ω-Amino-functionalized polystyrene (PS-NH2) was synthesized at room temperature in the presence of 80% THF / 20% benzene via high-vacuum techniques. Simulations (QM/MM) illustrate the delocalization of electrostatic potential for effective polystyryl anion separation (inner), while the C-Br bond dissociates with preferential orientation.

Thoughts of the first trip to Grand Central “Madison” Feb 3, 2023

This was an event I had been looking forward to for quite some time, only to be delayed by the now famous ventilation problem at the new station. I finally had the opportunity to go this past Friday, and of course it was to be an extremely cold and windy day (temperatures dropping into the single numbers later in the day). But I’d be inside, so what the heck!

I purchased my tickets at the Mineola TVM, and noticed that instead of three machines there were now two. And as my tickets came out, along with two $1.00 coins, they were printed as going to “Grand Central” without the Madison. Arrived on track 1 at Jamaica and the “shuttle” train to Grand Central was waiting on track 5. A train of 8 M7’s, and it was to be an express train. Ridership was very light, only 4-5 passengers on the car I was on. All verbal announcements were to “Grand Central”.

Trip through the East River tunnel was very quick and smooth, and as we arrived near GCM we were held for an outbound train for about 1”.

We arrived on track 304 on the lower level of the new Grand Central (Madison) terminal, and all I can say is “Magnificent!” To summarize several hours of wandering around the facility, and purposely trying to get lost, it is a trip well worth the effort! As I stated before, ridership was very light, and now is a great time to visit, as the facility is very empty and you can roam around at leisure, and do whatever photographic work you want without people in the way. It is also perhaps the safest place to be in New York City, as there are uniformed MTA police in abundance, in fact you will never be out of sight of one. Also there are numerous MTA/LIRR employees and “Ambassadors” around to ask for assistance.

Architecturally the facility is both simple and modern, yet is highly functional, and contains some very colorful and pleasant art work. Even though you are way below ground (some 150’ from street level) there is no feeling of claustrophobia as the areas are spacious and well lite throughout. Also there are excellent views of arriving and departing trains at the train rooms. Along the upper corridors are many empty vendor locations, which in my opinion will most likely remain empty for quite some time to come, as I simply do not think there will be a demand for anything more than a place to pick up a few cans of beer for the trip home. Also the logistics of bringing product into the station will be difficult at best.

About the only criticism I might have is with the very long escalators from the Madison Ave corridor to the track levels. They are long, very, very, long! And when you look down (which you really don’t want to do), it’s a bit unnerving (182’ long and 90’ in depth, the ride takes almost two minutes). If you have a tendency towards Acrophobia & Vertigo, beware! To make matters worse the rubber hand rail belt moves slightly faster than the stairs (not uncommon) and as you hold on for dear life you will find your upper body being pulled forward and down. You’ll need to release your “death” grasp of the railing and move your hand back several times. Perhaps this will be less of a problem when the escalators are more crowded in the future, as sight distances will be less.

The upper Madison Ave corridor also contains state of the art ticket, & police areas, and there is plenty of signage to direct you into GCT. It can be said that the new facility does not in any way detract from the magnificence of Grand Central as we all knew it. It is separate and apart from the terminal, but certainly does provide a wonderful and weatherproof connection between the LIRR and MNRR. It really makes going to JFK airport simple for the MNRR rider, while providing the rider from Long Island an access to the East Side.

In retrospect it seems as though the “soft start” to the Grand Central service was a wise decision so that operational bugs could be sorted out before regular operations begins. This is an unusual luxury, as this is a service of “addition” rather than a replacement.

The return trip was with a train of 8 M9 cars, and the electronic signage was functional. I changed trains at Jamaica, and had considerable time to explore Jamaica station for the first in a long time.

A newly renovated Functional Training Center equipped for cutting-edge cross-fit workouts opened at Camp Stanley Jan. 28, in Bldg. 2609. The facility, which is next door to the Camp Stanley Fitness Center, is equipped with an array of fitness equipment that includes dumbbells, kettle bells, medicine balls, and TRX equipment - a system of bands suspended from overhead that rely on gravity and afford a workout to a variety of muscle groups and joints. Among Warrior Country officials who marked the reopening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony were Brig. Gen. Paul J. Laughlin, the 2nd Infantry Division’s Deputy Commanding General for Maneuver, and Col. John M. Scott, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I.

