I don't know what this piece of equipment is, though my guess it's some sort of oven or forge. (There are likely people who will see this picture who will know more than I can gather from my modern background where jobs mostly involve keyboards, and I welcome any enlightenment.) There are three of these in the factory. If this is a forge, I have no way of knowing what they would have been forging. It's hard for me to imagine what a work day in this space would have looked like. It's a tiny space. There wasn't room for too many to work.
The Forge at Fontenay was the first to use a waterwheel driven hammer, a true innovation of its time.
