Grand stone gates, built on two levels, are the largest and most often photographed structures of the site, it is clear that these lead to what was once a settlement, which sets Ratu Boko apart from the other archeological sites in Central Java which are entirely religious in nature.

A detail of a surviving leaf of the ancient gates of Ganja, a masterpiece of craftsmanship of the 10/11th century, fastened to the wall facing King David Agmashenebeli’s (the Builder) grave in the yard of the Gelati monastery, near Kutaisi, Georgia. Originally one of the six gates at the castle surrounding the town of Ganja in Azerbaijan, these were created by Azerbaijani master Ibrahim ibn Osman, made of cast iron and decorated on the outside with stamped ornaments and patterns according to the chasing method.

The gates were taken as a trophy by King Demetrius I of Georgia, after he attacked and looted Ganja, that was practically defenseless following a strong earthquake in 1139 that destroyed the town.

David the Builder’s grave itself lies inside the south gate of the monastery; David wanted all who entered to step on his tomb.

I took some new photos and combined them with an older one of Brittney. I wasn't quite sure what to do with the portraits of her so I picked my favorite and made a scene with it. Still exploring with fluid, moving sections of fabric.

The Golden Gate's morning fog (which I hadn't seen from the headlands before) with the city and Bay Bridge behind it.

A torii is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the profane to the sacred The presence of a torii at the entrance is usually the simplest way to identify Shinto shrines.

Torii were traditionally made from wood or stone, but today they can be also made of reinforced concrete, copper, stainless steel or other materials. They are usually either unpainted or painted vermilion with a black upper lintel. Inari shrines typically have many torii because those who have been successful in business often donate in gratitude a torii to Inari, kami of fertility and industry. Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto has thousands of such torii, each bearing the donor name.

Pilgrim at the gates of Kongobuji Temple in Koyasan

"Kongobuji was originally constructed in 1593 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to commemorate the death of his mother. Later it was merged with a neighboring temple and reorganized into the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, the sect introduced to Japan by Kobo Daishi in 805 and headquartered on Koyasan."

The front gates of ESA’s technical heart in the Netherlands, set to be thrown open to the European public on Sunday 2 October.

In place for more than half a century, the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk on the North Sea coast is ESA’s largest establishment, focused on developing technology, planning missions and testing satellites.

A full-scale model of the ERS-1 Earth-observing satellite, launched in 1991, is placed to the right.

October’s annual ESTEC Open Day will be your chance to explore the sprawling facility, meet astronauts, scientists and mission designers and see special exhibits and actual space hardware.

This annual event takes place as part of the Netherlands’ national Weekend of Science, as well as World Space Week.

All visitors must book to gain entry on the Open Day. Visit our website to register.

This is my gringo tourist shot....I know it cheesy but I love bridges and this is a gorgeous piece of metal. There is an easter egg of some dude's foto op with his girl ;)

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the U.S. city of San Francisco, on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to Marin County, bridging both U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world".[8] It opened in 1937 and had, until 1964, the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m).

By the celandines was this open gate. The surrounding wall and gateway were festooned with ivy, and dry leaves from autumn lay on the garden path.

I did peep through the gate. The path curved around the bushes and disappeared. Behind the wall lies extensive gardens and a large house (I think it is now a Nursing Home).

A gateway like this inevitably recalls a Secret Garden or some child's story of magic or danger or mystery (or all three).

The Independence Gate (Hangul: 독립문; Hanja: 獨立門) is a memorial gate located in Seoul, South Korea. The gate was built following the First Sino-Japanese War to inspire a spirit of independence away from Korea's previous status as a Chinese tributary state, which was declared by the Treaty of Shimonoseki. It was designed by Soh Jaipil, a Korean political activist.

Shelley sponsored a design competition for the gate, open to architects of Chinese descent. The contest was won by a team of three Chinese-Americans: architect Clayton Lee and landscape architects Melvin H. Lee and Joseph Yee. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held in October 1967, but construction did not begin until August 1968. Construction was delayed by bad weather and the relocation of underground utilities. Although the gateway was largely completed by April 1969. Mayor Joseph Alioto and Vice-President Yen Chia-kan of the Republic of China (Taiwan) attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. It is the first permanent ceremonial gate installed in the United States.
