bit of patience to get. And you're probably thinking, how can that be, it looks straightforward. Well, my first composition from this point was to be just looking across Morrison Lake to a cottage on the other side, but the dull flat sky made the image boring, so I turned the camera until I found a shot I liked, and this was it. The trouble arose because I was standing on a less-than-stable dock, it was a matter of standing perfectly still until the motion stopped before pressing the shutter.

Sorry for the poor quality of these photos (these were the only ones I was able to get and I was too busy finishing the cake to take my own), but here's a simple vanilla cake with milk chocolate ganache and covered with white chocolate fondant that I made for my company's holiday party! The texture you see near the bottom of each tier is sanding sugar I attached with a little bit of sugar syrup. The snowflakes were obviously in honor of the season, and the swoosh logo between the snowflakes is part of my company's logo. Happy Holidays, everyone!

 

PS - This was my first double barrel/extended tier cake and I had a heck of a time getting the fondant on that tall bottom layer...would love to get any tips on how to do it better!

Had another full day at Fully Laced again. I was pretty tired through out the whole day but work was pretty chill. Since I was working with Zalo today, he had a photo idea for his car. He showed me a couple of photos at Twin Peaks he wanted to try and get and of course I went along with it. Ant and his girlfriend Annie stopped by the store as well and they wanted to tag along as well. After work we stopped by Zalo's to grab a few things and park my car there. I also got to see and take pictures of Zalo's dog, which was pretty cool. Headed out to Twin Peaks and met up with Ant and Annie there. Drove out to the spot but Mindy and Annie stayed in the car since it was really freezing. Probably out of all the times I went night shooting, this was the coldest night out of all.

 

Their was this pathway were you can walk up a hill but it getting harder since the cold weather and air kept kicking in. Any didn't bring a tripod but was taking photos of me taking pictures. We didn't stay to long since we decided to cut it early due to weather conditions. Went back to Ant's car and took some photos of San Francisco. Since we got hungry, we decided to eat at Chipotle at Westlake. I was pretty tired and didn't want to fall asleep while driving back home so I decided to take a small nap at Zalo's. After about 30 minuets or so, woke up and drove back home.

I got called into work yesterday as my ambulance service declared a 'major incident' due to the heavy snowfall across the Yorkshire area and the major disruption to traffic including our ambulances. So many vehicles getting stuck on roads, blocking them and many roads inpassable due to snow and ice meant that our ambulances could not get to the jobs they needed to. Lots of our stafff having to leave the ambulance and walk some distances with equipment to attend to the patients. Then sorting the logistics of getting the ptient to the ambulance and onward to hospital!

A number of 4x4 drivers stepped up across the area and assited our crews in getting and from people's houses. The ambulance service itself hired in some 4x4 vehicles to help staff get to work and home again. Plus sending out a call for off duty staff to come in if possible to help.

I was on my day off so I walked into work and worked through until 02.00am and work gave me a lift home!!

 

I work for Yorkshire Ambulance Service in and around the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

West Indian manatee or "sea cow", also known as American manatee

Manatees are not known to have stellar eyesight, especially at night. So, the Wiskers provide manatees with a sixth sense and allow them to move around in dimly light environments.

There is no denying that the manatee is a very unique mammal found in the water. Full grown they can weigh up to 1,200 pounds. They can also be up to 10 feet in length. Many people have the opinion that the manatee is very strangely put together. It seems out of proportion. For example it does have a large body but then very small eyes that are spaced far apart.

You will notice that the manatee has a prehensile which is the upper lip looking similar to the trunk of an elephant only shorter. This lip is extremely important to the manatee as they use it to get and consume food as well as for socializing and communicating with each other.

To help them digest all of those plants, they have a cecum. This is a type of digestive tract that leads to the large intestine. It is believed to be as large as that of a regular sized horse. The cecum is needed to help eliminate the bacteria that can be found in such food sources. Otherwise it can make any animal that consumes so much of it extremely ill.

While they manatee does have teeth, they don’t use them for eating. They have teeth that all look the same. That is they don’t have different types such as incisors or canine teeth like humans and other types of animals do. They usually only have 24 to 32 molars located in the back of the mouth, and can regrow them as they need to throughout their life span.

