A generous christmas gift which I'm still getting the hang of. If like me, you're a little flummoxed by "has a mind of its own" cameras, I've done some investigation:

+ the nominal 60mm focal length would equate to about 34mm f.l. on "full frame"/135 format

+ shutter speed is fixed (specs say 1/60th sec); Instax film ISO is 800

+ the only exposure control is several waterhouse stops of different f/numbers switched by the sunny/cloudy icon ring

+ the widest/brightest aperture is the one labeled "Hi-Key"; if this corresponds to the f/12.7 aperture stated in the specs, then the remaining apertures** are

[house icon] f/16

[cloud icon] f/22

[less sun icon] f/32

[more sun icon] f/41

+ The "sunny sixteen" rule for ISO 800 film and a 1/60th shutter speed would require closing the lens one additional stop from the [more sun icon], so avoid full sun

+ flash always fires—seems to have thyristor-type sensor eye to modulate output; but is still too "hot" at selfie distances unless you manually reset to the [cloud icon]

+ the included close-up lens seems to be a little less than +2 diopter but you can substitute your own (e.g. +1 will give good focus at about 25"; +3 at about 11")

** I determined the f/numbers by photographing the different waterhouse stops with a macro lens and measuring their diameters relative to the nominal f/12.7

Monument in the south transept of William II Canynges (d.1474). Canynges was five times Lord Mayor of Bristol and a generous patron of the church. Following his wife's death he renounced his civic life and was ordained a priest for the remaining six years of his life. His canopied tomb stands nearby but this second alabaster effigy of him in clerical robes was also commission and originally installed in his memory at the collegiate church at Westbury on Trym but later moved here (alongside his actual tomb) following the Dissolution.

So much has been said in praise of St Mary's church in the Redcliffe area of Bristol that it seems rather pointless trying to go into further detail here beyond saying that its repute is truly well deserved, this being the church that Elizabeth I called "the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England."

St Mary Redcliffe is a wonderfully complete vision of English late Decorated / early Perpendicular Gothic architecture which is broadly unified stylistically. The present building mainly dates from 1292-1370 and has a cathedral-like form and scale, fully cruciform with nave, choir and transepts flanked by aisles in each case and the church culminating in a Lady Chapel at the east end. The tower is at the north west corner and crowned by a tapering spire (truncated by a lightning strike in 1446 and only rebuilt in 1872) and a landmark for the surrounding area (visible as one arrives in Bristol by train as I did, being so close to the station). However the most dramatic architectural feature of the exterior is the unique two-storied hexagonal porch on the north side which is the main entrance to the church. This porch has much unusual ornament in its carved doorways and details and within is a joy to behold with its vaulted ceiling, a beautiful introduction to the church beyond.

Inside the nave the glory of the interior becomes clear, flooded with light from the many great aisle and clerestorey windows and crowned throughout by vaulted ceilings of a variety of beautiful designs, all studded with gilded roof bosses. It is a breathtaking interior to behold and a feast for the eyes. As one progresses further down the church through the aisles and transepts one encounters tombs and effigies to various medieval worthies of Bristol and whilst most of the medieval glass has disappeared beyond a few collected fragments (located in the chapel at the north west corner under the tower) there are some huge swathes of Victorian glass and some rather more rewarding postwar glass in the Lady Chapel adding a rich splash of colour at the far end of the building.

It is impossible to really do this architectural gem justice with words so I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking. All I can add is that this is one of the loveliest buildings in the country and a masterpiece of English medieval art and architecture. It shouldn't be missed and is happily normally open to visitors on a daily basis.

Generously hosted by Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency, Paul Rhodes of the eponymous artisan bakery and his head baker Yann Legallais kindly gave up their day to pass bread making skills on to thirteen would-be bakers from public sector kitchens. Tracey Simmons from Pabulum Catering then spoke about the practicalities of Real Bread in a public sector catering situation.

The generous fit of these makes it easy to fit over cloth diapers - something that's becoming more difficult to do with RTW clothing. Right now I turn up the legs so that he doesn't step on them. I think the elastic in the cuffs is supposed to keep that from happening, but I must have cut the elastic too long, because I frequently find him with the legs pushed all the way up above his knees.

The Expo is generously hosted by the State of Qatar and co-organized by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the United Nations Development Programme Regional Bureau for Arab States. The main objective of the Expo is to serve as a platform for matching capacities of the solution providers with the needs of the solution seekers, which will potentially lead to practical exchanges of South-South solutions and experiences in the region. It is an opportunity for countries in the Arab States region to share achievements and replicate successes in the context of the production, marketing and transfer of solutions in response to shared development challenges. The three thematic focus areas of the Expo are youth and women’s employment, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and water and food security.

