I've been archive surfing and found this one of the beautiful Franz Josef Glacier taken earlier this year....
The Kea (Nestor notabilis) is an endangered bird, and the world's only alpine parrot. It is found in and around New Zealand's Southern Alps.
This kea was photographed in the vicinity of Franz Josef glacier.
The once-advancing face of the twelve kilometre long Franz Josef Glacier is retreating, due to global warming. Situated in the Westland Tai Pontini National Park, on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, it is visited by tourists who employ helicopters to land them on the more stable upper sections of the ice flow.
One (or three) of the most spectacular waterfalls I've seen. I really struggled to find a composition that worked with all three in one shot. So, the solution, a triptych.

The mountain on the right in the clouds is Aoraki/Mount Cook while the glacier valley in the middle is the one of the Franz Josef Glacier. Together with it's neighbor the Fox Glacier these are the only two glaciers in the world that decent into subtropical rainforest.

This photo is from Archives New Zealand's National Publicity Studios collection.
The National Publicity Studios was established in 1945, but its beginnings can be traced back to the establishment in 1924 of a Publicity Office - part of the Department of Internal Affairs. The emphasis of this Publicity Office was on films, photographs and booklets.
The purpose of the National Publicity Studios was to provide advice to government departments and state agencies on the provision of photographic, art, and display services and in particular to assist in the production of publicity material aimed at conveying a favourable image of New Zealand.
The Franz Josef is a 12 km long glacier located in Westland National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km to the south, it is unique in descending from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres above sea level, amidst the greenery and lushness of a temperate rainforest. After the small Helicopter ride, hikers will be dropped off to start the valley walk, ice climbing on the Franz Josef Glacier.
When you are in High Country (New Zealand) one of the famous activities that you can do are glacier hike and scenic helicopter view. There are two options for those interested in glacier hike, either Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier. This was my second time doing glacier hike in Franz Josef one in summer 2011 and one in winter 2012.

A few photos from my 1979 NZ trip plus an aerial shot of Dart Glacier and Cascade Saddle.
When I did the walk in 1979, we had already hiked the Milford and Routeburn Tracks and walked to the Dart River via Lake Sylvan.
I have some brief internet so I just wanted to post up my favourite shot from yesterday, of the awesome Franz Josef glacier on the South Island of New Zealand. New Zealand is blessed to have two of only three glaciers world-wide that are surrounded by rainforest. Highly unusual and incredibly fragile. This glacier is retreating at the moment at a rate of knots. Pretty shocking to see where the glacier used to be even twenty years ago. But an incredibly beautiful and inspiring place. And the blues you see in the photo are real. I haven't processed the photo at all. It's a single shot, straight out of the camera, even though it looks like an HDR!
