Franz Josef Glacier is located in the Westland Poutini N.P. on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It descends from the Southern Alps to within more than 12 miles from the Tasman Sea. Since 2008, it has retreated at a rapid rate due to global warming.
It was a very dreary overcast day, but we still hiked up to the vantage point to be able to view Franz Josef Glacier.
Franz Josef Glacier / Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere is a 12 km (7.5 mi) long[1] temperate maritime glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Together with the Fox Glacier 20 km (12 mi) to the south, and a third glacier, it descends from the Southern Alps to less than 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level.[2]
The area surrounding the two glaciers is part of Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site park. The river emerging from the glacier terminal of Franz Josef is known as the Waiho River . Wikipedia

The glacial forms were so beautiful! I was surprised how much they reminded me of the sandstone slot canyons in the US Southwest. More pics in comments section below.

Post processing video tutorials and TKPanel for Photoshop in German and English
I just released my first English speaking video tutorial covering all aspects of sharpening (presharpening and output sharpening), creating mood, exposure blending and creative processing techniques, focus stacking and preparation for print.
There are also German video tutorials covering more than nine hours of instructional video material for post-processing available on my website!
The Shot:
This is one of my absolute favorite images from our recent NZ trip. Just before sunset I went out again on a short hike up the hill in the Franz Josef Glacier Valley waiting for the magic to appear.
There is really not much I can say about this but that I am considering this being framed somewhere in my house.
Cheers,
André

This is one of the glaciers of the west coast of the south island of New Zealand. Because the mountains are so steep, the glacier moves very fast and reaches almost sea level. You can walk al the way to the glacier and even climb it.

The mountain on the right in the clouds is Aoraki/Mount Cook while the glacier valley in the middle is the one of the Franz Josef Glacier. Together with it's neighbor the Fox Glacier these are the only two glaciers in the world that decent into subtropical rainforest.
I'm back!! Had a wonderful time and took heaps of photos which I'm still processing, many of which you'll see eventually :-)
This is the Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand's beautiful West Coast. It's one of two glaciers that go to almost sea level and are very accessible. The other is Fox Glacier. These glaciers have actually advanced in the past few years, when I was here when I was younger (lots younger!) the terminal face was much further back than where you see it now. More about the glacier Here
They are both a very impressive sight, unfortunately we didn't have time to make the trek up the riverbed to get to the terminal face -next time...
If you look hard (and you'll probably need a magnifying glass you can just make out tiny people near the end of the glacier, and there are also people with guides up on the ice itself.
Many thanks to Paul for his processing help!
A whole collection of waterfalls running into the valley carved by the now retreating Franz Josef Glacier.
Return of a guided tour on the Franz Josef Glacier - Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere in Māori - a 12 km long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
It’s a challenging walk, that offers superb views of the glacier, the surrounding mountains, and the Tasman Sea, by a clear day.
This is The early Maori knew Franz Joseph as Ka Roimata o Hine Hukatere (Tears of the Avalanche Girl). Legend tells of a girl losing her lover who fell from the local peaks, and her flood of tears freezing into the glacier.
It’s the world’s fastest moving glacier – moving at speeds of up to one meter per day. Franz Josef Glacier is located only 300 meters above sea level and is surrounded near its base by temperate rainforest.
The glacier was still advancing until 2008, but since then it has entered a very rapid phase of retreat. As is the case for most other New Zealand glaciers which are mainly found on the eastern side of the southern alps, the shrinking process is attributed to global warming.
Finely-layerd sedimentary rock near the mouth of the Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand. This surface was scraped off by the glacier, which is currently retreating rapidly, but it looks like the scraping took place a good while ago, followed by wind and water erosion. The image is perhaps 3 feet from bottom to top on this slope.
The Franz Josef Glacier is a natural wonder located on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island that is sure to leave you awe-inspired. The stunning blue ice and towering ice formations make for a breathtaking sight, and the glacier's constantly changing environment means that no two visits are ever the same. Visiting Franz Josef Glacier was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should not be missed by anyone who loves natural beauty.
One of the many small flows of water feeding the Waiho River at Franz Josef Glacier in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, South Island.
The slippery rocks, driving rain and swirling wind made for a challenging shoot - any longer exposures were complicated by water frustratingly spraying onto the lens. @#$%!