I heard on the radio a few months back, about places in Britain that sound like they should be elsewhere, I can't remember the examples given. But for me, Luddenham sounds as Norfolk as it is possible to get. And yet it is a parish and small village here in Kent.

 

Were it not for the sat nav, I don't think I would have found Luddenham, not without someone reading the map anyway. From Burham it was a half hour blast down the M2 to Faversham, then taking roads that got ever narrower, I left Faversham, drove though a wood, then out onto the Oare Marshes.

 

Out over the marshes down a narrow single-track lane, winding round the edge of fields to a large farm that was once a manor house, and beside it was St Mary.

 

What warmth there had been in the day was now long gone, and the wind had turned to the north east and increased. As I stood inside the half-empty church, I could hear the wind whistling round the tower outside.

 

Highlight for me here was a fine collection of Victorian tiles, including a design each for one of the gospel saints, and a wonderful stone coffin lid depicting a face with two hands holding it.

The familiar country scene of Norman church, medieval Court and sprawling farmyard - but the history of Luddenham is far from standard. Here we have a promontory of land which formerly provided wharves off the River Swale some way to the north. Indeed, the place name gets it origin from the Saxon `Lud` meaning a river. The church is now in the care of The Churches Conservation Trust and consists of nave, chancel and south tower. The latter dates from the early nineteenth century and replaced a tower which originally stood to the north of the nave. The west door is a rather weather-beaten twelfth century example. Following redundancy, the church lost most of its furnishings, so its vast spacious interior is something of a surprise to the visitor. There are some medieval tiles in the sanctuary, where graffiti on the glass records those who were probably too poor to have permanent memorials outside. At the back of the church is a fragment of thirteenth century coffin lid brought here from the ruined church at Stone, about a mile to the south west. Rather touchingly it has a heart clasped by two hands in its crisp carving. The church is usually open.

LIES the next parish north-westward from Ore, and was, in the reign of the Conqueror, called Cildresham, by which name it is described in the survey of Domesday.

 

IT is situated about a mile northward of the high London road from Judde-hill, the southern part of it reaching up to Bizing wood, part of which is within it. It lies very low and flat; the arable lands in it, which consist of about three hundred and ninety-six acres, and the upland, meadow, and pasture, of about two hundred acres, are very rich and fertile; near one half of it is marsh land, which reaches to the waters of the Swale, which are its northern boundary.

 

The church stands nearly in the middle of the upland part of it, and the parsonage-house, which has a mote round it, near half a mile southward of it, close to Bysing-wood. There is no village, and not more than ten houses in the parish, the unhealthiness of its situation occassions its being but very thinly inhabited, those who risk their lives in it seldom attaining any great age.

 

THERE ARE some parts of this parish which lie at some distance from the rest of it, several other parishes intervening: in Perry-field, almost opposite the 47th mile-stone on the high London road, but on the other or south side of it, there are twenty-two acres of land, and between Goodneston and Boughton under Blean, there are thirty-two acres of land belonging to this parish. There are many instances of the like in different parts of this county, and in this neighbourhood in particular there are several, for a part of the parish of Morton, near Sittingborne, lies within this parish of Luddenham, and entirely surrounded by it, several other parishes intervening between this part of Murston and the rest of it. Part of Preston parish lies near Davington-hill; Upleez farm, the property of lord Romney, which lies westward of Ore, is in Faversham parish; and part of Ospringe parish lies surrounded by the town of Faversham and its liberties.

 

MR. JACOB among his Plantæ a Favershamienses, has given a list of a number of scarce plants found by him in this parish, to which the reader is referred for an account of them.

 

THIS PLACE was part of the vast possessions of Odo, bishop of Baieux, under the general title of whose lands it is thus entered in the survey of Domesday:

 

Anssrid holds of the bishop of Baieux Cildresham. It was taxed at one suling. The arable land is three carucates. In demesne there is one carucate and an half. There are five servants, and two acres of meadow. There is wood, but it pays nothing.

 

Upon the bishop's disgrace, about four years afterwards, this estate came to the crown, among the rest of this possessions, whence it was granted by the king, among other lands, to Fulbert de Dover, for his assistance, in the defence of Dover castle. These lands were held of the king in capite by barony, the tenant being bound by his tenure to maintain a certain number of soldiers, from time to time, for the defence of the castle.

