The Barcelona chair is a chair designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich. It was originally designed for the German Pavilion, that country's entry for the International Exposition of 1929, which was hosted by Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was first used in Villa Tugendhat, a World Heritage Site designed by Mies van der Rohe in the city of Brno (Czech Republic).
The frame was initially designed to be bolted together, but was redesigned in 1950 using stainless steel, which allowed the frame to be formed by a seamless piece of metal, giving it a smoother appearance. Bovine leather replaced the ivory-colored pigskin which was used for the original pieces.
The functional design and elements of it that were patented by Mies in Germany, Spain and the United States in the 1930s have since expired. The Barcelona chair was manufactured in the US and Europe in limited production from the 1930s to the 1950s. In 1953 Mies ceded his rights and his name on the design to Knoll, knowing that his design patents were expired. This collaboration then renewed popularity in the design.
Knoll claims to be the current licensed manufacturer and holder of all trademark rights to the design. In 1965, Knoll purchased the trademark rights to the Barcelona word from Drexel. In 2004, Knoll received trade dress rights to the design from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Despite these trademarks, a large replica market continues. Gordon International New York has continued to manufacture the designs since the 1970s, even after a court battle against Knoll in 2005. In 2011, another court battle erupted between Knoll and RegencyShop.com; the outcome is pending. In 2013, RegencyShop.com filed a counter-suit against Knoll in Central District of California, Western Division alleging fraud on the USPTO regarding Barcelona furniture designs.
Although many architects and furniture designers of the Bauhaus era were intent on providing well-designed homes and impeccably manufactured furnishings for the "common man," the Barcelona chair was an exception. It was designed for the Spanish Royalty to oversee the opening ceremonies of the exhibition and described by Time magazine as inhabiting "his sumptuous German pavilion." The form is thought to be extrapolated from Roman folding chairs known as the Curule chair – upholstered stools used by Roman aristocracy. According to Knoll Inc., despite its industrial appearance the Barcelona chair requires much hand craftsmanship.
Since 1953 Knoll Inc has manufactured Barcelona chairs. They make the frame in two different steel configurations, chrome and stainless. They say that their chairs are almost completely hand-laboured, and that a facsimile of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's signature is stamped into each chair.
Barcelona chairs are made by other manufacturers worldwide and are sold under different marketing names.
In his 1981 book about modern architecture, From Bauhaus to Our House, Tom Wolfe mocked the Barcelona chair as "the Platonic ideal of chair", and wrote that, despite its high price, owning one had become a necessity for young architects: "When you saw the holy object on the sisal rug, you knew you were in a household where a fledgeling architect and his young wife had sacrificed everything to bring the symbol of the godly mission into their home." It seems to me that many more things in this world should be embroidered. Functional...not always. ;) But in this case, it has worked out quite well!
The HDPS is capable of performing complex heat treatments on sheet steel in controlled atmospheres before dipping in a bath of molten zinc alloy.
The HDPS allows us to investigate the interactions between the steel substrate and the coating before making changes in order to improve the final product. We are able to alter the chemistry of the bath to investigate the role of micro-additions on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of coatings.
This is the only HDPS in a European University and was built to our specification.

The wooden puppets that Simmonds started carving as a hobby became the basis for one of three professional puppet theatres touring England in the 1920s and ‘30s. This piece was used in the final scene of the Harvest Home show. Five or six puppets of farm workers were in the waggon celebrating the end of the harvest as it was pulled along the stage. These puppet shows were magical events for all who saw them, young and old.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Garrison Commander Col. Paul Fellinger dedicated a new Functional Fitness Training Facility inside the Price Fitness Center here April 7. The goal for the new facility is to provide a greater range of physical training options for service members at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center to achieve combat readiness. Funding for the facility was provided by local community activist Bud Colligan.

BMW Welt and BMW Headquarters

BMW Welt (English – BMW World), is a multi-functional customer experience and exhibition facility of the BMW AG, located in Munich, Germany. In direct proximity to the BMW Headquarters and the Olympiapark, it is designed to present the current products of BMW, be a distribution center for BMW cars, and offer an event forum and a conference center.

BMW Headquarters (German: BMW-Vierzylinder "BMW four-cylinder"; also BMW Tower) is a Munich landmark, which has been serving as world headquarters for the Bavarian automaker for over 30 years. The building was declared historical in 1999. An extensive remodel commenced in 2004 and was completed in 2006.
The Tower was built between 1968 and 1972 and was ready just in time for 1972 Summer Olympics. Its inauguration followed on 18 May 1973. The building stands 101 m (roughly 331 feet) tall, is located in direct proximity of the Olympic Village and is often mentioned as one of the most notable examples of architecture in Munich. The large cathedral exterior is supposed to mimic the shape of a tire in a race car, with the garage representing the cylinder head. Both buildings were designed by the Austrian architect Karl Schwanzer [1].
The main tower consists of four vertical cylinders standing next to and across from each other. Each cylinder is divided horizontally in its center by a mold in the facade. Notably, these cylinders do not stand on the ground, they are suspended on a central support tower. During the construction, individual floors were assembled on the ground and then elevated. The tower has a diameter of 52.30 meters (roughly 171 feet). The building has 22 occupied floors, two of which are basements and 18 serve as office space. Millions of dollars have been spent on the facility due to high demand in progression.

I use this every day, and it's lovely. I can't imagine how old it is, but it never jams, and works better than any other stapler I've tried.
There were 35 ship models in the tomb. The power of magic would make each full size and functional in the afterlife.
Visited this exhibition, at Saatchi Gallery in London , "'TUTANKHAMUN: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh" with Clare Fantastic display of 150 authentic pieces from the tomb None of my pictures do the items on display any justice. Tutankhamun died c 1342-1325 BC.There were 5,398 items found in the tomb, including a solid gold coffin, face mask, thrones, archery bows, trumpets, a lotus chalice, food, wine, sandals, and fresh linen underwear.