Opened 30 Nov 1896, closed, now private.

“Mrs. Nock, of Port Adelaide, came forward with a generous offer to present a very suitable site at . . . Glanville, as a gift. Messrs. D. & J. Hollingworth, architect, promised to prepare the plans and to superintend the erection of the building without any charge.” [Register 26 Mar 1896]

“The dedication of St. Nicholas's Mission Church, Glanville, took place in the presence of a large congregation on Monday evening, the Bishop of Adelaide officiating. The building . . . has been erected in memory of the late Mr. Charles Trafford Smith, who died in February last. . . The structure is of iron, variations of weatherboard giving a pleasing effect. . . the Bishop . . . said St. Nicholas Mission Church completed the circle of mission churches which were to be the outposts and therefore the inner strength of the mother church (St Paul’s, Port).” [Advertiser 2 Dec 1896]

GLANVILLE BIBLE CHRISTIAN CHAPEL

Foundation stone 31 Aug 1878 by Chief Justice S J Way, architect Daniel Garlick, opened 6 Jan 1879, Methodist after Union 1900, Uniting 1977, closed, demolished 1984.

“the contract for the erection of a Bible Christian Chapel at Glanville has been let. . . The Rev. R. Kelly will reside at Glanville, and will open Divine Service in his own house, Carlisle-street, near the proposed hew chapel, on the last Sunday in the present month. Services will be held regularly every Sunday at the same place until the new chapel is completed.” [Express & Telegraph 4 Jul 1878]

“the Chief Justice . . . in addressing the assembly apologized for his late arrival. He had come down by the train in time, but Glanville had grown so large that in finding his destination he had wandered up and down wrong streets. (Laughter). Although he had so little local acquaintance, yet 25 years ago he had walked from the beach over that spot to the Port. At that time, he believed, the neighbourhood was covered with the honeysuckle tree, but at all events it presented a different appearance to what it did that day. [Evening Journal 2 Sep 1878]

“The site is in Carlisle-street south of Hart-street, from which thoroughfare the structure is visible as a prominent object. The edifice is built with Dry Creek stone with cement dressings; is Gothic in style, lofty in appearance, and withal neat. The dimensions are 45 by 35 feet. The interior furnishings are kauri and huon pine sittings for 200 persons. . . The land is sufficiently large for the erection of an adjoining school or lecture rooms, it being 51 x 127 feet. The building is surmounted by a bell turret, and lighted by deep narrow Gothic windows upon all sides.” [Christian Colonist 10 Jan 1879]

“The jubilee services of the Glanville Methodist Mission . . . invited Mrs. R. Thompson, who has been a member for over 46 years, to unveil the Memorial Window, provided for ‘Former Workers’, and Mr. A. H. Admore, as representing the returned soldiers present, to unveil one in honour of those men who enlisted at Duty's call and proceeded overseas in the cause of ‘Truth and Right’. These two windows are a very fine tribute to the glazier's art, and taken in conjunction with the new leadlights in place of the original windows greatly enhance the beauty of the church.” [Australian Christian Commonwealth 21 Sep 1828]

Historical Overview - History

Tympanum of a Romanesque portal, by 1225, left of the entrance area

The Church of St. Michael was built in 1220 and already in 1288 a parish church. It is located on one of the most beautiful places in Vienna and it is one of the oldest and most interesting churches in Vienna. Until 1784 it was listed as Hofpfarrkirche (Court Parish). Today it is the parish and monastery church of the Salvatorians.

Besides St. Stephen and the Scots church, St. Michael is named from 1288 as one of the three parish churches, to which belonged to Joseph's parish reform in 1782, inter alia, the districts Mariahilf, Fünfhaus, Sechshaus and Währing.

Romanesque beginnings

The origin of St. Michael's Church was long shrouded in darkness. A dated 1221 Memorandum, first published in 1772, was recognized by Oskar von Mitis as a forgery. Possibly it originated in the 18th Century in a dispute with the neighboring castle parish, to prove its priority. 1953, Alois Kieslinger after extensive investigations of building materials arrived to the conclusion that the uniform origin of the late-Romanesque St. Michael's Church is proved: all the stones of the friezes carry the same stonemason signs.

