The copper leaves on the trees were casting lovely shadows on the pathway and the scene was inviting one to sit and soak up the atmosphere overlooking the lake.

Shinrin-yoku (森林浴) aka Forest Bathing in english and Waldbaden in German. Something I celebrate on every misty or rainy morning - if my job allows it.

There's a short walk beside the creek through lush rainforest to the waterfall of the same name.

I liked the little pool of light. The mono version was also good but stuck with colour for the greens :-)

I started following Simon Booth on YouTube and am starting to develop a greater appreciation of forest landscapes.

I also came across a series of shots I took in 2013 and decided to post them! ☺

It's autumn. The sun lights up the branches with golden leaves.

Forest bathing in an autumn forest is a wonderful experience!

It's easy to get caught up in all the political drama of the day or the doom and gloom surrounding the pandemic. All the more reason to tune it out for a while and go for a walk. Is that what forest bathing is all about? Of course we have to stop every two minutes for a picture - most of which are deleted - but that's besides the point. Have a great weekend!

The Birthday Loop in the Meehan Range on Hobart's outskirts.

The Range hosts a mountain bike park that is very popular with the locals. The Birthday Loop is one of the easier trails but it runs through a very special little bit of forest. It is very peaceful there.

The ground is desperately poor, nothing but sandstone and the odd lump of dolerite or clay but the open woodland is very special.

The quite rare Eucalyptus risdonii (Risdon Peppermint) seen here are endemic to the Meehans. E. risdonii will likely become an increasingly dominant eucalypt species as the earth continues to heat up. It is tough as nails.

We were taking one of the trails in the Redwood forest.

Russell Falls in Mount Field National Park, Tasmania.

This very pretty waterfall is situated almost at the entrance to Mount Field National Park.

Access is by a flat, 10 min wheelchair accessible path from the visitor centre.

Best viewed after heavy rain, the water fall is around 40m in height with two successive wedding-cake cascades. The base of the falls are surrounded by a delightful, ferny glade containing an excellent viewing platform. The catchment for the creek is quite modest and despite there being heavy rain two days before, the flow wasn't as heavy as I'd hoped. Even so, the thin veil makes for an attractive counterpoint to the cliffs and greenery.

This is not the best pic I took on the day - the best is on the phone but has terrible resolution. I'll be heading back one day soon to shoot it properly for a brooding mono I have in mind.

I also aim to do a Milky Way core pic from there in a few months!

The near impenetrable foliage beside the Pieman River, Western Tasmania.

Shot from the bow of a boat nudging the bank and at a focal length of only 21mm - this frame gives some idea of how steep is the shore and how thick is the rainforest is right down to the water.

Remarkably, this area has been selectively logged for Huon Pine and in a number of places, mined for gold. With rainfall measured in meters, the bush in the main recovers quite quickly however the pines will take a couple of thousand years to be replaced.

I tried it in colour but the shift to B&W really made the depth in the ferns pop so here it is.

From the forest floor, a backlit tree-fern frond (Dicksonia antarctica).

This is an older, previously logged, regenerating forest not a plantation and the dominant species is Eucalytpus regnans or Mountain Ash (among many names). The species grows very quickly and can reach 65m in around fifty years. The trees around the fern here are about that age and it is the butt of one such tree that provides the dark, tapering backdrop.

Growing so large and so quickly means E. regnans is a fabulous carbon sink with mature trees also providing habitat for countless species of birds, mammals and invertebrates.

Forest bathing requires a bit of a different approach at this time of year - usually, with a lot more layers of clothing, snowshoes, and a good set of winter boots. Even so, it's nice just to stand still, look around, and take it all in.

A recent snowfall the night before and brisk temperatures, made for a fine winter's day to get out the snowshoes. The only sounds were wind in the tree tops and the cracking of long spindly trunks as they swayed back and forth in the cold air. With a particularly loud crack nearby, one was "encouraged" to look up and make sure nothing was coming down on top of you. I wondered if it was due to frozen sap. Looking online, it is possible, can apparently be as loud as a gunshot, and some can even shatter.

Post a waterfall...

Russell Falls in the Mount Field National Park, Tasmania.

Have posted quite a few frames of this very special waterfall over the years.

This frame on Kodak Ektar 100 with my elderly Bronica S2A and Nikkor-D 40mm f/4 lens. It's a lovely old beast which frightens the living daylights out of folk when it fires :-D Not sure of the settings but probably ~15 secs at f/16 or something with a Nisi 6 Stop ND.

The spring color was so beautiful just after rain.

Horseshoe Waterfall in Mount Field National Park, Tasmania.

This waterfall is upstream from the Russell Falls waterfall I posted a couple of weeks ago. Access is still relatively easy considering a 15 min uphill walk finishing with a nice viewing platform provided for visitors. A few too many folk around to jump the fence and shoot a little bit closer/more elevated. I may just take a step ladder in next time :-)
