ST44-1113 with early morning regular freight train TMWSc 59582 from Gdynia Port GPW to KWK Halemba leaves Żukowo Wschodnie station. August 14, 2006.

For a couple of years it was said that freight trains on old Coal Trunk Line was a result of PKP PLK's track access charges policy which made the cost of freight trains on unelectrified secondary lines far less in comparison to electrified mainlines. I'm not sure whether it was a case, or rather the problems with mainline capacity, anyway it let railway photographers make many pictures of freight trains here, as up to three Southbound trains were running during daylight (this one to KWK Halemba, tankers to Puławy Azoty, and the third to Chełm Wschodni). They were quite punctual, although not running everyday, except of this very one, that was every day certainty.

ST44-1113 z porannym pociągiem towarowym stałego kursowania TMWSc 59582 relacji Gdynia Port GPW - KWK Halemba, opuszcza stację Żukowo Wschodnie. 14 sierpnia 2006 roku.

So after watching them 'Blast Off' from Monmouth the agonizingly slow speed chase was underway. This is not your father's Maine Central...no more CTC and no more 40 mph...it's a plodding, dark, mostly 10 mph affair these days. But I suppose if you didn't know any better it would look impressive from these still photos (excepting the ratty patch jobs of course) with six units and intermodal on the head pin.

Here is the decent sized Pan Am Railways train POWA headed to Waterville with 37 loads, 45 empties, 5903 ft trailing three C40-8s (MEC 7535, 7609, 7620) and three dead in tow GP40-2LWs (MEC 506, 515, 503). They are hugging the shore of Maranacook Lake at about MP 141.3 on the modern day Freight Main, the one time MEC Portland Division.

Duo of Czech 740-class locomotives (740.426 and 740.638) with international freight train 661010 from Meziměsti to Rogoźnica (here you can read the story about this very train, worth reading) approach Boguszów Gorce Wschód junction. Before it happens, the train will pass the area that used to be a freight station (Boguszów Gorce Towarowy, formerly Fellhammer Güterbahnhof) just after this curve. It seems more than 50 years ago the station tracks were dismantled. July 4, 2021.

On this May evening, one of CP's Heritage SD70ACUs made its way to the rear of an autorack originating from the Port of Portland, allowing for some decent late afternoon angles along the North Bank. The end of the train is seen crossing the bridge at Rock Cove on the outskirts of downtown Stevenson. This truss is currently in the process of being replaced.

Sledges are dangerous. Trust me. I would experience that in person in a couple of hours - at this moment we were only making sure not to be hit by one coming down the hill. With success, fortunately. All to get a nice view of the Samedan to Chur freight train. Towering above it all is the town of Latsch.

The freight train, hauled by Ge 6/6 II 701, is relatively long compared to the ones we had seen so far. I think these trains sometimes stop at intermediate stations to pick up, or drop off, cars.

Increasingly I seem to be heading out to get a single working - and yesterday was no exception, although I managed to bag a few extra shots of DMUs which form the vast majority of trains on this line.

The 'target' train is the 7.25am Wilton EFW - Knowsley Freight Terminal (6M16) empty domestic and industrial refuse containers, hauled this day by DB Cargo Shed 66067. It's captured here passing through the short tunnel under Deanroyd Road, Walsden, and I'm stood over the cut-and-cover tunnel close to Bottomley Road where, a few yards behind me, lies the northern portal of the 1.6 mile Summit Tunnel.

I'd scoped this shot out a few weeks ago when there were fewer leaves on the trees, but the low sun created some challenging reflections off the yellow fronts rendering most shots all but useless. I got lucky yesterday though because a cloud shadow just managed to disappear no more than 10 secs before the train came around the corner, and of course the higher sun didn't pose quite the same reflection problems it did on the last visit. Thankfully too there was just enough of a gap above the top of the railing to capture both loco and one of the blue containers in the frame.

It was nice to see the plan come to fruition .... but not quite as nice as the bacon butty I enjoyed afterwards in the lay-by up the road where I'd parked the car :)

Shot was taken right side of the fence.

07 059 departing from Dobrich, with a freight train.

It is Freight Car Friday so we're staying with our theme of Boston and Maine history around the vast ghostly ruins of the North Billerica shop complex.

For decades this area was a graveyard of cool locomotives and cars and I remember on my first visit in the mid 1990s getting my one and only glimpse of a real Maine Central harvest gold unit, albeit stripped and in the dead line. Today all those are long gone and with the exception of a few historic pieces preserved by the MBTA this boxcar is about it these days. Sitting behind the former storehouse / general office building on an isolated disconnected piece of track slowly sinking into the much is BM 76143, a 40 ft 65 ton car built in March 1957 as part of a 538 car order (Lot 8323) from Pullman Standard and delivered in bluen and black with giant McGinnis style billboard logos.

JRF Train #3086 leads the daily cross country intermodal train from Sapporo to Nagoya through the Tokyo core at the busiest train station in the world, Shinjuku. Catching it here at 11:57 is almost always guaranteed since the Shonan-Shinjuku Line is scheduled down to the second. If they're late by even a few minutes, the train will have to wait it out around Omiya for several hours until another slot opens up later that afternoon. This is what actual Precision Scheduled Railroading looks like.