 

Of Fulbert de Dover and his heirs, this place was held, as one knight's fee, of the honour of Chilham, which they made the caput baroniæ, or chief seat of their barony.

 

THE MANOR OF LUDDENHAM came afterwards into the possession of a family who fixed their name on it. William de Luddenham, in the 13th year of king John's reign, held it as one knight's see, of the honor of Chilham, in manner as before mentioned. His heirs, in the next reign of Henry III. sold this manor to the Northwoods, one of whom, Sir Roger de Northwood, in the 41st year of that reign, procured licence to alter the tenure of his lands from gavelkind to that of knight's service, of which there is a recapitulation in the Book of Aid, and among them mention is made of ninety acres of marsh land, which lay partly in his manor of Luddenham, and partly in Iwase.

 

From the family of Northwood this manor passed into that of Frogenhall; John de Frogenhall, at the latter end of king Edward the IIId.'s reign, died possessed of it, with an appendage called Bishopsbush. After which it at length descended in the beginning of king Edward the IVth.'s reign to Thomas Frogenhall, who married Joane, daughter and heir of William de Apulderfield, and dying in 1576, being the 17th year of that reign, was buried with his wife in Faversham church; their daughter and sole heir Anne, carried this manor in marriage to Mr. Thomas Quadring, of London, and he in like manner leaving one sole daughter and heir Joane. she entitled her husband Richard Dryland, of Cooksditch, in Faversham, to the possession of it. He alenated the appendage of Bishopsbush above-mentioned, to Crispe, who passed it away to Mr. William Hayward, from which name it went in marriage to Mr. Thomas Southhouse, gent. who possessed it at the end of king Charles I.'s reign; but both the name and situation of the estate have been for some time so totally for gotten, that the most diligent enquiries cannot trace out either of them.

 

But the manor of Luddenham itself went with Katherine, the sole daughter and heir of Richard Dryland, in marriage to Reginald Norton, of Lees-court, in Sheldwich, from which name it passed by sale, in king James I.'s reign, to Francis Cripps, esq. who sold it to Kirton, from which name it passed, in king James II.'s reign, to John Briant, esq. whose heirs passed it away, in king George I.'s reign, to Mr. John Blaxland, and his heirs alienated it, about the year 1753, to Beversham Filmer, esq. of London, a younger son of Sir Robert Filmer, bart. of East Sutton, and of Lincoln's-inn, barrister-at-law. He died ununmarried, and full of years, in 1763, (fn. 1) having by his will given this manor, among the rest of his lands in this county and elsewhere, to his eldest nephew, Sir John Filmer, bart. of East Sutton, who died s. p. in 1797, and by will devised this estate to his next brother, Sir Bevertham Filmer, bart. the present owner of it. A court baron is held for his manor.

 

At the court held for the manor of Chilham, the tenant of this manor is constantly presented by the jury for default of service, as being held of it under the notion of one knight's fee, and he is always amerced at two shillings, the payment of which is never with-held by him.

 

HAM is a principal estate, adjoining to the marshes, at the eastern boundary of this parish, and partly in that part of Preston which is separated from the rest of it by Davington and Ospringe intervening, being within that appendage to the manor of Copton, called from hence Hamme marsh. This estate, for several generations, belonged to the family of Roper, lords Teynham, and was sold in 1766 by Henry Roper, lord Teynham, to Mr. William Chamberlain, of London, who sold it to Benjamin Hatley Foote, Esq. and his son George Talbot Hatley Foote, Esq. now owns it.

 

NASHES is an estate in this parish, which formerly belonged to the Coppingers; Ambrose Coppinger possessed it in the reign of queen Elizabeth, whence it passed to the Brewsters, who were owners of much land at Linsted, Tenham, and other parts of this neighbourhood; from them it was sold to Mr. James Tassell, of Linsted; after which it became the property of Dr. Dravid Jones, and afterwards of Mr. Anthony Ingles, gent. of Ashford, who in 1776 conveyed it be sale to Mr. James Tappenden, gent. of Faversham, the present owner of it, who is descended from those of this name, who were for several generations resident at Sittingborne, where several of them lie buried, and are said to be extracted from the Denne of Tappenden, in Smarden, and bear for their arms, Or, two lions passant, in chief, and one in base, rampant, azure.

