The main forge building at Wortley Top showing Hammer No 1 and the Crane. To the right of the image you can see a couple of railway wheels and axles. Just to the right, outside the building, is a large waterwheel - the main source of power.

Although iron was forged on the site since the early seventeenth century, the forge building is mainly 18thC - extensive alterations were made in 1713.

The ironworks are probably the oldest of its type in Yorkshire - and well worth a visit.

FGC Preview.

In May, Valley Forge instituted a FREE shuttle service. A real nice move (literally) on their part. Guests can leave their cars parked in the parking lot (car park for my friends in the U.K.), get on the air conditioned bus and travel from location to location in the park. You save on fuel and it's better for the environment because it is partly run on bio-diesel. It's a great way to take in history. There are 3 of them and they make stops every 15-20 min.

Anyway... The Park chose 2 of my images to wrap around the shuttle. I'm just now posting this because I just got around to shooting it. I have to admit, it IS kind of cool seeing your images that large and on a bus.

It is always beautiful at Valley Forge NHP, but this time of the year, I love most. Hiking is so much more than hiking. At mount Joy.

Valley Forge National Park

(17/366) A rainy windy day in Ireland, definitely a day for indoor photography. This is No. 4 in our collection of 5 hand-crafted model wall plaques (see my album below for the other photos). It measures about 18" x 20" and depicts a traditional blacksmith's forge with bellows, anvil & vice. Made probably 20 years ago by a friend of Martin's in Shropshire. Dusted especially for the photo!
