BRAZIL. Curitiba, Paraná. Garbage scavenger families on the slums of Parolin district.
Garbage scavenging is a highly widespread activity between thousands of poor families in South Brazil. Family members of all ages may usually walk for hours in the search of cardboard boxes, copper parts and virtually any material worth selling for a reasonable price in on of the many recycling companies spread throughout the cities. Often taken by criminals (or, at least, people worth avoiding when walking on the streets) by most well-established citizens and having to face the continuous fall of prices of materials destined to recycling, those workers have been fighting for years against the immediate deterioration of their situation, while roaming through the daily routine between large city centers and the constant eruptions of violence on their own neighborhoods.

The eighth annual Earth Week tree planting took place in Earl Bales Park on Sunday April 17, 2011 - and despite the unseasonable snowfall, 220 volunteers turned out to plant over 500 native trees and shrubs. Along with the planting, the team cleaned the surrounding area of garbage and debris - helping to maintain one of Toronto’s vital green spaces. Last year, volunteers planted 350 trees and over the past 8 years the team of volunteers from LEAF and Toronto Hydro have revitalized Taylor Massey Creek and surrounding areas with enhanced green spaces.

This photo is the outside dining area on the Northern section of the Russell Union. The garbage cans in the back are for discarding waste such as food or paper trash. The garbage cans also have the feature to keep out small animals from getting inside. The setting is arranged so people may choose shading or light. The Recycling bins are clearly marked with a separate bins for each recyclable. And most importantly, a place for cigarette butts.