An amazing wall of bolts, nuts & screws. Organized by size and type, then labeled by hand. Everything is a bit rusty, but this only adds to the charm. This is all slightly more functional than Home Depot.

Mansfield, TX – Functional Taekwondo, opened in April 2017, is a hybrid martial art that combines the arts of western boxing, Muay Thai (Thai kickboxing) and Olympic style Taekwondo. Their school is suitable for children, teens, adults, families and professional fighters alike. The curriculum is divided into separate age groups and skill levels to ensure a safe, effective, and most of all, FUN martial arts practice to help their students become safe and powerful individuals.

Taylor Kelly, the owner, is a mixed martial artist with a Taekwondo background. He opened Functional Taekwondo so that he could offer Taekwondo in a structure similar to that of combat sports. The idea came to him when he was training at a gym in Portland, Oregon that offered him a job to teach Taekwondo kicks for MMA competitors. As his ideas evolved and he continued to train, he came to the conclusion that the only way Taekwondo can be effective is if the boxing and Muay Thai foundations were present. Thus, he created a school that offered the same structure and discipline of Taekwondo while offering a complete striking style suitable for self-defense and high-level competition.

What separates them from other typical Taekwondo schools is that they highly emphasize self-defense as the overarching theme and only teach techniques that can be applied against progressive resistance.

Students are awarded a new rank based on how well they can defend themselves. This includes a wide variety of sparring, conditioning, and knowing the necessary steps to take when in a hostile situation.

For children, Functional Taekwondo teaches the fundamentals of stranger awareness, positive character development, and how to deal with bullying through their martial arts training. Studies show that children who engage in martial arts have higher self-esteem, more focus, are healthier, and become more studious in their academics.

“One thing that any customer will notice whether they watch their kids take a class, or take one themselves, is the high level of practicality in what we teach. Even in our cardio kickboxing classes we are teaching legitimate striking technique and everything is very personalized. In our kids classes, it takes a very long time for children to rank up in belts (we don’t give kids blackbelts/junior blackbelts, something that most Taekwondo schools do). That being said, children will be learning how to really fight while developing character skills that will affect them the rest of their lives.”

-Taylor Kelly

In their adult program, you will be getting some of the highest energy and fun workouts of your life. Additionally, not only will you gain strength, improve cardio performance, get muscle tone, burn fat, and have more energy, you will also be learning legitimate skills for self-defense. If you wish to compete, they also can train you for that as well.

As you can see, functional Taekwondo is not exclusive to just children or adults, it is a program designed for the whole family. Go check them out!

Taken inside the 13th-century rock-hewn Church of Bet Abba Libanos, this photo shows one of the Axumite faux beam-ends at the upper left corner of a window, and a nearby brass bell hanging from a hook.

I was captivated by the geometric shapes and the lighting in the photo.

For an example of a complete window with Axumite beam-ends at the corners, see below.

It is generally believed that the great stone steles at Axum depict - in a single piece of rock - structures assembled from components of different materials. The cube-like structures at the corners of blind windows on steles are thought to represent the ends of wooden beams on structures built in the conventional manner.

It isn't clear in my mind whether the beams would have been functional or decorative; I'm inclined to believe they were at least partly decorative.

One of the intriguing characteristics of church architecture in Lalibela is the presence of Axumite design elements more than 700 years after the Kingdom of Axum reached its peak.

This pool side surround consists of thousands and thousands (and thousands) of gold and white marble pebbles. It was modeled after a design the owners once saw during a trip to Spain.

The new self-checkout stations in the Central Library have a nice, minimalistic look to them. They're also faster, smarter and more functional than the old scan-one-book-at-a-time machines. Now you can fan out all your books, and -- as long as the bar codes are visible from above -- they'll all be scanned and checked out at the same time. Fast and easy.

A few more of the Silverton houses. The second of the pair on the left looks as though its windows might be original. In a further proof of Fray's Law, privet hedges, becoming uncommon further south, endure here. When I was a boy there were three distinct sorts: first there was the kind with very dark shiny leaves; then, most common, was the intermediate sort that we see in the photo; last was a variety with tiny leaves disposed on either side of the stem. "Privet hedge" was a generic term; I think the dark shiny kind may actually have been laurel, and it is improbable that the sort with tiny leaves could belong to the same botanical family. Everywhere they are giving way before the advance of Leylandii, a horrible gloomy plant that is impenetrable to light, doesn't have proper leaves, looks the same at all seasons and grows several feet a year. When I come to power it will be illegal to plant them and juvenile delinquents on Community Service will be formed into chopping squads whose task it will be to rid our suburbs of this accursed plant.

