Vermonters find a lot of good uses for old commodes. Another one down the road from me has been nicely landscaped and has several species of fern growing out of it. At least, I think it's fern. Hmm.

The brief
The client has lived in the house for several years with her two six year old twin girls. The existing garden is overgrown and fairly unusable. It has very little to offer in terms of interest and the client is keen to develop the space into an extension of the home, to make it a functional space for all the family to enjoy. She would like somewhere for the kids to be able to play as well as bike storage. In such a small space, positioning and design will be paramount and the challenge will be to deliver the requirements while retaining the aesthetic appeal of the space.
The solution
The design seeks to deliver something for everyone, answering the practical requirements as well making the 5m x 4m space appealing to the eye. The side return will be given over to the children. Although a very small area it will be packed with several features to entertain the kids. An archway marks the entrance onto which a variety of things can be hung, from a swing, to beaded curtains - it can change as the girls grow. Inside the area, a blackboard allows for a creative streak, whilst a sail will fuel imaginative play, where accessories can be added over the years.
Returning to the garden proper, directly outside the backdoor a raised railway sleeper bed allows for vegetable growing whilst additional pots can be added if more veg growing is required. The flooring directly outside the backdoor will be a mixture of Indian sandstone slabs, pea shingle and creeping thyme. A bespoke timber storage unit, big enough to house an adult bike, will be constructed directly under the kitchen window. As it is a large structure in the space, it will masked as much as possible with planting and made more attractive with the addition of a living sedum roof. Flooring in the space will be on the form of an Indian sandstone circle measuring 3.6m in diameter. Asection of the outer ring will be elevated to form the a seat fronting a raised planting bed in the bottom left of the space.
The existing walls will be rendered and painted and the fence panel mended.
Planting in the space will be rich and romantic with deep plums and soft pinks set against zingy limed green varieties. A mixture of shrubs and herbaceous perennials, with several climbers will maximise the planting space, while a specimen Acer atro purpureum will take centre stage in the raised bed, adding height and a focal point.

The MCP3909/dsPIC33F 3-Phase Energy Meter Reference Design is a fully functional energy meter with many advanced features such as harmonic analysis, per phase distortion information, sag detection, four quadrant energy measurement, and active and reactive power calculation. It uses Microchip’s powerful 16-bit dsPIC33F Microcontroller Unit (MCU).
The MCP3909/dsPIC33F 3-Phase Energy Meter Reference Design is unique in the fact that all calculations take advantage of the dsPIC33F DSP engine, and all output quantities are calculated in the frequency domain through the use of direct fourier transforms (DFT). This approach yields a large volume of outputs for a variety of meter designs, from simple active power only energy meters, to advanced energy meters requiring harmonic analysis. Another significant advantage of this design, is that the dsPIC firmware implements a quasi-synchronous sampling algorithm, eliminating the need for external zero-crossing detection and PLL circuit for the synchronization of ADC samples to line frequency. The line frequency is measured in software and corrected for measurement errors caused by frequency fluctuations in the power grid. This additional processing on the dsPIC reduces the overall meter cost by eliminating the requirement for a PLL circuit.

a company will focus its benchmarking on a single function to improve the operation of that particular function. Complex functions such as Human Resources, Finance and Accounting and Information and Communication Technology are unlikely to be directly comparable in cost and efficiency terms and may need to be disaggregated into processes to make valid comparison.

Brainstorming & Collaborative Session of MCHIP, USAID &Rotary Club of Greek, Sep 23, 2014
Thousands of women and newborns in Pakistan die each year as a result of preventable complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Pakistan’s maternal mortality ratio at 276 per 100,000 live births (2006-2007 Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey) is one of the highest in South Asia. Most of these deaths can be prevented if there were enough properly trained, competent and supported midwives working in the communities and in a functional health system.
The Maternal & Child health Integrated Program (MCHIP) along with program partner USAID and event partners Rotary Clubs of R.I district 3271 met on 20 September 2014 for a brainstorming and collaborative event. There were presentations on the importance of support for midwives in the community, challenges faced by maternal and child health and efforts that can be undertaken by corporate partners in improving quality of maternal and child health practice in Pakistan. The brainstorming session focused on supporting community midwives, improvement of quality of mother and child health services and a dire need for community distribution of misoprostol and chlorhexidine.
Held at a Marriott hotel karachi, the session’s audience had over 70 participants and included doctors, obstetricians, businessmen and philanthropists. During the event; Shaan Technologies private Limited, corporate partners with MCHIP/Jhpiego presented a documentary video about application of solar energy for remote clinics. Shaantech also donated 10 solar LED lamps for community midwives.

A new functional fitness training room equipped for cutting-edge cross-fitness workouts opened Nov. 1 at the Carey Physical Fitness Center on Camp Casey.
Col. John M. Scott, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I and other garrison officials took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the room.
It measures 20 feet by 44 feet and is equipped with TRX suspension bands, resistance bands, assisted pull-up suspension bands, battling ropes, Olympic rings, Olympic bars, rubber weight plates, weighted jump ropes, kettle bells, dumbbells, stability balls, medicine balls, plyometric boxes, a speed ladder, situp bar, mini hurdles, and a variety of workout machines, among other fitness items.
While there are many examples of architecturally spectacular mosques in the world, a mosque can be as simple as a room. This is the mosque just off the beach next to the fish market.
