A cold winter's day is when I first laid eyes on this house. I parked at the end of the driveway (just barely) and walked down just as the sky was turning that deep blue colour after the sun has set. I walked inside and had a quick look around and knew this was a location that I needed to come back to. Unfortunately, I never marked down the location, I thought about the house numerous times over the years and knew that I had to find it again to go back there. Fast forward a few years and the location again popped back onto my radar. I finally made it out there and was able to see it again for the first time.

Built in the late 1800s this Victorian Farmhouse has sat abandoned for about 16 years according to a calendar on the wall from 2006. A time capsule with furniture, belongings and personal items left behind. It also has one of the most amazing staircases I have seen inside an abandoned farmhouse. It has sat decaying for at least that long while the surrounding land was used for livestock until at least 2015. Since then the land surrounding the home has become severely overgrown and almost invisible to people travelling by while the surrounding crops continue to be actively farmed.

The White-fronted Tern are very active at Scarborough, Christchurch at present. Here is one of the flight shots I managed but with an artistic edit applied.

It was snowing for the first time today as I was taking this.

Well, the first time any snow actually stuck to the ground.

If you click "L" you can see some snow on my hat and jacket.

I slept all day today and woke up at 8pm..so I went to take pictures to distract myself.

I feel like I should've done some things differently today.

But what's done is done.

This is our "Hannukah Bush" as I call it.

It's just Christmas lights around a bush with blue and white ornaments, which remind me of Hannukah.

This is practically sooc btw.

I appreciate it a lot, everyone :) - thanks for making it to the Front Page <3

Just got back from traveling out west and caught this dying gust front in Egg Harbor Township, NJ.

Migrants from their tundra breeding grounds stop over in Missouri River refuge ahead of a winter storm. A Bald Eagle roused the geese with a lazy flyover.

What a surprise to awaken to new colors and growth. My wife does the flowers that make my lawn into a summer version of Christmas morning. Efland, NC

Because you and I both liked this. <3

If Lina wanted to go out for a comfort break, we had to let her out the front door, as it was more secure than the 'garden' at the back. It was pretty with the plants here, although rather overlooked by the neighbouring houses and people walking down the street to the shops!!

Making it's call or telling me something ;-)

I'm relatively new to bird photography; after I take a shot of a bird I often have to look them up on the computer when I get home to get an ID.

I knew these were swallows but not sure their name. This couple helped me out by displaying both the front and back. I think Barn Swallows are beautiful birds; the nice light here really made their colors pop.

I'm kind of aware of the fact that I don't post as frequently on Flickr as I used to. One of the reasons is that I had several albums, with dozens and dozens of photos, and I made the posting of those albums into projects that consumed a fair amount of time. I have several other albums, but there's only one that is both full of photos and full of photos of a high-quality and/or contains lots of photos with highly-interesting content. When the time comes to post that one album, I hope I remember to do it.

Meanwhile, here's a little morsel, an album I've had for a while. I don't, in fact, remember where I bought it, but it was pre-Iowa, which means either South Carolina, Florida, or the Missouri triangle as the source of purchase. For some reason, I have the state of Maryland attached to my memory of where these photos might have been taken, and where the school might be. Don't know why I have that memory, as there is no intrinsic evidence to support that association.

Most of these kids are smiling. This photographer had The Knack, and, to be honest, I worry about the kids who aren't smiling. My most haunting memory of going into the Arkansas Public Schools, K through 12 (I participated in a program called "Poets in the Schools," (though, of course, I was never a poet), until I got fired for being a bad boy (and my indiscretion does not even make for a very good story), oh yeah, my most haunting memory, is how in kindergarten, just about all the kids, rich and poor, black and white, were boiling over with irrepressible enthusiasm, and by the time they were sophomores and juniors and seniors, they had been sorted out, and the kids who as kindergartners were no less able, no less inventive, no less alive, were now, after the democratizing socialization process, shunted aside, deemed lesser, slotted to change tires down at the Firestone store, or put on an apron and primp the lettuce at the local grocery. And that was before Wal-Mart had done the worst of its work. Even the teachers, at least some, if not most of them, participated in the process. They would point out the troublemakers for you, and speak sneeringly of them. The experience was uplifting, and terribly disheartening, which is how I feel about my wonderful, dastardly country.

If you need steps to your front door, this arrangement I thought was rather impressive.

The front porch of the old country store in Rockbridge County in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia…

Old age, believe me, is a good and pleasant thing. It is true you are gently shouldered off the stage, but then you are given such a comfortable front stall as spectator.

Storm Front

Billy Joel

Safe at harbor, everything is easy

Off to starboard, daylight comes up fast

Now I'm restless for the open water

Red flags are flying from the Coast Guard mast

They told me to stay, I heard all the information

I motored away and steered straight ahead

Though the weatherman said

There's a storm front coming (mood indigo)

White water running and the pressure is low

Storm front coming (mood indigo)

Small craft warning on the radio

Went down to shoot Ulladulla Harbour one morning last week.

Spent about 45 minutes shooting away on the tripod with the remote trigger. Thought I was finished, packed everything away, looked over my shoulder and saw this forming.

Ripped the backpack off, grabbed the camera, with no time for filters or tripod, clicked it into bracket mode, and shot off 6 frames bracketed, handheld.

Boom!!!

Hope you like “Storm Front”

Cheers, Mike
