Southern Alps on the West Coast of New Zealand (South Island).

The hiking paths to the glacier tongue were closed due to heavy rainfalls on the day and night before.

The story behind this idyllic and peaceful image was, at least quite stressful to me.

The wooden dock was literally infested with hundred of sandflies. For those who doesn’t know, sandflies in New Zealand are quite a biter.

So I had to plan a strategy in order to get this picture:

1- Spray my skin: Face, arms, neck, with some repelent for sandflies.

2- Get out of the car. Open and close the door very fast to prevent some of them getting inside the vehicle.

3- Go quickly to the point where to get to see the best views.

4- Take at least like 100 pictures. Very fast, multiples point of views and avoiding thinking too much.

5- Run back to the car. Very fast.

Time elapsed: less than 3 minutes. Achieved goal!

Now I hope you like the picture! No pressure.

We couldn't have asked for a better morning on our last day in New Zealand. We were lucky enough to have two sunny days out of three on the West Coast, so we got to fully enjoy the view of the mountains around the Waiho Valley and Franz Josef from in front of our "Glacier Cottage."

The Franz Josef glacier is about 12 km (~7.5 mi) long and leads to the Tasman Sea. There is a 45 minute hike to a viewing station and an 8 hr hike to get really close. Helicopter tours also can get you right on top of the glacier.

To put things in perspective....look at this photo in full screen mode and find the people in the bottom middle and right of the photo. The glacier has been retreating steadily since 2008 (global warming). I saw a 2008 photo where the glacier had once filled the entire foreground of my photo.

Finally realised a long held dream to visit this iconic location. Constant rain and low hanging cloud. In short terrible weather. Perfect for photography.

Franz Josef Glacier, Lake Matheson and Fox Glacier

Fine-grained bedrock, near terminus of Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand. This glacier undergoes rapid advances and retreats; it's currently retreating rapidly. It's not clear when it last covered this rock, but it did a fine job of smoothing it off whenever that was.

Fortunately, no Wampa.

I took this photo while in helicopter on the way back to base after finish our glacier hike in Franz Josef. This was my first and might be last aerial shot from helicopter and it does create memorable experience for me. For more info feel free to visit my page www.facebook.com/MunzerPhotography