 

Charities.

 

Thomas Streynsham, gent. of Faversham, was possessed of a farm of 16l. per annum in this parish, Out of the profits of which, by his will in 1585, he devised 3l. per annum for ever, to the use of the poor of that parish.

 

The poor constantly relieved are about twenty; casually twelve.

 

Luddenham is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Ospringe.

 

The church, which is dedicated to St. Mary, is a small building, consisting of one isle and one chancel, having a tower steeple on the north side of it, in which are three bells.

 

¶This church was formerly an appendage to the manor of Luddenham, and as such came into the possession of William de Luddenham before-men tioned, lord of it, who, as appears by the leiger-book of the abbey of Faversham, gave this church to the abbot and convent there, which he did by placing his knife on the altar in the church of their convent, and this with the consent of his daughter and heir Matilda, and of Gaysle his wife, in the presence of the convent, and many of the clergy and laity, which gift was confirmed afterwards by Sir William de Insula, who married his daughter; notwithstanding which, William de Insula their son, laid claim to it as part of his inheritance, and a suit was commenced in the beginning of king John's reign, by him, against the abbot and convent, to recover the possession of it, which seems to have been determined in his favor, and the religious were forced to be contented with the pension of 66s. 8d. to be paid to them yearly out of it. (fn. 2). This pension they continued to enjoy from it till the time of their dissolution, in the 30th year of Henry VIII. when it came, with the rest of their possessions, into the king's hands, who settled it, among other premises, in his 33d year, on his new-founded dean and chapter of Canterbury, who continue to receive it from the rector at this time.

 

The determination of the above-mentioned suit against the religious, did not put them out of hopes of, some time or other, recovering the possession of this church, the appropriation of which they got to be inserted in a confirmation of some of their possessions by pope Gregory X. in 1274; but this did not avail them any thing, for this church still continued unappropriated, as it does at this time, being esteemed a rectory, the patronage of which has been for a great length of time in the crown.

 

The church of Luddenham is valued in the king's books at 12l. 8s. 4d. and the yearly tenths at 1l. 4s. 10d. In 1578, here were communicants fifty-four. The crown patron.

 

In 1640 there were communicants sixty-eight. The yearly value of it one hundred pounds. It is now esteemed of the same clear yearly value.

 

There is a modusclaimed for five hundred and thirtyone acres of the marsh lands in this parish, almost all of which are at two-pence, though there are some few at four-pence per acre.

Clocking in at just over 1100 pieces, I think this may be the first steam locomotive I'm actually happy with. The design is based off a New York, New Haven, & Hartford class J1 Mikado. All dimensions match to within a half stud. The locomotive is about 40 studs, the tender another 26 for a total of 66 studs, magnet-to-magnet. The locomotive is about 10.5 studs from the rail top, real dimension is 10.3. I really can't complain about that.

 

In the "painted" scheme, I don't think all the parts exist in the colors I have used, but it still looks good. I didn't plan for the red/green split in the boiler to line up - in fact at first it didn't match at all until I realized the boiler itself was too low.

 

The locomotive itself is powered by an XL motor in the cab, which powers the geartrain 1:1 - meaning it'll either be a powerhouse or I wont be able to keep it on the rails. I'm hoping for the first option. All PF control components and battery are in the tender. I designed it with a PFx speaker and receiver in mind - both fit, but it's quite a squeeze. If I can't fit both in due to wires, I plan on forgoing the speaker.

The battery box is hidden underneath a load of wood for the boiler (Santa needs all the coal he can get) and features a removable center to access the on/off switch and charger port. The tender also rides on BMR trucks.

This camera is the result of the gained experience.

That means, this camera is very special.

 

To me this is the very beginning of the Olympus 35 coupled exposure meter rangefinder cameras, but with many special details that no other Olympus rangefinder camera ever had again. Its incredible that this camera is so unknown even by Olympus fans.

 

In 1958 the Olympus Auto was then the only camera in the world with coupled exposure meter that when the shutter speed dial was rotated, the aperture was also changed to maintain the same light value, but when the aperture dial was rotated, only the aperture setting was changed.

