This church dates to the 17th century and stands on the site of a Pre-Reformation original. It was a T-plan building but now only the west gable survives. It is located north of Aberdeen, close to the coast, in open, rolling countryside.

The church is mentioned in records in 1157, when it was confirmed to the bishop of Aberdeen. By 1256 the church was a prebend of the cathedral of Aberdeen. The church was replaced by the current parish church in 1878 (see site Belhelvie North Parish Church).

Exterior Description

The church was built from roughly-coursed granite rubble, with slightly better quality granite blocks in the surviving south section of south wall. The west gable, which is complete, has a rectangular door at ground level with a rectangular window above at gallery level. There is a blocked rectangular window to the south of the door. On the apex of the gable is a tall, rectangular bellcote with ashlar masonry (so-called 'birdcage' type). It is dated 1762. Only a fragment of a stone finial survives. The 1633 bell was stolen in 1966. Only a very small section of the north and south walls survive at the west end, as well as a fragment of the south aisle (which formed the T-plan).

Moody conditions at the head of the Wasdale Valley.

The cliffs of Great Gable emerged briefly from the clouds and I caught this image. I think the mono treatment helps convey the atmosphere around the summit. I had been up there earlier in poor visibility and this was a reminder of how quickly conditions can change in the Lakeland Fells.

I liked the view of the double bell gable at St James' Church, Clanfield, built with flint walls in 1875.

Each bell is attached to a wheel (just visible in my photo) and a rope round the rim of the wheel allows the ringer to control the bell from below.

Taken on Lingmell Fell in Wasdale overlooking Great Gable. In the distance you can make out Derwent Water. Of course the thing that caught my eye was this magical cloud formation. It's like something out of Lord Of The Rings!

Prinsengracht: similarities (bell-gables) and differences. Building on the lots at the new canals was very expensive in the 17-century. Therefore the houses are high, but deep while the base of the fronts are very small and often prescribed.

Ritme in de polder

[Rhythm in the polder]

A photography exhibition of Ger Dekkers (1929-2020) and my work. A concentrated rhythmic view and the location of Flevoland are important common aspects of our photographic work. In this exhibition.

I had the honor of making a selection out of his work at the Dutch Photo Museum and took on the assignment to create all new work in the polders of Flevoland. Ger Dekkers is well known for his landscapes with movement in sequences. In my photography the architecture is a central subject and the sequential rhythm takes place inside of each image, looking for the poetry in windows and façades.

The exhibition is running until April 9, 2023.

Exhibition locations: Kunstlinie and at Railway Station Almere Centrum.

Location of image: Nobelhof Almere