With this the St. Michael's Church has the only and largest preserved late Romanesque building stock in Vienna. The 1951 followed discovery of the richly structured arch of the west door and the 1982/83 carried out uncovering of the north portal in the transept and the "porta lateral" behind the former Allerseelenaltar (All Soul's alter) 1987/88 confirm the start of construction of the church around 1220. The three late Roman gates with two preserved tympana (Giebelfeld = tympanum above the lintel) are occasionally to visit with special tours. A 25 June 1288 issued letter of indulgence in favor of rebuilding the St. Michael's Church is the oldest document of the St. Michael's College Archives. An indulgence brings about the reduction of the temporal punishments for sin under certain conditions.

Gothic construction phases

On 23 March 1327 burned out Michael's Bell Tower, in the process three bells were melted. The Vienna citizenship and Duke Albrecht II (1330-1358) raised the funds for the restoration. 1350 provided the ducal chef cook Stiborius Chrezzel a generous donation for the construction of the southern Gothic side choir, the today's Chapel of the Cross, of gratitude, that he had been acquitted of the charges brought against him of attempted poisoning of his Lord Albrecht II. On 5 April 1416 consecrated Georg von Hohenlohe, Bishop of Passau, the church after the establishment of the Gothic main choir anew; a little later the northern side choir was built.

Baroque and Classicism

Until 1626 the assets of the church were administered by an urban church master. Emperor Ferdinand II deprived St. Michael of the influence of the Protestant-minded city council and handed the church and presbytery on 4 May 1626 over to the from Milan summoned Barnabites. By cardinal Melchior Khlesl on 16 May followed the transfer to the Barnabites, bringing new architectural ideas from the South and from 1633 to 1636 taking off a large part of the Gothic interior. One of the first changes was the demolition of the since 1419 certifiable rood screen (Lettner - Chorschranke) that separated the three Ostabschlüsse (closings to the east) of the church from the transept. Of the at the beginning of the 16th Century counted 21 altars, there were now only 12 left. The driving force of the Baroquisation was Father Don Florentius Schilling. He was a preacher in Rome and Naples, and in 1634 was sent to Vienna. Father Schilling became the most important preacher of Vienna. St. Michael owes him above all the transformation of the Pietà chapel (Vesperbildkapelle) to an early Baroque jewel.

1724/25 got the to St. Michael's Square oriented West facade a porch. The gable figures represent the Engelsturz (Fall of the Angels). 1781/82 the high altar was erected and thereby also the choir designed anew. After already in 1792 the western facade had been covered classicist, emerged inside the church for the Bicentennial (1826) of the Barnabites in Austria also altars in classicism.

On recent history

Paintings of Jude Thaddeus, venerated helper in dire need, circa 1928, of the Salvatorians commissioned. After nearly 300 years of service in Austria, the Barnabites handed over the management of their property in 1923 to the Salvatorians. The parish of St. Michael with effect from 1 January 1926 was closed, its parish establishment divided to the neighboring parishes of St. Augustine, St. Peter and the Scots. Under the first Salvatorian priest, the Provincial Father Theophilus Muth came back new life to St. Michael; several monuments in memory of the Habsburg Monarchy found here a homestead. By order of 30 January 1938, the parish of St. Michael by Cardinal Innitzer on 1 February 1939 was re-established. In 1976 it got alloted parts of the completely abandoned parish of St. Peter.

2003 the former Allerseelenaltar (All Saints altar) was transferred to the monastery by which one of the Romanesque church doors for the church visitor was made available. 2006 followed the restoration of the great bell of St. Michael's from 1525, which had cracked in 1992 and since then stood in front of the church. On 5 December 2006 the bell sounded with great participation of the population for the day of death of Mozart. The baroque clock tower from 1765 also could be renovated and made functional again. For the Easter 2007, the tower ratchet from 1901 was put into operation again.

Pretty cool happening I got to witness in the pits. Robert "Bootie" Barker III, paralyzed in a car accident in high school, is the crew chief for the No. 13 Germain Racing GEICO Ford Fusion driven by Casey Mears in the Sprint Cup Series. This young man got some time with him in the pits, some words of encouragement, and an autographed hat. He was really excited to say the least and his family standing next to me was extremely excited and in tears witnessing this generosity.

Around the pits aka the Neon Garage at NASCAR practice and time trial day on Friday, March 8, 2013 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Rain ended up delaying any actual racing but still some good photo opportunities. All of the photos were taken with either the Pentax DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 or the Pentax DA* 60-250mm f/4.

Among the generously decorated by nature winter trees you can see golden radiance of crosses on silver domes of The Church of the Twelve Apostles â the only Moscow church, consecrated in the name of this feast. Itâs situated in Kremlin and we usually have to go under its beautiful arches to get to Sobornaya Square, which completes the architectural ensemble of this Church and three major Kremlin cathedrals - Cathedral of the Dormition (Assumption), Cathedral of the Archangel, and Cathedral of the Annunciation. The Church was built in the middle of XVII century by order of Patriarch Nikon along with the gorgeous Patriarch's Palace and it was a personal domestic church of Russian patriarchs.

