Gla Forest is a nature reserve, which covers 28000 hectares, and an area with beautiful natural environments and approximately 80 lakes. It´s not virgin forests, modern forestry is also practiced. Gla Forest has hiking routes of various lengths spanning tens of kilometers. The routes are dotted with windbreaks and overnight cabins. A serene walk through the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove in Kyoto, Japan.
The towering bamboo stalks create an otherworldly atmosphere, where the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves feels almost like a whisper.
This path has become one of Kyoto’s most iconic sights, blending natural beauty with a deep sense of calm.

What else could you call this weathered bunion, but Inspiration Point. The panoramic field of view, the strip of mauve just above the horizon. The patches of water below reflecting the sinking sun. Big Muddy River meandering in the flood plain seeking its connection to the Mississippi River. This is the earth that was given to us to appreciate and enjoy.

A boardwalk runs beside this delightful little stream right near the accommodation. The walk is only supposed to take 20 mins but our record so far is 2-1/2 hours!
There is always so much to see among the beautiful greens while indulging in a little Shrinrin Yoku - literally "Forest Bathing".

Inside the famous bamboo grove at Arashiyama on the western outskirts of Kyoto, Japan.
There were hordes of folk doing a very good impression of a milling throng so finding a shot without a selfie stick in it was a challenge.
That said, despite the number of people it was surprisingly tranquil in the grove and all were on best behaviour.

The swimming pool of the Misato Elementary School Mitsukoshi Branch. Now abandoned.
As the countryside depopulates and Japan's population decreases, little hamlets loose their schools. A common theme in many countries.
The Kumano Kodo trail walks right past the old school's main entrance and the pathway there has been paved in flagstones - clearly the Kumano Kodo was important to past students. The small Shinto shrine of Mizunomi-oji is right beside the ruins as well.
We'd been walking in overcast and thick shade when the light opened up and revealed this little backlit scene of the abandoned swimming pool.
I also shot this with the Leica but this landscape version from the Ricoh won the argument (this time). The colour version is pretty stunning as well but saving that up for a while.

Forest bathing involves slowly walking through a forest, taking in the atmosphere through all your senses, and enjoying the benefits that come. 100:366
Amid the recent COVID-19 virus pandemic and social distancing measures, it’s comforting that we can escape the insanity and safely isolate ourselves in nature without worry. This woodland scene is from one of my favourite woodland escapes...beautiful Francis/King Regional Park, Saanich, Vancouver Island, BC.
Francis King Regional Park is a 107-hectare park, nestled in rural Saanich. The woodland park is home to massive old growth forest including magnificent 500-year-old Douglas-fir trees. There is a vast network of woodland walking and hiking trails as well as a boardwalk loop trail for those with mobility issues, an ideal place for visitors of all abilities to explore nature.
The park gets its name from the surnames of James Francis whose father purchased the property in the 1840s and his good friend Thomas (the Skipper) King. James Francis was a lover of nature, refusing to donate his land to the city of Victoria as well as declining monetary offers from others to log the land. Thank goodness we have these beautiful gems in nature to enjoy especially during these times.
A cranky specimen of the quite rare Eucalyptus risdonii (Risdon Peppermint) seen here beside the Birthday Loop MTB track in the Meehan Range on Hobart's outskirts.
The Range hosts a mountain bike park that is very popular with the locals. The Birthday Loop is one of the easier trails on top of Simmons Hill but it runs through a very special little bit of forest. It is very peaceful there.
The ground is desperately poor, nothing but sandstone and the odd lump of dolerite or clay but the open woodland is very special. The track itself is just to the right of the tree - one can see how barren the ground is.
E. risdonii will likely become an increasingly dominant eucalypt species as the earth continues to heat up. It is tough as nails.

Loggers see dollar signs in these trees but when standing in the shadow of giants, one cannot help but get a sense of irony with each of us - a small presence time wise, but an overwhelming impact on the environment. Old forest trees have wood that's stronger and denser than 2nd generation growth as well as more trees per hectare - making them a prime target for the chain saw. "However, old-growth trees are more valuable standing when factoring in the economic and intrinsic benefits for tourism, scenery, recreation, wildlife, clean water, wild salmon, endangered species, carbon storage, and First Nations cultures." ancientforestalliance.org/ancient-forests/common-question...
The patchy light made exposure here a bit tricky and I didn't like the two boards next to the tree, but overall, I think it does convey the sense of awe one feels in this place.
