Golden Gate Bridge. Golden beach. Golden life.

The Dragon Gate ("Chinatown Gate" on some maps) intersection of Bush Street and Grant Avenue marks the southern entrance to Chinatown. , in the U.S. state of California. In 1967, Mayor John F. Shelley sponsored a design competition for the gate, open to architects of Chinese descent. The contest was won by a team of three Chinese-Americans: architect Clayton Lee and landscape architects Melvin H. Lee and Joseph Yee. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held in October 1967, but construction did not begin until August 1968. Construction was delayed by bad weather and the relocation of underground utilities. Although the gateway was largely completed by April 1969. Mayor Joseph Alioto and Vice-President Yen Chia-kan of the Republic of China (Taiwan) attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. It is the first permanent ceremonial gate installed in the United States.

I often visit famous locations and find myself underwhelmed by the reality.

The Golden Gate Bridge is not one of those places.

It is not the biggest, longest, tallest, or most complex bridge i have seen, but i think it is probably the most elegant.

The India Gate is the national monument of India. Situated in the heart of New Delhi, the India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It was built in 1931. Originally known as the All India War Memorial, it is a prominent landmark in Delhi and commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives while fighting for the Indian Empire, or more correctly the British Raj, in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War.

This is the original Gate of Opportunity at Berry College, this road is no longer open to traffic due to the new intersection and highway that was built just past the gate. This was the main entrance to the school originally, the main entrance is now about a quarter of a mile down the road from here. Now the main entrance to Berry is called the Gate of Opportunity.

The compound gates do tend toward the imposing here. I'd expect a temple or an official building, not a family home. Sanur, Bali.

While down in York, SC yesterday I also snapped a few old buildings right there in center of town across from the County Courthouse. This old building that if its update to day according to the small sign on the front of the building is a Wedding Chapel. Dunno but looks cool.

Completely SOOC.

This is my favorite photo of the entire trip. After reaching Soraypampa (Camp One of the incredible Salkantay Trek) I sneaked away to a valley further up to witness the day’s wispy clouds light up during sunset behind the glow of one of southern Peru’s most magnificent Andean mountains.

This gate, on Bunker Highway north of Eaton Rapids, blocks access to the remnant right-of-way of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway (aka New York Central) branch that ran between Jonesville and North Lansing. It's across the road from the factory/warehouse complex that was built by the Michigan Peat Company in, I think, 1904.

==========

About 30 years back I got curious about the diagonal boundary of my apartment complex. This led to a personal research project to trace the LS & MS branch to North Lansing. I discovered obvious remnants all along the line. Bridge abutments in Dimondale. An old depot in Springport. Still active rail lines in south Lansing. Property lines here and there that made no obvious sense. And an odd complex of large buildings north of Eaton Rapids.

I eventually found an explanation for the large buildings on Bunker in W. Scott Munn's delightful The Only Eaton Rapids on Earth. Munn considered the Peat Company a fraudulent enterprise; others considered it a failed experiment. At this distance it's hard to tell. Both interpretations may well be true.

I've discussed this before, and have posted a number of photographs of the Peat Company complex.

The Eastern Gate (Golden Gate) is the oldest of the current gates in Jerusalem's Old City walls. The original Eastern Gate of the 2nd Temple (Herod's Temple) is actually below the existing gate. Several years ago someone fell into one of the Muslim graves right in front of this gate, and found an arch which formed the top of the Eastern Gate during the 2nd Temple period. I have seen pictures of this. However, they have now cemented over this, and placed a wrought iron fence around it, so nobody can explore it.

It is through the Eastern Gate that we as Christians believe the Messiah will return. (Jews also believe that the Messiah will come through this gate.)

Because of this prophecy, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I sealed off the Golden Gate in 1541 to prevent the Messiah's entrance. The Muslims also built a cemetery in front of the gate, in the belief that the precursor to the Messiah, Elijah, would not be able to pass through

Ezekiel 44:1-3 "Then he brought me back the way of the gate of the outward sanctuary which looketh toward the east; and it was shut. Then said the Lord unto me; This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it; because the Lord, the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut. It is for the prince"

I've been going to Dumbarton Oaks for 25 years and this is the first time I noticed the ironwork squirrel gate-stoppers. How did I miss those?

Hells Gate is an abrupt narrowing of British Columbia's Fraser River, located immediately downstream of Boston Bar in the southern Fraser Canyon. The towering rock walls of the Fraser River plunge toward each other forcing the waters through a passage only 35 metres (115 ft) wide.

Golden Gate Bridge and Baker Beach. Most popular nude beach in California.

The most impressive gate of Rhodes from a military viewpoint is no doubt that built by Grand Master Emery d'Amboise. It was completed in 1512.

This gate was built not for regular use, but just for renewal of factory heavy equipment. So it's not strange, that it is permanently closed with metal bars. It was a standard type of gate door, produced for many years in the USSR from the metal base and wooden bars nailed to it. For example, the same gates were used in fire depots, garages, and other such buildings in those times.

But there is some strange moment. Blocking bars look deformed by heavy impact from the inside. Can't say, what could have caused that impact, but I think, it was something like a heavy forklift truck backing up inside the building.

Ticket entrance gates at the South Australian Amateur Football League beside the ticket booth outside the stadium at Thebarton Oval. Apparently it has been renamed to Adelaide Airport Stadium in March 2012, due to a sponsorship agreement with Adelaide Airport. I went swimming at the neighbouring pool this morning and as the main gates were open, couldn't resist going in for a peek. I liked these gates because the horizontal bar has obviously been repainted to wipe out some graffiti, giving it extra pizzazz.
