You can see exactly where the old building ends and the modern preservation begins, and that line is drawn beautifully in this frame. Right in front of you is this heavy, layered wall of rough, red brick and crumbling grey mortar, broken open like a wound in the building’s side. The brickwork is jagged and uneven, showing you the raw, functional guts of the structure—the stuff that was never meant to be seen, just built to hold everything up.

But just to the left, you've got an entirely different story. A smooth, pale stone column with a beautifully carved, flared capital rises up to support an intact Romanesque archway. The arch still carries its original painted borders—that faded terracotta trim and the geometric, meandering patterns that run along the curve. It's delicate and intentional, a world away from the rough masonry sitting right next to it.

And if you look past the column, you can see deep into the adjoining room. There's warm track lighting, polished floors, and clean white walls. It’s a reminder that this isn't just a ruined shell; it's a preserved heritage space where the past and the present have been allowed to sit right next to each other, exposed and honest.

For instance, here was an idea for a two-story repetitive pattern of "selected bricks protrude," at an apartment building from 1954.

I have instructed the building's owner to repaint the wall using a multicolor pattern that incorporates the triangles, three colors minimum.
