(17/366) A rainy windy day in Ireland, definitely a day for indoor photography. This is No. 4 in our collection of 5 hand-crafted model wall plaques (see my album below for the other photos). It measures about 18" x 20" and depicts a traditional blacksmith's forge with bellows, anvil & vice. Made probably 20 years ago by a friend of Martin's in Shropshire. Dusted especially for the photo!

This is a picture of a horseshoe that was just put in a forge to heat up to modify. This type of shoe would have been used on a cart horse in the city a hundred years ago where there would have been cobble stone roads. Good for wear and traction.

Forge Level is hardly level on the formation of the former L&NWR line along which Port Talbot Railway 0-6-0 saddle tank No.816 (aka No.813) is working a demonstration mixed goods on the heritage Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway on 12th January 2008. The over-bridge originally allowed access below for rail traffic working between the various sections of the vast Blaenavon Iron & Steel Works and its complex railway system. To the right of the image was located the main works complex, supplied directly from Big Pit colliery.

Caught right after the rain, this holly plant looks like an intricate metal sculpture. The black and white contrast beautifully brings out the raw texture of the leaves, making the water droplets glisten like tiny diamonds. It is a perfect shot for fans of moody, botanical minimalism.

This building dates from circa early 16th century and as its name suggests was originally the village forge. It is now a private house.
The craft of the blacksmith dates back several thousand years and there was a time when virtually every village in the country would have a forge. The blacksmiths skills were highly valued as he was able to make and repair most metal objects in day to day use.
Forged out the detailing on the rings today, working on the bars tomorrow, the moving on to the uprights or 'pillars'.

During the winter of 1777-78 the Continental Army, under the overall generalship of George Washington, camped at Valley Forge one day's march north and west of Philadelphia where the British Army was quartered for the winter. Some 20,000 strong, they were the 4th largest town on the North American Continent at the time.
Known as the Knox Covered Bridge, the original was built in 1851 at a cost of $843, but it washed away in an 1865 flood. It was replaced and then upgraded in the mid-20th Century with steel girders to take modern traffic across Valley Creek.

Shot at the first light festival at Sainte-Marie among the Huron. This shot really push my equipment to its limit. It was VERY dark in there... I stabilized the camera on a bench and shot a few at different exposures. Obviously, I have no control over what the the "forgeron" was doing so I use the cleanest shot of him and composite the rest of the background from the less noisy shot. The final image received some tonal adjustments and the usual de-noising and sharpening with the Topaz AI plug-in.
