Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand

Franz Josef Glacier and Waiho River

New Zealand

Long before coming anywhere near the clouds, we swung around to the left, flew over over fearsome peaks, looked down a glacial valley and landed on the snow. Need I say it, but this shot is best viewed at full size.

The Franz Josef Glacier is located in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the South Island of New Zealand.

Franz Josef Glacier

Franz Josef Glacier is a 12 km (7.5 mi) long temperate maritime glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It descends from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. The river emerging from the glacier terminal of Franz Josef is known as the Waiho River.

Our helicopter flew above the glacier to reveal a stunning world of rugged crevasses; an awesome sight. The glacier is in the in Westland Tai Poutini National Park. This shot is best viewed at full size to appreciate the size of the crevasses.

The Franz Josef Glacier has shrunk so much as it used to fill the gray area in the middle of the photo between the mountain ranges, which are the Southern Alps. The beige area in the bottom center of the photo is the mostly dry riverbed of the Waiho River, which varies in flow based on snow melt and rainfall (according to Wikipedia). Despite these challenges, it is still a very beautiful area that I feel fortunate to have visited.

Well, not really left behind! Dropped off at the top of the mighty Franz Josef Glacier in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park, South Island, New Zealand for a three-hour glacier hike.

Another from our holiday back in January. The wonderful Franz Josef Glacier on NZ's West Coast.

And because it looks so small on the screen compared to my favourite squares, try it Bigger

The now receding Franz Josef Glacier has left in its wake slate-grey, finely ground stone in the foreground against the glassy water of the Waiho River in New Zealand earlier this year. Swirling patterns in the mud around here remind me of Damascus Steel.

To get a sense of the size of the glacier, view this shot at full size and then find the helicopter flying ahead of us, and its shadow on the snow. It's a little to the right of centre and about one third down from the top of the shot.

...or they could just be grey. Melting ice from the Franz Josef Glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, South Island, feeds the icy waters of the Waiho River.

Lured by the swirling, opalescent flows, and having decided not to pack waterproof boots, I made the mistake of wading into the glacial waters.

Excruciating.

Even five minutes later when my lower extremities had partially numbed, it was still as if red hot needles were being driven into my legs from all sides.

Filmed during the Peters Pool walk near Franz Josef Glacier on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. This image was scanned from my colour slide to a .Kodak pcd file and then converted to a .jpeg file.

Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km (12 mi) to the south, and a third glacier, it descends from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level.

NZ Series: On the hike to Franz Josef glacier

Heli-hikers on the ice at Franz Josef, dwarfed by the scale of the glacier and the mountain range.

The Franz Josef Glacier - seen from the trail.

A quick panorama before I set up for a time-lapse :)

Franz Josef Glacier.

Ok, so it's not quite midnight, more like 7:01 PM :)

I wish we had more time to spend at places like this, as this shot is the last frame of a time-lapse, would have been great to stay until it were pitch black!

Ran out of time to complete this shoot but still got something for the bag :) shot from Peter's Pool, to the West of Franz Josef Glacier. This was just after 7pm so wasn't quite dark, but dark enough. Composition was very tricky so had to get what I could, the tripod was sitting on a floating plant on the small lake, so couldn't really move for optimum view, ah well :)

14mm lens, 6 shots.

The Franz Josef Glacier from the riverbed. I'd seen lots of photos before going but being there was something else, just so incredible =)

On a bright sunny Thursday afternoon I took a helicopter flight over the Franz Josef Glacier on the South Island of New Zealand. Seated next to the pilot I had a perfect view as we flew up the valley, over the peaks and landed on the snow.

For the most part I shot videos, spectacular high definition footage on files too big to upload to this site. This was the view as we flew towards the glacier; a shot best viewed at full size.

All during our hike up to the terminal face of the Franz Josef Glacier, the sun was at our backs. Once we finally arrived at the ice, the cracks & crevasses provided some backlight opportunities. Here is one of them. I could have sat here for hours starring at all the shapes & shadows of this light show!

Another frame from a time-lapse :) the theme for this trip is pretty much reflections, everywhere we went the waters were still :)

Peters Pool, Franz Josef Glacier.

Nice little rainbow made a quick appearance on our hike back out.

This shot was taken on the trek up to the Franz Josef Glacier.

I couldn't find a name for it.

It was quite impressive, not big but very beautiful. It went from one at the top, to two and then three falls.

It was difficult to fit them all in, I tried a three shot pano but it just made it all look squished...