At that time Olympus made history many times, and this one was the only with this kind of versatility.

 

Based on the ACE body an amazing camera was developed by engineers with no limits.

Again supplied with a fixed lens (E. Zuiko 1:1,8 f = 4,2 cm) the camera had got a coupled Selenium light meter with a hinged cover over the meter cell.

A buster-cell* could be connected for better measurements. The plug was on the front right under the meter cell.

 

The round ASA scale window was on the back, the ASA setting was done by pressing a lever and rotating the aperture ring.

 

For exact exposure, the shutter speed must preset and the aperture ring, according to the meter reading, turned.

Multi exposure* was possible by pushing a small lever at the back.

If the camera was loaded, the film transport could be watched in a small window* next to the viewfinder.

Rewind knob and camera back safety was placed at the base plate and luxuriously constructed.

The large viewfinder window with bright frame, combined with the coupled rangefinder with parallax compensation* for the best possible picture sharpness. A lever at the distance ring made focusing easier.

There was a special connection for fixing the carrying belt.

 

* The only Olympus rangefinder camera that had these features, and it was from 1958! Not even the 35 SP have them and the build quality of this camera.

5/13/13 - We were able to take Kaylee outside for today's visit, which was awesome. We spread a blanket out in the shade (next to a vacant office building - you take what you can get) and got some quality cuddle time in. While we were gone the staff set up a "buffet" for her in Exam 2, where I tried to coax her into eating. I got her to lick the tongue depressor a few times, but mostly I had to trick her into eating by plastering baby food to the roof of her mouth. She was pretty annoyed with me by the time we left.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

 

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. Elegant first generation Buick Skylark Convertible as modelled by Matchbox and now on its third version. Its a shame cost cutting means no rear detailing as it could really do with some but that luxury has been sacrificed for front and side tampo.

Still, its one beautifully executed budget toy car which thankfully gets, and keeps, plenty of chrome.

One of a few found recently in various French Action stores as part of 2023 Case G.

Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 500mm f/4L IS, Canon Extender 1.4x III. Taken along the Madison River in Yellowstone.

 

My experience at Yellowstone taught me that to nail birds in action, you need as much shutter speed as you can get and you need a stable platform. This was shot at 1/400 second and it was not nearly enough (despite having good light and shooting wide open and at 1600 ISO). A gimbal head and stable tripod are critical when using big lenses like a 500mm f/4. Getting closer to the action can result in greater detail, but it becomes increasingly more difficult to track the animals in the very narrow field of view. I did not nail this entire sequence because the bird was moving so quickly and my camera lost target acquisition multiple times, despite have a large zone AF system.

I guess that's okay.

Saint Mary Lake, located on the eastern side of Glacier National Park, is the second largest lake in Glacier National Park. The valley in which it occurs was formed via erosion by mountain glaciers during the last Ice Age. The U-shaped valley cross section is typical of such erosion. The island is known as Wild Goose Island. The continental divide is visible just above Wild Goose Island.

 

The Going-to-the-Sun Road crosses the Park generally east-west. It parallels the lake in its course up, and over, the continental divide. The road is visible just to the right of the lake in the photograph.

 

Getting good photos of Saint Mary Lake has been challenging for me. I've been there several times, but often the region was clouded over, and not conducive to good photography. The last time Mary and I were there, in October, several years ago, a blizzard was raging in the high country. Traveling to the high country was not possible because the Park Service had shut down the Going-to-the-Sun Road. We lodged at the eastern portal of the Park, east of Saint Mary Lake, but even that area was experiencing near-hurricane-force winds, and heavy driving snow. Actually, it was beautiful, and Mary and I loved it.

 

From there, we headed north into Canada, on our way to Alaska to visit one of my former graduate students. Unfortunately, we got only as far north as Jasper, Canada, when we got hit by a blizzard and to retreat south.

 

Re photography, we take what we can get. I took this photo on a cloudy, late afternoon, when shadows were long, during the autumn of 1958. It's the best I've been able do of Saint Mary Lake so far. But hey, we count our blessings for what we can get, and move on.

