Taken along the Rainbow Vista Trail at the Valley of Fire State Park.

On Memorial day we had to wait in line for 2 hours, but it was worth every minute!

End of the day sunset light there on the amazing formations in the Badlands ... just impressive to see and splendid under these lighting conditions.

A flock of pigeons at sunset

Pigeons and doves constitute the family Columbidae within the order Columbiformes, which include some 300 species of near passerine birds. In general parlance the terms "dove" and "pigeon" are used somewhat interchangeably. In ornithological practice, there is a tendency for "dove" to be used for smaller species and "pigeon" for larger ones, but this is in no way consistently applied, and historically the common names for these birds involve a great deal of variation between the term "dove" and "pigeon." This family occurs worldwide, but the greatest variety is in the Indomalaya and Australasia ecozones. The doves and pigeons are called "squabs."

Doves and pigeons build relatively flimsy nests from sticks and other debris, which may be placed in trees, on ledges, or on the ground, depending on species. They lay one or two eggs, and both parents care for the babies, which leave the nest after 7 to 28 days. Doves feed on seeds, fruit and plants. Unlike most other birds, the doves and pigeons produce "crop milk," which is secreted by a sloughing of fluid-filled cells from the lining of the crop. Both male and female produce this highly nutritious substance to feed to the babies.

I was out for sunrise (which was blocked by a heavy layer of clouds) on Gothic Road outside of Crested Butte, Colorado. I really liked the formation in this Aspen stand with early morning fog lifting from the trees.

This was taken a couple of weeks ago ... the ice is all gone now and the long winter is becoming a distant memory. We had a hot week last week with 30C + but it has cooled down again ... it's getting close to zero at night so Rosa is covering her gardens and potted plants to protect against frost.

This unique rock formation at the Northern end of Anapai Bay reminded us of a fierce Maori warrior cast in stone to forever watch out for dangers from the sea.

The two sides look quite different - perhaps they take turns on watch.....

I photographed this rock formation during our hike on the Lilienstein. When you look closer it looks like a dragon. I don't know what the rock is really called or whether it even has a name.

I wasn't paying attention to the birds, well there is a first time for everything. My wife pointed out that as we were at the airshow a number of pelicans got into the spirt and were flying in formation as well.

The Grandstand is an amazing rock formation that rises about a hundred feet above the northwest end of the Racetrack Playa. Processed with the Georgia O'Keefe filter in Topaz Impressions.

Five Blue Angels punch into the sky like a patriotic exclamation mark the kind of formation that feels less like flight and more like a national signature. On Independence Day, this image hits different: precision, discipline, and raw American engineering carving upward into a cloudless July sky.

The jets rise in a perfect fan, vapor trails streaking behind them like fireworks drawn in daylight. The symmetry is surgical. The timing is flawless. It’s the aviation equivalent of a national anthem, loud, proud, and impossible to ignore.

And with you shooting this on July 4, the whole frame becomes a celebration: the blue of the sky, the blue of the jets, the gold accents flashing like sparks from a firework shell. It’s America’s birthday rendered in thrust and geometry.
