Thor's Hammer is a unique example of a hoodoo, formed by erosion procesesses of relatively hard rock overlaying softer, more erodible rock, such as sandstone. The harder more resistant caprock protects the softer underlying layers from frost, wind, rain, freezing and thawing so that the rate of erosion is slower than elsewhere.

30 to 40 million years ago the sandstone was "born" in an ancient lake that covered much of Western Utah. Minerals deposited within different rock types cause hoodoos to have different colors throughout their height.

Zippy again should be thanked for chasing these two towards me. Mallards are some of my favourite birds, so beautiful and so friendly. Zippy just sees them as food............

A basalt cap overlays the Bidahochi formation above the Chinle formation. An estimated 305 meter layer appears to have been eroded away between the two formations.

Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southwestern Utah in the United States. The major feature of the park is Bryce Canyon is a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks.

A setting looking to the northwest while taking in views up this hillside to the High Peaks with pinnacles. This is in Pinnacles National Park. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of the towering heights to my fronts and create this wall with the pinnacle rocks. Blue and clouds would help to highlight that look and bring more of a focus to the hillside.

Blackchurch Rock lies on the North Coast of Devon and this impressive Stack is a Photographers playground, I visited back in March and will return in the coming weeks to see if I can get another shot or two.

Blackchurch is part of the Crackington Formation, an Upper Carboniferous formation of sandstone and dark mudstones and shale, an arch sea stack composed of layers of sandstone and shale tilted at about 60 degrees.

These large folds were formed during a mountain building event about 290 million years ago, called the Variscan Orogeny. The rocks were dated by cephalopod fossils called goniatites, an interesting place for sure :)

The Wigeon is a medium-sized duck with a round head and small bill. The head and neck of the male are chestnut, with a yellow forehead, pink breast and grey body. In flight, Wigeons show white bellies, male Wigeons also have a large white wing patch. Wigeons breed in central and northern Scotland and also in northern England. Many birds visit the UK over winter from Iceland, Scandinavia and Russia. With large numbers of wintering birds at a few UK sites, it is an Amber List species. (RSPB).

Easily panicked is the Wigeon. This is a large group of wigeon settling down again after who knows what set them off! They only moved about 20 feet! (Just over 6m). At one point they where walking on land in a vee formation, the bravest of them leading the way… then something would spook them and it was back to the water, quick as you like.

I suspect we'll be seeing a bit more of this in the coming weeks.

This picture may show the tightest formation that I have ever taken. The skill involved in putting on a show like this is totally impressive. I do believe that they were in the 18 inch separation that has been claimed at one time or another. The Air Force Thunderbirds would just go home without flying if they had to get this tight.

Huanghua formation is a garden modeled on a European maze. the phalanx of the Huang-Hua was a rectangle with gates on the four sides. At the center of the formation was an octagonal European Pavilion sitting on a high round foundation, meaning the sky was round and the earth was square. The phalanx was about 89 meters long from south to north and about 59 meters wide from east to west. The phalanx wall was over 1,600 meters long and about 1.2 meters high. As the wall was paneled with grey brick tiles carrying shaped carvings, the phalanx was also called the wan hua formation (formation of yellow flowers). Historic records indicate that on the evening of the moon festival each year in its heydays, the emperor would hold a lantern evening.

There are two records about the build time of the Huanghua formation in the 12th year of Qianlong (1747) and the 21st year of Qianlong (1756), but there is no definite evidence for either. (From: www.yuanmingyuanpark.cn/ymyyj/yj040/201612/t20161230_4171...)

The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, known to all the world as the “Thunderbirds”, are the Air Force’s Ambassadors in Blue. They represent the 500,000 men and women of the United States Air Force. The Thunderbirds plan and present precision aerial maneuvers to exhibit the capabilities of modern, high-performance aircraft and the high degree of professional skill required to operate those aircraft. The Thunderbirds squadron is composed of eight pilots (including six demonstration pilots), four support officers, four civilians and more than 100 enlisted personnel.

The Thunderbirds air demonstration is a mix of formation flying and solo routines. The four-jet diamond formation demonstrates the training and precision of Air Force pilots, while the two solo aircraft highlight some of the extreme capabilities of the F-16. In all, the pilots perform approximately 40 maneuvers in a single demonstration. An aerial demonstration lasts 60 minutes with an additional 15 minutes for the ground show before takeoff.

During a typical season the Thunderbirds perform no more than 70 air demonstrations in 35 cities throughout the nation. More than 280 million people in all 50 states and 57 foreign countries have seen the red, white and blue Thunderbirds jets.

Thunderbirds were officially activated June 1, 1953, as the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit at Luke AFB, Arizona. The unit was nicknamed the “Stardusters.” Their first aircraft was the straight-winged F-84G Thunderjet. The team transitioned to the swept-winged F-84F Thunderstreak in 1955. In June 1956, the team moved to its current home at Nellis AFB in Nevada and traded the veteran F-84 for the world’s first supersonic fighter, the F-100 Super Sabre. In early 1964, the team changed briefly to the F-105B Thunderchief, but after only six shows returned to the F-100. In 1969 the team transitioned to the F-4E Phantom and then in 1974 to the T-38 Talon, a more fuel efficient jet. In 1983 the Thunderbirds began flying the