House of the Teutonic Order

The House of the Teutonic Order was as a Viennese commandry of the in 1198 in Acre founded Teutonic Order under Duke Leopold VI in the early years of the 13th Century built. The German Order was next to the Hospitallers and the Templars the third major order of knights of the Middle Ages. Duke Leopold gave him the large area between Stephansplatz, Churhausgasse, Singerstraße and blood alley (Blutgasse). Documentarily proven is the existence of the house from 1222. Here resided the Landkomtur (province commanders) of the Bailiwick of Austria, to which the commandries Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, Graz, Friesach and Groß-Sonntag (Krain) belonged. In the great fire of 1258 all the religious buildings except the church tower burned down. In the Middle Ages the complex of the German monastic house was limited to the area along the Singerstraße and Blutgasse. 1309 exchanged the Order part of the land that was needed for the extension of Stephen's cemetery against a neighboring area. The sprawling building had in its, the Stephansplatz adjacent part a large farm yard, which was surrounded by stables. Since 1526 the Head of the Order bore the title "Grand and German master (Hoch- und Deutschmeister)". The famous Viennese house regiment of the same name by the way in 1696 emerged from those Truppenkontigenten (contigent of troops) which the Order for the Turkish war had provided. After the first Turkish siege of Vienna, numerous residents of the suburbs whose houses had been burned were housed here. From 1667 the already dilapidated buildings were torn down with the exception of the church under the Landkomtur (province commander) Gottfried Freiherr von Lambert and provided by Carlo Canevale with three-storey new buildings. As plasterers Jacob Schlag and Simon Alio were mentioned. 1679/82 increased Canevale and Johann Bernhard Ceresola the complex.

Sala terrena. In the years 1720-1725 the German religious house under the Landkomtur Guidobald Starhemberg by Anton Erhard Martinelli was further extended and baroquised. In 1785 it received under Landkomtur Alois Graf Harrach by placing a fourth storey its present shape. In the 18th Century several fires caused major damages. Especially those of 1735 raged for three days, because the urban fighting personnel the entry was denied by the German Order of Knights. Among the prominent residents of the German religious house, which in the 18th and 19th century first also as a guest house of the Order served and then was largely rented, included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1781), Johannes Brahms (1863 - 1865) and the comedy writer Cornelius Hermann Paul von Ayrenhoff. At the beginning of the 19th Century on Stephansplatz the German Order Cellar (Deutschordenskeller) was opened. Was in its place in the second half of the 20th Century the Restaurant "Deutsches Haus". Since 1809 the German religious house is the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Until then, this one resided in Mergentheim (Baden-Württemberg). From 1864 the Landkomtur Eugen Graf von Haugwitz the church by the cathedral architect from Gran, Josef Lippert, partially had re-gothicised. At that time at the gable above the church windows the already damaged pinnacles and figures were removed. Only the Grand Master coat of arms was left. 1929 the community of the German Teutonic Knights was transformed into a purely religious order. It is one of the very few religious institutions whose top management is not located in Rome. First Grand Master living in Vienna was Archduke Anton Viktor (1804 - 1835).

Church - interior. The House of the Teutonic Order is now a sprawling complex of buildings, grouped around two courtyards. The façade at the Blutgasse is the oldest. Those at the Singerstraße stems from the 17th Century. It represents today the face side of the building. The structuring of the façade by high Baroque inonic giant pilasters followed around 1720. The ground floor is grooved. The two early-Baroque round-arched portals are framed with Tuscan pilasters. The simple façades of the courtyards are held in the style of the 17th Century. On the west side of the pentagonal courtyard on the ground floor walled arched arcades as well as glazed Pawlatschen (access galleries) from the 19th Century on the first floor can be seen. In the courts were various, in 1903 discovered grave plates placed. The ground floor rooms are vaulted, early Baroque lunette barrels and groin vaults prevailing. Among them is the Sala terrene, a with a flat dome vaulted central room which is decorated with illusionistic wall paintings of the late 18th Century. The wall and ceiling frescoes depict mythological scenes and figural ornaments. The hall was once opened to the garden through a portal, but this was later reworked into a window. The tract between Stephansplatz and Blutgasse encloses two two-aisled halls. While the cross vault of the first ones is resting on sturdy pillars is those of the other ones supported by Tuscan columns. In the partially with Rococo and Neoclassical stucco ceilings provided rooms of the first floor are located the library and archives of the Order with documents and books dating back to the 12th Century. Some beautifully crafted wood cabinets were personally manufactured ​​by the Grand and Deutschmeister Archduke Eugen. In the treasure chamber on the second floor are in addition to religious insignias and paintings, inter alia, parts of the Kunstkammer (Art chamber) of the Grand Master Archduke Maximilian III of Austria from the time about 1600 exposed.

