Information

„Just by coincidence, I seem to be listing these Canary natives in order of rarity. This evergreen shrub with silky leaves and bright yellow flowers from February to April is possibly the rarest plant I have ever seen. It is native to just a small area in the north of Gran Canaria and only about a dozen plants are known in the wild and it is thought that there are more plants in the Botanic garden at Tafira than anywhere in the wild. This seems amazing and just shows that plant conservation is not all about the rain forest. Here we have a plant that is critically endangered and it is on an island that is a prime tourist destination for Europeans. I do not think, however, that the impact of tourism is to blame in this case since the habitat is in the relatively ‘unspoilt’ area around De Pino Santo.“

The period when the blossom is in full bloom is perhaps the most beautiful time of the year.

The colorful flowers literally give life color.

At this time of year, the low-stem and standard fruit trees put on their white and pink wigs and the delicate flowers exude a subtle sweet scent.

This is the time when the bees do their important pollination work.

I like a lot the color of this lens, because it slightly suppresses the yellows, like the old Zeiss, while maintaining a good contrast and relatively deep blacks.

While Japanese cherry blossoms are universally known and give the impression of being a rather uniform category of flowers, looking at them in detail, can really give you a headache, due to the many differences and variations among them, as well as the regard and history they have.

Common cherry blossoms, such as those called Somei Yoshino, have five petals and are usually called a ’single bloom’ flower [一重咲].Blossoms with six or more petals, like Yaezakura, are classified as double cherry blossoms - the best and more beautiful, in my opinion.

Subdivisions go on further down in an apparently never-ending cascate of criteria and definitions: ‘semi-double blooms’; flower counts of '6 to 15'; single and double flowers mixed in one tree; blooms of 70 petals; ‘chrysanthemums’ bloom of 100 and more petals, etc.

In any case, Yaezakura seems to be a hybrid between the wild species Oshimazakura and Yamazakura, and are also called ‘Botanzakura’ for the look of their flowers... just like fluffy buttons. The flowering period is one to two weeks later than that of the Somei Yoshino, exactly when the first start falling, which in Kanto and Kansai areas correspond to mid-April. This year we are a bit early, it seems.
