Concrete jersey barriers become canvases for colorful designs making in-between spaces come to life with the implementation of four artist-designed murals in on 150 barriers in one weekend during the spring of 2010.
"Moving Forward," "NYCamo," "Food in Transit," and "Anchovies along the FDR Drive" were painted by more than 300 New York Cares volunteers on barriers lining pedestrian paths and bike lanes in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.

A trip into Nottingham with no other purpose than to add to my stranger project proved to be fruitful. As I slowly ambled along the streets my eyes fell on a young lady walking towards me. Her black attire, and black red hair produced a striking look, so I stepped forward and introduced the project to her.
I photographed Katie exactly where we met, asking her to lean on a concrete post so I could use a building as the backdrop to her portrait. The day was overcast with a little brightness coming from my left which produced some gentle modelling to Katie’s face. It was also windy, and that caused a few problems with Katie’s hair blowing across her face, so it was just a matter of taking a few more images than I normally would to ensure I got some photographs with hardly any flyaway hairs crossing her face.
Katie is a student in her second year of studying politics. She told me she’d like to work in the charity sector once qualified.
When not studying, Katie likes to play video games and read fantasy novels.
What can’t Katie live without? “My dog, Indi,” she replied, then told me, “She’s a Red Lakeland Jack Russel cross.”
I asked Katie to describe herself in one word. Vibrant, was her answer.
What is Katie’s guilty pleasure? Katie smiled and then said, “eating chocolate when there is no one else around, especially Cadbury’s Chocolate Buttons.”

On July 18, Boeing employees and their families worked alongside the team from Food Forward to harvest fresh local produce. Food Forward rescues local produce, that would otherwise go to waste, for people in need throughout Southern California.

De presentatie bij Stroom bestaat uit een viertal onderdelen. Er wordt een Speed Crop Balcony geïnstalleerd op een balkon van "oud formaat" gevuld met kleine groenten. Een mens van 50 centimeter kan een grote moestuin houden op het oppervlak van een gemiddeld (huidig) balkon. Immers, de kleine mensen zullen een tijdlang leven in de "ruines" van de steden van de grote mensen. Op het balkon groeien zogenaamde "microgreens", kleine kiemgroenten die eenvoudig en snel te kweken zijn en door hun geconcentreerde dosis voedingsstoffen erg gezond zijn. Op een aantal posters in de ruimte is een speculatief onderzoek te zien naar geschikte akkergrond binnen de stadsgrenzen van Den Haag, en de mogelijkheden om vrijgekomen recreatiegroen aan te wenden voor zelfvoorzienende akkerbouw in de stad.
Achter de Speed Crop Balcony staat de Somatostatin Zebrafish Farm, een viskwekerij voor zebravisjes. Zebravissen worden veel gebruikt in genetisch onderzoek. Onlangs zijn de eerste zebravissen ontwikkeld met medicinale kenmerken. De zebravissen in de Somatostatin Zebrafish Farm zijn zo gemanipuleerd dat ze een grote hoeveelheid somatostatine bevatten. Somatostatine is een natuurlijk groeiremmend hormoon dat bovendien het ledigen van de maag vertraagt. Door met enige regelmaat een visje uit deze kwekerij te eten wordt zodoende de honger gestild en de neiging om te groeien onderdrukt.
In de andere ruimte staat de Sunflower Table, een tafel gebaseerd op een grote rijpe zonnebloem waar vijf kleine mensen omheen kunnen zitten terwijl zij de zaden uit de bloem trekken. Sunflower Table onderzoekt toekomstige mogelijkheden in de relatie tussen mensen en ingrediënten. Hoe verhoud je je tot een banaan of een granaatappel als je 50 centimeter groot bent? Kunnen we ons, met behulp van dit soort objecten als de Sunflower Table, verplaatsen in een toekomstscenario waarin dit werkelijkheid wordt?
In zekere zin geldt dat ook voor Poultry House, een onderzoek naar de relatie tussen mens en micro-livestock, kippen in dit geval. Wat voor soort gereedschap hebben we nodig om een kip te bereiden als we 50 centimeter groot zijn? Hoe vangen, slachten en koken we dan een kip? Om deze relatie beter te begrijpen werd er op 22 december 2011 een struisvogeldiner georganiseerd bij Stroom waarbij een struisvogel werd bereid alsof het een kip was. Dit proces werd gefilmd en de film is nu in de expositieruimte te zien in combinatie met een kippenhok en een aantal struisvogel eieren.
The presentation at Stroom consists of four parts. A Speed Crop Balcony will be installed on an "old format" city balcony now filled with baby vegetables. A person of 50 centimeters can keep a large vegetable garden on the surface of an average city balcony. After all, the smaller people will live for a long time in the "ruins" of our cities. On the balcony so-called micro greens are growing, tiny sprouts that grow easily and quickly, and contain a very healthy dose of concentrated nutrients. On several posters in the gallery space, a speculative study is outlined that looks for suitable farming grounds within the city limits of The Hague, and the possibilities of using vacant recreational green areas for subsistence farming in the city.
Behind the Speed Crop Balcony we find the Somatostatin Zebrafish Farm, a fish farm for zebra fish. Zebra fish are widely used in genetic research. Recently the first zebra fish has been developed with medicinal properties. The zebra fish in the Somatostatin Zebrafish Farm are manipulated in such a way that they contain large amounts of somatostatin. Somatostatin is a natural growth-reducing hormone that also delays digestion. By regularly eating a fish from this farm, one suppresses both hunger and the tendency to grow.
In the adjoining room we find the Sunflower Table, a table based on a large mature sunflower that can accommodate five small persons who can sit around the table while they pull the seeds from the flower. Sunflower Table explores future possibilities in the relationship between people and ingredients. How do you relate to a banana or a pomegranate when you are 50 centimeters tall? And can we, by means of objects such as the Sunflower Table, be transported into a future scenario in which this has become a reality?
In a sense this is also what the Poultry House aims at. This project investigates the relationship between man and micro-livestock, chickens in this case. What kind of tools do we need to prepare a chicken? How do we capture, slaughter, and cook a chicken when we are 50 centimeters tall? To better understand this relationship, we organized an Ostrich Dinner on December 22, 2011 at Stroom where an ostrich was prepared as if it was a chicken. This process was filmed and the film is now shown in the exhibition space alongside a chicken coop and ostrich eggs.