Church - Empore. Attention getter and center of the tract at the Singerstraße are the three tall lancet windows of the church of the Teutonic Order. The first chapel already in 1258 fell victim to a town fire. From 1326 it was replaced by Jörg von Schiffering by a new building yet today the core of the Church of the Teutonic Order forming. At that time this one was still but free on three sides. In 1375 it was dedicated to St. Elizabeth. Guidobald Starhemberg 1720/22 the Chapel had remodelled in the Baroque style and flanked at both longitudinal sides by newly built religious houses, by which the three stained glass windows became the central projection of the House of the Teutonic Order. Presumably Anton Erhard Martinelli also was involved in the planning. The quite gothical appearing church facade is a beautiful example of the baroque tinge of the time after the Gothic period of 18th Century, unique in Austria. In the neo-Gothic restoration of 1864/68 the Baroque dome of the narrow and high tower was replaced by a pointed Gothic helmet. After the church was severely damaged in 1945 by bomb hits, followed its restoration 1946/47. Its vaults possess Gothic stucco decorations. In the Baroque reconstruction in the corners eight galleries were built-in, which are accessible from the apartments situated behind. The Dutch polyptych (1520) comes from Mechelen, but was until 1864 in the St. Mary's Church of Danzig. The altarpiece was created in 1667 by Tobias Pock. In the four corners of the room Evangelists Statues by Johann Hutter (1864) replace the missing sculptures by Giovanni Giuliani from the year 1721. On the walls hang several grave slabs, including an epitaph of the scholar Johannes Cuspinian (1515) and the by Jacob Schletterer created grave monument of the Landkomtur Josef Philipp Graf Harrach. Most of the more than eighty coats of arms of German knights, covering the upper part of the walls were designed by Johann Andreas Frank 1722.

Tommy Cooper. He's a comedian who was on TV years ago but he died and now he's on YouTube.

 

Tommy, like Dostoyevsky, had this amazing ability to know what'd be going on in the minds of his audience and he'd be able to toy with that knowledge to great effect. He did, indeed, therefore, know what was coming next.

 

In my life, thinking in the Smartphone Era, while surrounded by the past of the PC Era, I've been trying to adopt this mindset because it not only innoculates me against dated ways of being, but it also allows me to focus on key aspects of the present past as I frame the things I see around me in how I'm convinced they're heading.

 

I see many people self-consciously and deliberately displaying tablets, like the iPad, in and around the Office, my local branch of Caffe Nero. Sometimes they are desperate to be noticed with them, similar to some of the folk who make a show of reading what they think is an interesting book while affectedly wearing glasses they probably don't need.

 

Some of the characters appear quite tragic at times, but the important point is that they're almost stuck in their ways and can't see that there's a way out and that way out, to me, is through the future of the Smartphone Era and through social media.

 

But to get there, these people would need to go through some sort of paradigm shift - some revolutionary transformation in how they think. For now, though, I have to laugh sometimes, because when they hear that I'm from the future, waiting at the Office for the past they're living in to catch up with things like public spaces suited to the Smartphone Era, they're inclined to run from the possibilities of change and hide in the past by rejecting my mission in the many ways they occasionally try.

 

That can be a drag because it leads to a generally conservative and reactionary vibe that, while it's in keeping with a former market town like Kidderminster, prevents the place and its people from breaking out of their boring and depressing mindsets partly because its comfortable, partly because they know no different.

 

Maybe I should do something about it. Sometimes I try. However, that job here is so great, so seemingly impossible, that I might as well ship off my CV to CERN and start looking for another boson.

 

Instead, I sit and I wait. I chat and observe stuff. I try to see what's going on around me and record what life's like in this Era for someone from the future so that when other people make the leap into the Smartphone Era, they can build on these experiences so that the marketers don't continue to seize the initiative, where most of what you see and read about the smartphone is about the latest handsets and where most talk about social media is now to manage relationships, often with the intent to financially gain.

