By the time restoration began in the 1930s, little was left standing of the 1749 mission. At that time, this church and two other buildings were rebuilt. The beautifully restored church has never been used as a church.
At Misión EspÃritu Santo, Goliad. Texas. Full name: Mission Nuestra Señora de la BahÃa del EspÃritu Santo de Zúñiga. The partially restored mission is at Goliad State Park, which I visited on March 16, 2021.
Early in the 18th century, the Spanish crown decided securing its claim to Texas required establishing settlements there. Unable to recruit willing settlers in Spain, the crown turned to missions as an alternative. A mission was a fortified village run by a few priests and supported by a few soldiers. The crown supplied seed money and the soldiers. An Indian group would be persuaded to abandon their nomadic ways, embrace the Roman Catholic faith and move into the mission. The priests instructed them in the faith and in farming, ranching and European skills. The soldiers instructed them in the use of European weapons and tactics. In this win-win arrangement, the crown got its settlement, the Indians got a more dependable food supply and the priests got souls for God. After a generation or two, the Indians no longer needed the mission and would leave it to settle in the vicinity. The mission church sometimes remained in service, to minister to the local community.

In past centuries, like in other small Brandenburg towns, many of Strausberg's citizens owned land outside the town and were farmers. They were called "Ackerbürger" or farmer citizens. There houses are easily recognisable even today due to their large gates big enough to let pass horse-drawn carts transporting the harvest.
Strausberg, a town with a population of over 27,000, lies 35 kilometres northeast of Berlin on the picturesque shores of Lake Straussee. Around 1225, a castle was built on Lake Straussee and a market settlement was established on Lindenplatz The oldest building in the town also dates from this time. Parts of St. Mary's Church in Strausberg are more than 750 years old. The Protestant parish church of St. Mary is not only the oldest but also the tallest building in the town. The church is a three-nave early Gothic pillar basilica built of fieldstone. It was built around 1250 and is one of the largest preserved 13th-century churches in the Mark Brandenburg region. Numerous remains of the medieval city wall made of fieldstones have been preserved around the restored old town. Strausberg also became famous because the HQ of the GDR Ministry of Defence was located in the north of the town. Today, the Federal Armed Forces maintain several facilities there.
In NYC, one can pretty much circumvent Manhattan Island on foot or bicycling. The entire route = ~32 miles.
Last weekend, Linda and I along with our friend from the UK entered the Riverside (Hudson) walk at the 79th St Boat Basin, walked along the River, then went through some of the Park and exited at 95th St. The image is near that exit.

My sister is currently in Kyoto and sent me a few pics. I thought they were worth sharing - although I'm not the author (unfortunately ;-( )
