Members of the Hispanic/Latino community of our diocese, many with connections to Oaxaca, Mexico, gathered at Holy Name of Jesus Church Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 to celebrate the birthday of our Blessed Mother. Mary is the patroness of Oaxaca.
The feast of the Nativity of Mary celebration included a procession through the streets of the neighborhood surrounding Holy Name of Jesus Church. It was led by Father Steve Dudek, pastor, Bishop David Walkowiak, and Father Michael Kuchar (Diocese of Lansing). Many people were dressed in traditional attire and carried flowers on their heads or in their arms. A statue of the Blessed Mother was carried during the procession and the people prayed and sang as they went.
Upon returning to the church, there was music and dancing outside followed by a celebration of Mass inside the church. Made possible through the generous contributions of parish members and others, the statue of Mary and the niche where the statue is now housed, were blessed by Bishop Walkowiak after Mass.
