The “Stena Forerunner” (2003/195 metres/24,688 grt) during a short spell on the freight run from Liverpool (Birkenhead). Replaced by the “Stena Forecaster” and now operating between Killingholme and Rotterdam. 28 September 2018.
Code-name Gimik (nick name “Gizmo”) this vessel was developed during WWII by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
The OSS was formed in June of 1942 by the United States to collect and analyze strategic information required to conduct special operations not assigned to other U.S. agencies.
Only two of these rare Gimik class semi-submersibles were ever built. Their purpose was to be part of a top-secret mission code-named NAPKO. The main objective of Operation NAPKO was to recruit and train 55 Korean Americans and Korean prisoners freed from Japanese prison labor camps for infiltration into Japanese occupied Korea and finally Japan itself. The OSS operatives were to collect intelligence and conduct sabotage in advance of Operation Olympic, the planned U.S. invasion of the Japanese home islands in late 1945.
The small Gimik was designed for transport across the ocean by a much larger mother ship. Gimik, with one OSS agent and two Korean operatives secured inside, would cruise toward Japan with most of the vessel submerged underwater and only the topside deck slightly visible above the sea. Even though the Gimik was stealthy, the mission of landing OSS agents on Japan’s homeland was extremely dangerous for obvious reasons.
Training for the mission was carried out at the Catalina Island OSS training facility located off the coast of southern California during the summer of 1945. Preparations to execute Operation NAPKO continued until the scheduled departure date of August 26, 1945, but with the end of the war on August 15, 1945, the Operation was cancelled.
On October 1, 1945, the Gimik project was transferred to the U.S. Navy. When the CIA was formed in 1947, the Navy transferred the Gimik to them. The PT Boat Museum’s founder, James M. “Boats” Newberry, acquired the Gimik vessel for PT Boats Inc. in the early 1970’s. The vessel was originally believed to be a Japanese suicide demolition boat. Only after extensive research and the declassification of CIA documents on October 27, 2011 could the true historical origin of the vessel be verified as the OSS Gimik Semi-Submersible.
Gimik is on display at Battleship Cove, and is owned by PT Boats, Inc., headquartered in Germantown, Tennessee.

The remains of Pinery Station. As a forerunner to the Pony Express and the Transcontinental Railroad, the Butterfield Overland Mail was the first successful attempt to link east and west with a reliable transportation and communication system. The six-year federal mail contract awarded to John Butterfield, a wealthy and popular businessman, stipulated that the arduous 2,700-mile wilderness journey had to be completed in 25 days. While Butterfield met this condition, his contract was cut short by the onset of the Civil War. Pinery Station, named for the surrounding stands of pine, is the only ruin of an original company-built Butterfield station standing close to a national highway of today. At 5,700 feet in elevation, this was also the highest station. Butterfield stations averages 20 miles apart. From September 1858 to August 1859, coaches regularly stopped here for water, food, rest, fresh teams, and protection. The Celerity coaches, pulled by six horses or mules, traveled day and night, averaging 120 miles a day, carrying up to nine passengers, essential baggage, and 12,000 letters. One hundred of these coaches were built in 1857 at a cost of $1,500 each ($51,600 in 2023) and were placed in the Butterfield Overland Mail service in 1858. 400 Pine Canyon Dr, Salt Flat, Texas 24 August 2022

The forerunner to the Routemaster was the RT, seen here on the left. RTW (the W meaning 'wide') is RTW185 (KLB915) is seen alongside RM1000 (100XBL) the 1000th Routemaster to be made. They're both seen at the London Bus Museum, Cobham.
History
On March 31, 1913, Faisanterie Buitenlust, the forerunner of the current modern animal park Burgers' Zoo, opens its doors to the public for the first time. Since its foundation by Johan Burgers, the first owner and the one who named the animal park in Arnhem, the park has always remained a real family business.
Already from its inception the zoo caused a sensation due to its daring new organisation, which naturally is in the way the animals' accommodations are shaped as well as in the way the experiences for the visitors are created. Burgers' Zoo has a rich history, which has shaped the zoo into the way it is today, and as you can still find it now in the wooded area just north of Arnhem.

The largest indoor mangrove in the world
With a surface area of 3,000 square meters, visitors venture into the largest indoor mangrove in the world. From the beach bordering a Belizean town square, the mysterious world that is the mangrove calls. Further inland, the mangrove forest slowly transforms into a tropical dry forest, where hundreds of butterflies in all shapes, sizes, and colours are dancing in the air.

The forerunner of Seung Dong Presbyterian Church, Gondanggol Church, was established in what is now Taepyeong-no by American missionary Samuel F. Moore in 1893, some nine years after Korea’s first Presbyterian missionary, Horace N. Allen, arrived in Korea.
Moore was a rather interesting character — he was very passionate about his work, he learned Korean in about six months by living away from the usual foreigner haunts of the day, and he put a lot of his effort into spreading the word among Korea’s social underdogs, including women and baekjeong, the “untouchable” class of Joseon society.
As for the building, the church attained its present form — for the most part — by 1912. It’s an imposing, red brick Romanesque structure, although the white entrance area was added on in 1959.

Merezhovsky proposes Leonardo ad a progressive character whose rationalism and humanism is opposed by sectarian conservatism. In this scene- which Fortescue- Brickdale has invented Leonardo is shown introducing his latest idea, the flying machine, to Lodovico while other members of his court look on. The famous priest, Savanarola, at far left, stands for the Church's hostility to progress. Lodovico's wife, Beatrice d'Este, and he rival for his affections, Cecilia Galliena, are shown awaiting the outcome of Leonardo's latest challenge to the Duke's tolerance. Brickdale's rendition of these two ladies echoes the famous portraits that Leonardo and his assistant, Ambrogio de Predis, made of them in their lifetimes, further imbuing the work with its hero's spirit.