A romantic & generous prince presents his beloved Princess with a gift -- a beautiful key set with a light pink diamond. He takes her by the hand and leads her to a richly ornamented wall cabinet. With delight she realizes that there is more to the gift than just the key. She opens the padlock and sees shelves with a miniature crystal chandelier, a glass rose, a bottle of Enchanted elixir perfume, and a Russian doll.

She picks up the larger Russian doll and opens it, eager to find layers of progressively smaller dolls inside. Instead, inside there is a sparkling enchanted doll, decorated from head to toe in diamonds & precious gems. She beams at her prince, at a loss for words, to describe her gratitude for such a masterpiece.

The prince has one little surprise left -- inside the small Russian doll is a heart shaped diamond pendant set with a rare, natural Australian Argyle pink diamond with the coveted grade of 'Fancy Purplish Red'. (This little treasure weighs less than half a carat & is valued at over half a million dollars.)

The princess is absolutely thrilled by these extravagant gifts -- especially adoring the pendant and the stunning Enchanted doll.

Generosity week ran from February 24th to March 2nd 2014 at USF as a way for students to give thanks for the generosity of all the donors that contribute to the University of San Francisco.

The week started with a Generosity Food Truck Kickoff, a “Thank You” banner signing and a chance for students to meet the student philanthropy committee.

Could you imagine USF without any of these buildings or statues?

Lo Schiavo Science

75% of the cost of LCSI was funded by 3,407 donors. Gifts ranged in size from $2 to $10 million, from Alumni, Faculty, Staff, Parents, Friends, Foundation and Corporations.

Gleeson Library

The Richard H. Simons Rainforest was created in 2000 thanks to a generous grant from Mr. Robert M. Kramer, trustee of the Richard H. Simons Charitable Trust. Our rainforest showcases plant diversity and has a paved path to allow for easy access to the many scenic locations found within its two acres. A meandering stream with waterfalls and cascades, flows throughout many areas of the rainforest. The stream is fed by water that is pumped from Glade Lake. The water is then gravity fed down the stream bed and later flows back into the lake where it is recycled.

Our rainforest is meant to showcase a globally imperiled habitat that is thought to house at least half of all species on earth. The Fairchild rainforest, at just over two acres, is a tiny example of what is known as a tropical rainforest which are typically found much closer to the equator. Using the current global rate of rainforest destruction, one and half acres of rainforest are destroyed each second, meaning an area similar in size to our rainforest would be destroyed in less time than it would take to read this sentence. With the incredible amount of plant and animal diversity found in the rainforests, it is possible that species are being lost before they are even being discovered.

Rainforests consist of four levels: the emergent level, the canopy, the understory and the forest floor. The emergent level is the very top of the forest and is above the canopy. It contains only the fastest growing and tallest trees that have broken through the canopy, as well as, butterflies, bats, monkeys and birds of prey. Below the emergent level is the canopy which contains the majority of plant, insect and animal life found in the forest. Some estimates claim that 50% of all plant species in the world are found in the rainforest canopy. Forest canopies were not begun to be explored until the 1980s and still have not been thoroughly researched. It is thought that millions of species still remain undiscovered. Below the canopy is the understory where only 5% of the forest sunlight penetrates. Predators such as boa constrictors and jaguars are found here along with a multitude of insects, snakes, lizards and birds. Beneath it all one finds the forest floor. A rainforest’s floor is relatively barren of plant life due to the low amount of light that reaches the forest floor. The floor does contain a large amount of decaying plant and animal material that is recycled back into nutrients which are then taken up by the roots of the towering plants above.

Over 200 quality gifts have been received from generous residents and Council staff, these have now been delivered to Bear Cottage at Manly. This is the second year Mosman Council has donated the gifts to Bear Cottage where they bring some much needed happiness and cheer to the children and families staying there.

Bear Cottage is a hospice where children with terminal illnesses and their families can stay from time to time and receive rest and medical care in a home-like environment. At Bear Cottage Life is celebrated, lived to its fullest and also fondly remembered. Families do not pay for any Bear Cottage services and all operating expenses are raised entirely through community donations.

We search for our needs in our Life wherever we go...we choose what we like depending on our attitudes in life...then in the light of Holy Virtues of Generosity...that we are made aware that we also help the poor have some honest livelihood...who also deserve an equal share of the resources amongst those who are more blessed...