Drimmeen Harbour, Errislannen Peninsula - showing structural damage to the pier after recent winter storms.

Appraisal:

It is evident that considerable effort went into the construction of this pier which is attested to by the size of the large cut limestone blocks of which it is constructed.

This quay performs the important role of protecting boats for the local community which grouped together to raise funds for reconstruction of the pier after a storm in 1991 which almost destroyed the quay walls.

It retains many interesting features such as the granite mooring posts, iron mooring rings and stone steps, all of which contribute to the functionality and aesthetic quality of the quay.

Drive the streets of Paris, Rome, Barcelona or London and you'll see the smart fortwo has become more than just fuel efficient transportation - it has become the "it" car in many countries throughout the world. In fact, we could say that the over 900,000 smart fortwos sold in 36 other countries are now a worldwide statement on innovation, intelligence, functionality and the simple joy of driving.

Now the United States has joined the party. In January 2008 smart arrived to the States leaving its exhibit space at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (it is one of only six cars in the world to achieve this distinction and the only one still in production and on sale today).

Preparations for the smart fortwo began in the early 1990's with a Joint Venture between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch, the makers of Swatch watches known for their wide array of colorful designs. Nicolas Hayek, the inventor of the Swatch watch brought his ideas for an "ultra-urban" car to Mercedes-Benz.

* smart remains a vital member of Mercedes-Benz Cars, a Daimler AG Company.

* smart USA, a division of Penske Automotive Group, is the exclusive distributor for smart in North America and Puerto Rico. smart USA is headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The smart fortwo is already somewhat of a "star" in the United States. It has the privileged distinctions of being on display as a work of art at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. It is the only vehicle on display at MOMA which is still in production and on sale today.

Mercedes-Benz took on this engineering challenge with the outcome of one of the most innovative cars ever introduced.

Full development of the concept started in 1994 and the smart fortwo debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1997. The response was fantastic. The smart fortwo garnered more print space and TV coverage than any other car at the show.

Production began in 1998 in Hambach, France. That same year, smart became a 100% owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG.

The challenge of the smart fortwo design started with the approach to safety. The tridion safety cell was Mercedes-Benz's answer for a small car that can meet high safety standards. The tridion safety cell is a "hard shell" that surrounds the smart fortwo's occupants with an energy displacing system of longitudinal and transverse structural members. Then the engineering team added Electronic Stability Control (esp) and ABS brakes to make the smart even more technologically advanced.

Other innovations like the selection of energy efficient and recyclable materials, the removable door panels (you have many options to change color of your smart as you desire) and a high driving position for great visibility and easy entry in a small car combined to make smart a true revolution in driving style.

Since its introduction the smart product range has continued to expand and now includes a sporty cabriolet model. And the innovation continues. We're constantly pushing the envelope of automotive design to keep smart at the leading edge.

These are the cheapest possible vinyl tiles I could find. I could have put down black and white checkers, which would have been cooler, but that would have cost twice as much. And besides, it'll be covered in chicken litter soon enough.

These are adhesive-backed stick-down tiles. They are outrageously easy to put down; I did the middle of the floor in half an hour last night and the edges (which required cutting) in another hour this morning.

Most apps are designed like this: putting functionality first, rather than the user's needs.

This is a hypothetical app for a futuristic hotel, where you can control most aspects of your stay (and your room) using your iPhone.

Part of a small group of houses at Silverton, near Dumbarton, Scotland. They occupy a corner of an estate whose houses are otherwise conventional, with pitched roofs. It's as though they weren't quite sure what they were doing. In one place flat-roofed houses with bay windows looked out at houses of precisely the same pattern on the opposite side of the road, but with pitched roofs. I'm not sure whether it's accurate to call these houses "Modernist". They are so highly stylised that they belong to no style, being merely cubes with windows. I quite like their grim functionalism; all the same I wouldn't want too much of it.
