Constructed in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and still in use. Shelters are used to provide overnight protection from the elements. The CCC built several of these shelters in this park and at many other parks across the United States during the 1930s and 40s. The shelters provide a place of solitude for hikers that travel through the area. Isolated from the rest of the park with access only by this gravel road that threads through the park. The bare winter trees makes for a lonely setting with the tall trees, a great place to connect with the forest.

Roots reach out like fingers from the base of the trunk, grabbing the soil between the valleys. They merge at the bottom of the hill. These roots are different, exposed from the loss of soil washed away after the rains sent little rivers flowing down the hill, carrying the dirt with it.

Trees growing along a bank tend to fall into the water a lot. As the log rest in the water, moss takes advantage of the situation and starts to cover its surface. One lone limb stick out, waving its arms to the passerbyers. Hey look at me I have a new green coat on my old bones. So I obliged the fallen log and took this picture.

A rather large boulder left in the stream bed. Probably rolled down from the weathered sides of the stream. This is called a ravine, which is a narrow steep sided valley commonly eroded by running water. These steep banks provide opportunity for eroded rocks to roll down to the bottom and create an interesting site for the eyes to feast. We know it hasn’t rolled for awhile because it has moss growing on its surface, almost glowing.

The water in the river rushing out of the swamp. Rocks like innocent bystanders watch silently. from the bank. A blue sky with wispy clouds. Tall trees scrape the top. The journey begins here On the way to Heron Pond to see the lily pads, the cypress trees with its heaps of knees, and the floating green duck weed.

It easy to take the gently flowing, rock bed, clear water, streams for granted. They look so natural, an expectation. A stream like this may already exist in your mind, a part of your DNA, before you see it in person. I’m bringing it to you, for you to become reacquainted with it.

" ... Studies ... have demonstrated that exposure to nature positively creates calming neuro-psychological effects through changes in the nervous system. In addition, the level of the hormone serum adiponectin is also increased. When this hormone is present in low concentrations it is linked with obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome, among other bodily disorders. Every study conducted so far has demonstrated reductions in stress, anger, anxiety, depression and sleeplessness amongst the subjects who have participated. In Japan there are now 44 accredited Shinrin Yoku forests." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forest_bathing

This flat rock looks like it would provide a perfect place to put a chair, sit and enjoy the forest for a few. Freshly fallen leaves provides a perfect layer of newness to the forest floor. The green moss pokes through the leaves in spots breaking up the otherwise continuous flow of leaves on the floor. Exposed rocks stands tall in the background, glowing in places with its orange colored minerals embedded in the layers.

A peaceful scene along the Shut-ins Trail at Sam A. Baker State Park. A couple of large green are resting with their feet up and their long necks stretched out along the bank. A few smaller trees are wading in the calm crystal clear cool water. Long shadows span out across the calm pool of water.

It's filled with anemone and lots of wild garlic.

The smell of garlic is quite something.

More forest bathing, the Deer Trail at Campbell Valley Park in Langley.

Driving through the back roads of Vancouver Island's west coast, one cannot help but wonder at the overwhelming variety of frondescence in the rain forest. Standing at the side of the road to try and capture it in camera, I find myself drawn ever deeper to see and listen for what lies beyond my senses.

The narrator in Edgar Allen Poe's poem "The Raven," had hoped that by reading books, he would be able to distract himself from his feelings of grief, that he would find "surcease of sorrow."

The world is a sorrowful place these days, and for so many different reasons. So I decided to take a long walk in some nearby woods yesterday, to "forest bathe," as the Japanese describe it. I sought to find "surcease of sorrow" from the world I was both experiencing and reading about, and this photograph (and some others I will share) was composed during this walk

I have found that there is nothing quite like the woods to bring me back to a peaceful center. It's not just about the fresh air; it's about a stillness that allows one's soul to catch up with one's body

This is from last weekend!

We have been getting a lot of rain ever since, so posted this to remember what the bright sunshine looks like!

Forest bathing: Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the forest.

In Japan, forest bathing has been a recognized healing method to prevent diseases since 1984. Walks in the forest lower blood pressure and heart rate and significantly reduce stress. The interplay of air, light, temperature, microclimate and humidity and the typical forest smell from essential oils of moss, ferns and wood has a health-promoting effect on the human organism. Leaves and needles also filter fine dust from the air. Together with the sensual enjoyment of natural sounds, colors and scents, the forest unfolds its healing effect.

More forestbathing.

This photo was shot in the forest on the Oregon coast. Actually I was hunting some mushrooms there, and came across this tree. I was so attracted to the tree and started shooting photos.

This morning was an enchanting game between the sun and the rather dense ground fog. A little foretaste of the coming autumn? Can´t wait to see and feel more.
