Auburn’s School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences has launched a new degree in geospatial and environmental informatics, or GSEI. Natural Resources graduate student Enis Baltaci uses geospatial technology to combine digital maps of land use/cover and soils to identify runoff generating areas to help solve the local flooding issues near Mobile, Alabama.

Panorama of Geospatial Information Authority of Japan aerial images of landslides (the brownish-red streaks on the sides of the hills and ridges) in Atsuma-cho (Astuma Town) in Hokkaido, Japan, as a result of the earthquake on 6 September 2018 (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Hokkaido_Eastern_Iburi_earthquake for more information (in English).) Most of the so-far recorded 39 deaths from the earthquake occurred in this location. Color/processing variant.

The name of the earthquake, in English, is (so far as I can tell) "2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake" where "Eastern Iburi" is the eastern part of the Iburi district. In Japanese, the name is 平成30年北海道胆振東部地震 (according to the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan).

WALLOPS ISLAND, Va. – Jeff Swallow, with the Norfolk District’s geospatial section, receives a tour of the Great Lakes Dredging and Dock Company’s dredge, Liberty Island, from Howard Hawrey, the ship’s captain. The dredge is one of three vessels working to collect beach quality sand in the Atlantic Ocean and depositing it along the shore of NASA’s Wallops Island Flight Facility, May 7, 2012. The new beach will help protect more than $1 billion in federal government and Commonwealth of Virginia assets located here. The Wallops Island facility is home to, not only NASA, but also the US Navy Surface Combat Systems Center and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport making this a growing economic generator for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the region.
