Decimated by the historic floods of 2013, the beauty of St. Vrain Creek and surrounding St. Vrain Canyon in Boulder County, Colorado shines through as nature seeks to restore its balance.

A least chipmunk (Neotamias minimus) advances up a rock to get a better view of its world. Least chipmunks are the most common chipmunks in the Rocky Mountains, occurring from low elevation pine forests up into the alpine tundra. Seemingly in constant motion, least chipmunks spend the majority of their time foraging for seeds, fruits, and small insects. During the winter they hibernate (true torpor- mostly turn off their internal heaters) in nests insulated with dried plants, fur, and feathers, but occasionally emerge from torpor to eat.

This summer there seemed to be a bumper crop of least chipmunks in the Colorado Front Range and possibly elsewhere. I had 4 that regularly foraged around my cabin at the Mountain Research Station, providing entertainment rivaling any new cable tv series. One chipmunk figured out how to forage inside the cabin (along with the deer mice and occasional pack rat). Evidently I need to patch some holes.

Alpenglow at sunrise on Pikes Peak

A friend has several of these in a pen. These are not indigenous to United States. I made this composite from two images.

View On Black

Feels like the top of the world here.

Mountain wave/ lenticular clouds on the east slopes of the Colorado Front Range form when strong winds blowing out of the west are deflected by the Rocky Mountains. The moisture in the clouds condenses when forced upward, forming clouds. These clouds appear stationary, but they are quite dynamic, continually forming on the windward side (edge of the blue sky here) and dissipating toward the leeward side. Their inner beauty shows best when the sun is near the horizon at sunrise or sunset (as here). These clouds had particularly nice sharp edges to them.

With plenty of alpenglow on the Front Range mountains very early on the morning of January 22, 2007, an eastbound Union Pacific coal train drops downgrade just west of Leyden, Colorado.

rockchuck from east side of string lake, grand teton national park, wyoming. it was pretty hazy due to the barry forest fire.

a treatment I don't normally use, but like it for this subject because cuts through some of the haze and can de-emphasize some mottled colors in the trees.

I have not seen many pictures of just rockchuck, this peak is normally overpowered by its more famous neighbors: grand and middle teton and mt moran.