 

Because I now know that I'm a pioneer in doing what I do, I have to have the confidence sometimes and just laugh in the face of some of the criticism I get and the vibe I so often encounter. That's almost to be expected, but my experience of open-source living and the open-source community showed me that there's different ways of being, and I think they're better ways.

 

When I was in hospital for 6 months recently, I was largely offline. I felt incredibly closed-in and detached, something which had a significant effect on my psychological state. When I reconnected to the net, though, it was some experience to appreciate - to really appreciate - that there was a world outside the narrow confines a hospital unit and the ways of being and thinking such an institutional environment encouraged.

 

Sometimes it's not dissimilar in the goldfish bowl of a town I live in. Like I say, the vibe here can be detrimental to the mindset I need to enjoy life in the future, with so many bogus incentives to resign myself to its present past.

 

But that's a past that I think is going to die soon. I'm convinced that we're on the cusp of a radical shift in how we do things, how we live and how we think as we leave the PC Era behind.

 

And with that conviction, now I know that all I have to do when my mission seems pointless is to think of Tommy and laugh, because, unlike many of my contemporaries, I know what's coming next.

The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

 

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

When these 50th Anniversary Hot Wheels Zamacs first appeared here sometime earlier this year I eagerly snapped them up, one each, as Zamacs are normally something we dont get and they offered something new to collect over and above the usual Mainlines. I always felt they were overpriced for what you got though as per the U.K. norm and now it seems the pegs of various retailers are literally stuffed full of them! They seem quite happy for them to remain there for goodness knows how long without even bothering to reduce them in price to help shift stock!

Home Bargains seem to have gotten masses of them in recently, possibly from an overseas retailer, and have done the sensible thing and priced them at just 99p each which is probably their natural price!

I only picked up a couple of models even at this price one being this 1968 Oldsmobile 442. Its a casting I've always liked and a "generously" proportioned 60's behemoth with rounded curves and crisp front end styling I've always admired. Im waiting with baited breath as to what else Home Bargains might get in just before Christmas!

My first set of photos with my new Olympus OM-D E-M10.

 

Like all Olympus' high end Pen and OM-D cameras, the E-M10 is a complex little beast and it took quite a while to get the camera customised to my liking. But now I have, I am finding the E-M10 a joy to work with.

 

And the kit lens with the E-M10 is an unexpected pleasure to work with too. Good image qualty and impressive close focusing capabilities make this tiny lens a great option when you want to keep wieght and size to a minimum.

 

A lot of people seem to have bought into the idea that you can't do shallow depth of field photograph with four thirds camera. This idea is based on the quite correct idea that the smaller your sensor the more depth of field you get and therefore the less bokeh you get.

 

But if you have bought into the idea that this means you can't get plenty of bokeh with 4/3 sensors then you have forgotten a number of important things.

 

To begin with the

On a chilly evening, Korean beef stock soup, Seolleongtang (설렁탕), is a very good idea. I have left Greenwich Village and its Halloween parade to do some karaoke to wrap up the night (and my New York visit), and since I am in the vicinity of Koreatown, Seolleongtang is as perfect it gets.

 

And when it comes to that particular dish, there is no better place to eat it than Gahm Mi Oak, 43 West 32nd Street, which specializes in Seolleongtang and only sells soups. (At least unlimited steam rice and kimchi are included - and both are heavenly.)

 

Back in the 1990s, I remember paying $6.93 plus tax for a bowl. But this particular evening, I will be looking at more like $12.95. It is still a pretty good price.

 

The Koreatown in Manhattan is primarily made up of restaurants and karaoke bars, though there is a grocery store as well; more "living" Koreatowns (ones with grocery stores and megachurches) are found in Flushing, Queens and in Bergen County, New Jersey. In the US, the Korean population in Greater New York City is second only to that of Southern California, and New York City proper actually has more Koreans than Los Angeles. Ethnic Koreans in New York differ from those in California in that they are more likely to be from the industrial, conservative Gyeongsang provinces, as opposed to the agricultural, historically feudal, and currently left-leaning Jeolla provinces.