Last week some friends and I went on the Swanage Railway for a friend's birthday, can't beat a bit of steam train riding!
The Swanage Railway recently had it's first through passenger service since 1972 (from London) so hopefully it won't be long before services run again onto the mainline and beyond.
I've edited this in GIMP to keep the red streaks in the livery, the British Railway logo and a small amount of colour on the smokebox handrail (thanks to archidave!).

Conducting a collaborative research since 2012, Maria Andersson and Nancy Atakan study Turkey’s integration of Swedish physical culture practices as part of the modernization efforts in the early 20th century. Investigating the adaptation of gymnastics techniques and folkloric elements, the artists unfold narratives on Selim Sırrı Tarcan, the founder of physical education and the Olympics Committee in Turkey, as well as on the accomplishments of his daughters. Inspired by their life stories, the individual and collective works in Forward, March! explore the intertwined relationship between physical education and the emancipation of women in Turkey.
As with any Genest puzzle, the border is never straight-forward. Edge pieces are usually joined by one or more inner pieces, rather than each other. The outer pieces do tend to have a bit more knobby shapes in them, and are somewhat easy to pick out.
This was at the 8.5 hour mark. I pretty much had the border completed, and I'd made good headway on a number of long, linear shapes, but my workspace was a cluttered mess. Additionally, I had backed myself into a corner, working very close to the edges of my table, which proved inconvenient later on. But that's just part of the fun with these push-fit puzzles: their fragility adds to the tactile challenge. Placing a piece can often seem like a surgical procedure, and one false move can break apart a whole area.

18 REASONS WHY WE ALL LOVE COX

Club legend Greg Barras sat nervously in his house at Albury as word quickly spread that his club record of 18 goals was in jeopardy. Lee Cox under the beautiful Autumn sun treated the fans to a marking and goal scoring frenzy. Cox had a near perfect game, equalling the club record, and even found time to give off four more goals to team mates in better positions.
For the first time this season Hepburn was able to score the first goal of the match, usually slow starters, the Burras showed no signs of being lethargic and had eight goals on the board by quarter time. At the main break 20 goals had been amassed with Cox kicking half of them. Cox’s sidekick, Andy McKay unusually flew under the radar, (as was Cox’s dominance) but “ Hollywood” was still close to best on ground honours with his 7 goals , superb high marking and pin point passing to Cox on the lead.
Creswick had a day they would rather forget, but to their credit, they never gave up and had some young players who had very good games. As usually is with an uneven scoreline, most of the play was forward of the centre square, in saying that Hepburn’s backline had to concentrate harder, but when the opportunity arose, Trevor Johnson, Allan Ware and coompany mopped up and created opportunities for their team mates. Daniel Smith’s big frame also posed problems for the opposition. Smith played a very versatile game, using his body to great affect so his fleet footed allies in Baker, Rees, and the James boys could get their hands on the ball.
Brian O’ Halloran, the former star rover of the 1970’s is a proud man. His oldest son Tim is doing well in his first coaching gig at Reserves level. Next in line Dan becoming a seasoned performer, but the youngest of the clan, Liam, has settled in nicely into Shane Robertson’s structure, bobbing up linking play, and showing maturity well above his years.
Next week Hepburn takes on the big improver Gordon at the Laurie Sullivan Reserve which should be a match worth watching.

For two and a half quarters Hepburn matched Creswick, but were blown away in the end by one of the premiership favorites. The highlight reel was pretty small, but Joe Malone would have featured prominently having a blinder of a game in the middle. His strong work in tight and then classy skills to finish something his younger team mates can learn from.
Tom Conroy battled hard in the ruck, certainly holding his own and Lucas Bossinger put in his best game to date. The small brigade of under 15 players who fill in each week again performed well, with Jackson Carrick and Billy Johns being rewarded kicking goals. Next week is a big game as the boys should aim to have their second win for the season.
